So much spam in the comments. Platejoy, hunted by "GaryVee" - 16 glowing reviews all from fake accounts, all who have only ever upvoted PlateJoy. PH obviously allowing it, maybe due to $$$, but it's just so disappointingly obvious. Just thought you should know. This comment will likely be buried.

@itsjoeturner You're 100% wrong, Joe. Gary is a real person (one of our investors) and we emailed the link out to our customers when we launched on Product Hunt yesterday - many created accounts to comment. But I guess it's a good sign that the comments are so good you think they're fake. :)

Congrats on the launch! What do you think is the most misguided dietary advice? Will you please start an advice column? Thanks, Hungry in Hungary

I love this, can't wait to try it for next week's meals. I've tried other meal planning services and they are good but take a lot of tweaking to deal with allergies and picky kids. Plus, the Instacart integration is 💥. One thing to note if you've never tried meal plans or Instacart...despite the costs you often save money in the end due to less food waste and avoiding impulse buys at the grocery store.
Christina Bognet
@kleneway Thank you, Kevin! We're all ears for feedback - can't wait for you to try it.

Platejoy is one of my favorite apps. I don't push many things, but I recommend this constantly. It's the perfect thing for fitting healthy eating into a busy lifestyle without eating the same thing every day. The redesign makes it even easier to use. Just renewed my membership for the year and can't recommend it enough!
Christina Bognet
@ashmchang This made our day! Thank you, Ashley!!! Love that you're loving the re-design, we love you back!

Just to make a suggestion: I could really use this kind of plan, however all options are multiple choice, and therefore is not very tailored to any individual. For example, i have a problem where i cannot eat: nuts, dairy, gluten, dried fruit, and most proteins that are not ocean-based, but there is nowhere in the app for me to explain that. 😟
Christina Bognet
@nassaraf Hi Naomi! There is! You can exclude nuts, dried fruit, and any proteins you'd like by searching for those ingredients in the exclusion ingredient search bar. There are also two questions about excluding gluten and dairy so you can do the same too. Feel free to email us if you need more help with this: service@platejoy.com

@cbognet @platejoy Hi Christina. Sorry, I really can't find where I can enter that information. Maybe you can point me in the right direction? Happy to also move this offline to my name at gmail. https://www.evernote.com/l/AefEx...
Christina Bognet
@nassaraf @platejoy Hi Naomi - the questions around excluding foods and following certain diets are further up on that page - questions 2-5. Feel free to email us at service@platejoy.com if you still have trouble!

Hi all, We’re excited to launch our brand new app design (on both iOS and Android!) to make data-driven healthy meal planning easier. We’re all about helping you feel your best through cooking and eating well--without spending hours searching for recipes and making shopping lists. To do this, we use data about your lifestyle, preferences, and goals to design a custom meal plan for you each week. You can take your personalized grocery list to the store, or send it to Instacart with a single click (in 30 cities) for ingredient delivery in an hour. Your recipes scale to the optimal portion size of you + your family members. What’s new: * We’ve re-designed the app UX (let us know what you think!) * We’ve added plans: whole30, ketogenic, low FODMAP, low carb, pre diabetes, and a few others. * We’ve launched a ten-day free trial available to everyone (you should sign up for this on web or mobile web before downloading the app) * We’ve updated our algorithms that remember what you have in your pantry and use ingredients across recipes each week to reduce food waste and save you money. We're super inspired to make eating well and feeling great easier. Would love to answer any questions + thanks for checking it out! -Christina

@cbognet I'm really excited for the new app to launch on iOS. These are all things I've been waiting to see with the current app.. Love platejoy and happy to keep providing UX feedback.. - Love, consistent platejoy users + UX researcher ;)

I love PlateJoy! Makes meals manageable and cheaper. The level of personalization is unlike anything else out there.

How much does this cost?
Daniel
Hi @scawtent! $69 for six months, or $99 for a year. 10 day free trial to start, so you can give it a try before paying.
David West
Looks like a lovely app but a) shame there's that dreaded sign-in wall when first open the app b) also I can't register on my device via the app itself c) I read the privacy policy but it doesn't mention the lifestyle info you guys keep/need on registration. Any plans to revamp the sign-in/sign-up process? Can see you guys losing lots of peeps with it as it is 😳
Daniel
@david_west A trial period on the app is a great idea. Unfortunately, with respect to b, until we integrate with Apple's in-app payment system (and give Apple 30% of revenue), Apple required removal of every mechanism for subscribing (and even language and terms of service that mentioned subscribing) prior to approving the app for the app store. So for now, the app is for customers who sign up for the trial through the web app.
David West
@bluejade Makes sense. One thing I will say is people shouldn't think that Apple will take 30% of the revenue as such - I encourage friends considering app development to think about the extra revenue that they generate by having Apple support their app in their ecosystem. They may also actively promote the apps on occasion - to help offset that perceived 'cost'. Not to mention that if you have recurring subscriptions, Apple will take just 15% if you retain them after a year. Hoping it's going to be a quick one to improve/implement for you though once the trial is over with
David West
@bluejade One other thing - I signed up for the trial but have not got my account details / password. When I tap 'Forgot Password' and enter my email, it shows me my previous preferences automatically, from any device whatsoever. Can you guys fix that quickly? That's just not how you should authenticate users. Anyone can grab that personal info at present... 😟
Daniel
@david_west Is there particular information on the preferences page that you are concerned about? At that step of the process, the user hasn't authenticated. There isn't really sensitive information (e.g. a phone number, a last name) until someone signs up (either on the sign up page or by going through the checkout process), at which point, the account requires a password to get into any part of the account. If someone doesn't sign-up, we delete the information after a while. Given this combination of low-sensitivity information and limited period, we opted for helping visitors avoid losing preferences between visits (since visitors often arrive via one device and complete sign-up on another, and visitors used to get confused by resetting a password when they hadn't entered one to begin with).
David West
@bluejade Appreciate what you're saying but I would really expect after entering my preferences to be given a password to help safeguard and store those. There's plenty of information in there that is sensitive or commercially useful to anyone querying your servers. Weight, name, email, diet. Not sure anyone would want that information available in the public domain. It also isn't clear to me that I must go through and add meals before completing registration (a prompt may help this). I personally don't see the benefit of storing those preferences without a password. I'd much rather they don't get linked under an email until that setup is complete. Perhaps I'm more of a "tin foil hat" guy than most but during a time that privacy is really really hot on people's agenda, the way you manage information during this process concerns me and will likely concern others. That said, I see lots of positive feedback and lots of happy users here... so congrats on building a well-loved product!

I was introduced to PlateJoy about a year ago. I needed food ideas that were simple yet tasty. *enters PlateJoy* This app has been a game changer for me. It accommodates my dietary restrictions while offering a variety of meals from all cultures. I get a shopping list and recipes each week and everything is user friendly. Because of PlateJoy, I've prepared things I've never heard of and have enjoyed each bite along the way! Customer service is always helpful and friendly. I'm always so excited to taste what I've prepared and sharing the awesomeness with friends. Do yourself a flavor and give PlateJoy a shot. You won't be disappointed 😋😋😋

PlateJoy is a fantastic app! We have been using it for nearly one year. The app let's you put in your likes, dislikes, goals, menu preferences, etc... It customizes to you. We love the recipes and the shopping list that even lets you add your own items not in the menu is fantastic. It is so easy to use and LOVE.
Christina Bognet
@chiolip Mary! You are the sweetest - so glad you are loving your experience!! <3

Returning to work full time after my maternity leave, this meal planning app was just what I needed. I've always enjoyed meal planning, prepping, and cooking- however it was taking away time I no longer had to spare. Fast forward a year later, I am still actively using the app every week to plan delicious, healthy, vegan meals for my family. There are many great features on the app and website- the digital pantry keeps track of ingredients you have, the prepopulated shopping lists, the rating of each recipe allowing the site to learn your tastes and present recipes you will love- however one of my favorite features is that you can say how many people will be eating. For example, I have dinner with my husband every night, but often lunch is just me. Plate joy has a feature where I can put how many people will be eating each meal- it will then adjust the recipes and shopping lists accordingly. I can't recommend this app highly enough!
Christina Bognet
@devyn_giumarra this is really awesome to hear, Devyn, and especially nice to hear that all of the little features we toil over are helpful to you. Lots of love goes into building it and it's nice that the feelings are mutual. :)

A few products have changed my life so much that I have a hard time remembering how I managed before they came along: Uber is one of them, but PlateJoy is the one I can't live without. It makes eating healthy so easy and cheap that I can't stop recommending it to my friends. Admittedly every couple of months my wife and I do get tired of cooking and give it a rest for a week, but after that one week of eating out we're always eager to get back to the healthy delicious recipes that PlateJoy provides.
Christina Bognet
@carlos_ochoa Carlos!!! Muchas gracias!!!! I took a screenshot of your comment and sent it to my parents. <3 Thank you for the kind words!
Mohammed Taha
How apt is the designed meal plans for different geographies, nationalities and culture?
Christina Bognet
@taha_tweets Hi Mohammed! We have customers all over the world but truthfully it's been designed for north american users (according to what's available at the grocery store, etc.) Still - some of our happiest customers are overseas. Best to check out a trial and see if it works for you.
Carlos Ochoa
@taha_tweets I'm in Mexico and I've been using it (and loving it) for a year with very few issues. I do wish I had the option to get ingredient quantities in the metric system, but on the other hand now I'm a pro at quickly converting from imperial units into metric in my head when I'm at the supermarket. There's very few ingredients that I haven't been able to find here (notably spaghetti squash) but it's easy to substitute for another ingredient that will do the trick and still taste great. Like @cbognet said, give it a try and see if it works for you.
Damon Krytzer
At the suggestion of my nutritionist I downloaded the app. It's been a fixture in our kitchen for over a year now. We had been eating out most nights but PlateJoy has added a lot of creativity and simplicity to eating home. While I have always been fit, addressing my diet and eating home more frequently has helped me to maintain weight down 15lbs from my prior normal. And, the shopping list/ability to download to Instacart has made the shopping and prep mindless.
Christina Bognet
@damon_krytzer This is awesome, Damon - really appreciate the comment and so excited to hear you're down 15 lbs - that's not easy to do, and pretty amazing.

I started using PlateJoy because I wanted to become vegetarian and just wasn't sure how to make that full change with my meals and lance nutrition . Their app is so easy to use and the meals are delicious and easy to make. They create shopping list and provide how to videos for some of the cooking list. Someone contacted me right after I signed up to check in and ask if I had any questions and to give me suggestions. This app, the people, and the food are amazing. They have a lot of different meal options. If you aren't vegetarian you should still use it because their other recipes are great too. This has really helped me and I've even lost weight.
Christina Bognet
@dolphinsek Shannon, that's so wonderful to hear and congrats on the weight loss. We're so glad the app has been easy to use and so grateful for your words of encouragement!
Katrina Price
I love PlateJoy! There's so much customization available and I love that I feel like I have control over my menu (unlike programs that have just a few options and they send you the ingredients). My husband and I used to hate putting together a meal plan and it'd be a long, drawn-out conversation every week trying to get the other person to do it. This is so simple and can be done in 30 seconds, plus it integrates to instacart so I can get my groceries ordered at the same time. This has been such a timesaver!
Christina Bognet
@katrina_price Love that we're saving you that conversation every week and so glad you're enjoying the Instacart integration (it's one of my favorite parts, too). Thank you!!
Deja Battagline
I started a healthy weight loss journey at the beginning of 2016 for my wedding that September. I was working out, eating well, and losing weight. About ten pounds from my goal, though, I found myself super bored with the foods I was cooking and unable to lose those last few pounds. I had been a serial pinner on Pinterest but I still fell back into the same dinner routines and grocery store purchases. I stumbled across PlateJoy and signing up was one of the best decisions I could have made. It was incredibly cheap (less than two cookbooks and way more personalized!). It allowed me to select meal plans that were pescatarian (sea + vegetarian) and healthy! It portioned the food out for my fiance and myself, with nutrition guides for both of us. It allowed me to add back in carbs and fats in a healthy way that I had previously been denying myself. The best part though, was they sent the shopping lists to Instacart for my in home shopping convenience. So with a few months left, I made four easy, healthy, exciting dinners with the click of a few buttons in my instacart app each and every week! I easily dropped the weight and felt even more nourished and excited about the foods I was eating. Months after the wedding I am still using my PlateJoy app. It might not be every week I request a new menu, but even on off weeks, I find myself pulling up old recipes I've had on PlateJoy to make. It makes me feel like a professional chef and my husband is certainly happy with the results too :) I have recommended PlateJoy to anyone who will listen, including my sister who just had her first child and is looking for specific healthy meals while still nursing. We signed her up and looked together and they even had dinner recipes for her! Amazing! You really should try it out. You won't regret it.

Listen to me! You will want this to make your life easier! And it's better than any other meal plan apps I've ever tried! I am not one person to be super sales-y at all and in fact it makes me uncomfortable. BUT PlateJoy is my one exception. I'm an active user and actually use it every week! I have tried other meal plans and yes some of them are okay, but here's what I like better about PlateJoy: The personalization. I am a relatively picky eater so it's been a nightmare with other plans, but not PlateJoy. I can exclude every thing I don't like! Then I can choose specific types of meal plans preferences; to mix things up I've gotten to try low sodium, low carb, ketogenic, paleo, clean eating. It even takes into account my preferences on leftovers, type of items (brown or white rice, type of milk, etc.), appliances, and variety. I can change my preferences at any time and choose what stays or goes in my meal queue. You can choose as many and as little days and meals or create two plans the same day and it doesn't upcharge you. After I input the data, it automatically takes account of my preferences for me, organizes my recipes, and provides a shopping list. No fuss. Sometimes I tweak a recipe or double ingredients because I use it for meal prepping. As a very busy person, PlateJoy makes my life easier. It can for you, too! If you're still hesitant, try the free trial! When I did, I stayed on because I was hooked by the personalization, affordability, and convenience.
Christina Bognet
@brea_ramos So kind of you to say these things, Brea, and we feel particularly special to have passed your "sales-y" threshold. Excited to keep making the product better for you in the future. <3
