Wow 54% of fruits and veggies going to waste, I couldn't imagine it would be that much. That's a great app you built there, with a honorable purpose. So if I understand correctly, Perfekto is only available in Latin America at the moment. Are you planning on expanding it?

I'm Jan and co-founded Perfekto together with @anahi_sosa with the goal to reduce food waste in Latin America. ✊

🤯 THE PROBLEM
Today, 1/3 of all produced food is wasted. Food waste is responsible for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, food demand is expected to increase anywhere between 59% to 98% from 2005 to 2050. Reducing food waste is crucial to decrease the burden on our planet.
Unlike the U.S. or Europe, where most food waste happens at the consumption level, in Latin America, 72% of food waste occurs prior to it. Why?
- Strict industry standards around aesthetics (too ugly, too small, too big, bruised, etc.)
- Inefficient supply chains (supply and demand mismatch, several intermediaries, no cold chains etc.)
In Latin America:
- 54% of fruits and veggies end up being wasted
- Producers do not offer their imperfect products as they assume there is no market for it
- Consumers do not know these imperfect products exist and that they are being wasted
🍌 THE PERFEKT SOLUTION
At Perfekto we offer a subscription box of fruits and veggies that otherwise end up wasted due to imperfections or oversupply - delivered right to your doorstep.
We create a market for ‘overlooked products’ to reduce food waste. We source seasonal and local products only, directly from producers and thereby shorten the supply chain significantly while maintaining a controlled temperature. Thanks to the subscription model, we can match supply and demand to avoid over-buying stock that ends up wasted.
How does it work?
1. Sign up and choose your box size, frequency and your preferences. Don’t like Papaya? We won’t include it.
2. According to your preferences, we will build your surprise box. Don’t like surprises? We’ve got you covered. Two days prior to delivery you can choose which seasonal products you want in your box.
3. We source our products directly from producers, build your box and deliver it to your doorstep. Thereby your products are always fresh. Enjoy!

🙋 WHY WE ARE BUILDING THIS
Anahí worked at Unilever and Uber / Cornershop before and her father is a citrus producer in Mexico. Across her life, she experienced first-hand how food is being wasted for frankly stupid reasons.
In my case, I grew up in a Swiss farming village (with more 🐮s than people) and worked as a waiter during my studies, witnessing the hard work needed to produce food and the amount we waste.
Learning that in Latin America 72% of food is wasted prior to the consumption stage, we knew where to set our focus.
Looking forward to growing the Perfekto community and continue to rescue imperfect food together. 💚

Love the mission! Food waste has always been a huge challenge in Latam. Curious to understand how are you sourcing and qualifying the producers?
@simonvl Thanks Simon! It is indeed quite a challenge. Today we are sourcing products from producers at the 'central de abastos' and a few products are brought to us directly by producers themselves. We are buying from producers who are local and offer seasonal products with the premise of them ensuring that products are fresh, even if imperfect. In both cases we need to continue to improve the process and also want to bring more transparency to customers regarding where the products come from and who the producers are behind the product - but that's still a bit of a way to go :)
