Suuuper interesting. The first startup I worked at was InstantAction, building tech to enable any game to be playable in the browser. While a very different solution than this, we were approaching a similar opportunity back in 2009. This also reminds me of Gaikai and Onlive, both acquired by Sony (edited my previous typo).
Andrew Sampson
@rrhoover The web as a platform has really evolved over the last 10 years. Hopefully we're able to keep pushing browsers to their limits and make a positive impact on their development. Would love to hear more about your time at InstantAction.
Eric Diepeveen
@rrhoover didn't Sony buy Gaikai and turned it into playstation now? Together with David Perry.
Ryan Hoover
@ericdiepeveen you're right! I mixed this up. Edited!

why is the site so obtuse about exactly what the service is? Took me registering and opening the web client to realize that I had to have a PC to download the server on?
Andrew Sampson
@jordankrueger Hi Jordan, any suggestions for how we could improve it?
Jordan Krueger
@andrewmd5 As someone who can't use the service (I only have a Mac) I still don't quite understand what it is you're selling here. You say "stream all your games" in one area, so all I can figure out is that this is a way to play the games I currently own on a mobile device. You're just making some perplexing choices, like showing this big list of games in a Rainway window โ€“ it made me think this was a Steam-like service where I could play any game that you license on my mobile device. Moreover, it seems like the way you're using the term "streaming games" that you feel like that's a signaler to readers of how this works, but I had no idea what that meant. "Streaming games have never been this easy!" is the second sentence on the page and I have no idea what that means, while the next sentence is "Rainway makes streaming games so easy you'll be playing in just a few clicks." which means almost exactly the same thing as the sentence before it without explaining any more clearly what the service is. Howabout something like "Download Rainway to your PC to play games installed on your computer on any mobile device" or something like that? Also, adding "(PC)" to the "Download server" button seems like it'd make most sense since you're pushing a file directly to me without any idea that I need a PC to use it until it's already on my computer.
Andrew Sampson
@jordankrueger This service is for PC gamers with and existing collection of games looking to stream them to other devices. Thanks for the feedback however, I will try and apply it appropriately.

Cool to see more products in this space. Have you experimented streaming from Windows machines on AWS EC2 service?
Andrew Sampson
@tiivik We played around with EC2 a bit, we will be posting some official guides on our blog on how you can get it up and running on cloud servers.

great but.. " Connection log Connecting over WebRTC first. Failed to connect with WebRTC {"Error":"TargetDoesNotExist"} Attempting to connect by socket. Failed to connect with socket. Could not locate DNS entries, please run the server first time setup. "
Andrew Sampson
@edwardvasquezdr You need to install the agent/server on a Windows 10 PC before you can use the web client.

Thanks for your product! Now I can play games on my MacBook from my home PC everywhere http://take.ms/r8K1Q A lot of bugs but I believe that you will fix them soon ๐Ÿ˜‰
Andrew Sampson
@gogola If you find any major issues please message me on Twitter and I will take a look!
Rufat Mammadli
I've tried to sign in and list the games on iPhone (Safari & Chrome) but it keeps loading and no any result. Is mobile not supporting? Also, there is a responsiveness issue on the page.
Andrew Sampson
@rufatmammadli We should have a patch out this coming week to address some mobile browser issues.
Adrian Carolli
Does the web client work for Mac? It says "Unable to connect to Rainway by websocket: It looks like you've never run Rainway before. Please download it from https://rainway.io on a Windows 10 PC before using this client.." Do I just need to do this once?
Andrew Sampson
@adrian_carolli The web client works great on mac! As the message states, you should download the server onto a Windows 10 PC. The client is then used to access that PC to play your games.
Adrian Carolli
@andrewmd5 Hmmm is this like remote desktop? Can my brother be playing overwatch (for example) on the same desktop that I host the rainway server while I also play using the web client? Or can there only be one player at a time?
Andrew Sampson
@adrian_carolli We're currently building a streamlined coop experience into our platform. Right now however if you wanted to say play Cuphead with your brother, he could be sitting at the PC playing with one controller while you remote in via the client. You would just be the one that has to start the game.

First of all, this looks very cool! ๐Ÿ™Œ But... PC? I feel like it wouldโ€™ve made much more sense to play console games. Donโ€™t get me wrong, though, I love any type of game, no matter the platform. In my opinion, console games would be more fitting because they are designed to be played via controller - something you can hook up with your phone (I guess, I havenโ€™t actually done it). On the other hand, some PC games can be played via controller, yes, but then there are games like Starcraft, World of Warcraft and whatnot where you *need* to play with keyboard and mouse, which are a bit harder to plug in a phone, I think. Iโ€™m not saying it sounds reasonable to play Starcraft on a phone, just using it as an example for how some PC games need keyboards.

Anyone here remembers OnLive? They tried to do this and I actually played a few games with them but they failed and closed up shop. Though the internet speeds are much faster now and that was the primary reason for their failure. I hope you guys make it! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

I thought this would be similar to liquidsky, but it really takes them out of the equation as middlemen. The big plus is that you don't have to wait for them to make it work for a certain device, the downside is you have to have the horsepower yourself to enable play, but this is very freeing for pc gamers to play on the move. This is really cool. Great video as well, I watched it twice.

Would love this service if it wasn't buggy and there were paid or free servers so you didn't need a gaming PC

Pros:

Free

Cons:

Buggy, slow connection, need a gaming PC to run server

Andrew Sampson
Hi Adrian, Sorry you had issues with our service, can you share some of these bugs you ran into? As for slow connections, this comes down to your internet and hardware as nothing is actually going through our servers. You need to properly configure the streaming for your machine.
Vladislav Sozonov

There much more powerful app with the same idea โ€” playkey.net

Pros:

have a Mac so no pros yet

Cons:

PC only

Andrew Sampson
The Rainway web client allows you to play across most platforms without any extra downloads. Our self-hosted server is currently Windows only with plans for a macOS and Linux variant down the line.
Egor Gurev
Thanks Vladislav. I am founder of Playkey and just noticed accidentally your post! It motivates to make our product much better.

I tried years ago another platform with similar purposes: http://onlive.com/. I never understood why this platform closed the service, It was really disruptive for me, I loved it! Looking forward to seeing what happens with this project!
Petya Petrov

good luck, you still have much space to grow ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Pros:

another breakthrough in mobile gaming

Cons:

need a PC, but I have mac

Aelia Yousaf
This is a genius product - well done guys. also the people who are leaving "Con" comments like only for PC, or no MAC - should really read the description before leaving those comments - it clearly says "Rainway lets you leverage the power of your PC to play your favorite games on any device..."
Nils Westhoff
Was excited to try it, however, the server isn't starting on my computer. Alright, those things happen. So I took the time to troubleshoot it with a developer on their Discord and after some time they told me something like yeah I have no idea how to fix it. Hope it works for others, but can't recommend in its current state unfortunately... Pros: uses my gaming computer, clients for lots of OSes/environments Cons: it doesn't work at all, support wasn't helpful
Pim de Witte
Really love the concept of this. Great job @andrew, really cool to have seen this project through development and all the way up until this moment. Hope you guys can keep killing it! Pros: Awesome idea and if executed right, can be used a ton Cons: Always at a slight disadvantage with certain hardcore pc games (such as pubg) since you're playing vs mouse and keyboard :-)
Jesse A Copas
