Retool Templates - Custom internal tools, in a click

Retool templates are pre-built tools which you can clone in one click. Connect your tools to read and write from your own datasources, like Stripe, Github, or your own custom databases and APIs.
Retool itself is a drag and drop way of building internal tools.

I've been following the low/no code space for a while (I wrote a piece on this trend earlier this year). Retool is one of the leaders in this category. Their new template approach is brilliant, similar to what Airtable did with Universe and Notion did with their Template Gallery.

Retool is great, but it's oftentimes hard to imagine use cases for it. With these templates, I now understand much better what other people do with Retool. Thanks!

Pros:

Gives me a good idea of what other people build in Retool

Cons:

None

I just signed up yesterday, and I see Retool as a no-code platform for coders who don't want to spend time creating CRUD and query code for dashboard and UI tools that have an interface. This product is truly amazing. After 10-30 minutes of getting used to, the power is incredible

@kevinyun thanks for stopping by! You captured one of the value offerings of Retool perfectly. What kind of apps are you building?

@abtapper analytics like BI tools for getting stats on internal data and customer support tools for searching across services like Firebase. Wrangling Firebase real-time DB data is a huge pain and limiting so excited to use Retool that it let's us use SQL without setting up server code on our end.

Hi PH! I’m David, founder @ Retool. Retool itself is a drag and drop way for semi-technical people to build internal tools. We connect to a variety of data sources, like Intercom, Stripe, Salesforce, etc. When people sign up, they often ask: “Retool looks cool, but not really sure what we’d build with it”. Because we’re a fairly horizontal product, answering this question has always been somewhat challenging to us. On the one hand, we want Retool to be used for _everything_ (since it really can be used for most internal UIs). But on the other hand, a horizontal product is often for people to understand and get started with. We’re really excited to be launching Retool templates, which are examples of applications real companies (like Peloton, Brex, and IndieHackers) have built on top of Retool. We’re hoping this helps answer the question of “what could Retool do?” Some of my favorite templates: * Github PR Dashboard: inspired by an internal tool @ Stripe! This template shows you all your outstanding PRs, whether inbound (waiting on you) or outbound (waiting on others, or unassigned). * GDPR Data Export: used by a paying, F5 customer. This template shows you a list of users from your database, and lets you connect various SaaS services, export data from all of them, zip it together, and email it out in an attachment. If any of you guys have anything questions, I’d love to answer! Thanks for having us :)

Excited to try and experiment with Retool. Templates helps and definitely give an idea what can be build. It would be cool if you can categorize these templates into nocode, low code etc. Congrats on the launch 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

@5harath That's a great idea! We built the templates partly as a learning opportunity for users who wanted to see what a fully-built app looks like. Most of them require very little code, but in most cases you will need some knowledge of how a database or API works and sometimes basic SQL or Javascript. We'll be adding to the templates in the coming weeks/months so I'll see if we can add some structured info about what skills are used in each template app.

Woah! Did you just reinvent CMS? Very Cool!
Alex Tapper
@destsound You can definitely use Retool as a CMS (here's one example: https://tryretool.com/templates/...) but can be so much more 💪🏼 Are you building something right now??

@abtapper As a matter of fact I am :) I generally use Drupal to build my MVPs since i know how to use it. My current idea might be outside of the current scope of your product. In short, we're building a platform for community members to communicate with nonprofits, building more productive conversation and creating support for local nonprofits. We spent the last few months researching and believe we have landed on the right product/pain point. Now we just have to build it lol! I'm having a heck of a time doing the planning for it though... I'd love your input!! (or anyone else's)
Alex Tapper
@destsound Hmm, yeah it sounds like you are building a public-facing site? Retool is mostly setup for internal apps. Not something really meant for user-facing apps, but rather to build tools for you and your team to manage data/content/users for the platform. Hope that helps!

Really a big fan of retool as a way to get great tools up and running fast. Keep up the good work!

@will_tennien_murphy Thanks for the note! We're big fans of Py as well!

Love it so far! I discovered Retool while looking for a way to automate my Stripe API payments with my new business.

Pros:

I love how easy it is to set up an internal tool!

Cons:

Don't really have any

it's look like awesome, I'm going to use it.

Being part of a Data Company I can totally see the future would be this, the idea of building your own dashboard out of the data that you already have with such an ease. I would admit that this is totally a very well thought product.
