My name is John, I'm one of the Co-founders of Pangea.app, and I'm really excited to share what we've been building!
We hope Pangea will resonate with people who have tried using traditional freelance platforms in the past but experienced the misalignments in incentives and want a better alternative.
The large mark-ups on all paid invoices, the limitations in converting to full-time teammates, and the general sketchiness on both sides of these marketplaces are things we want to address at Pangea.
By charging companies an annual membership to join the network instead of commission fees and off-boarding fees, we can promote better platform dynamics for both talent and companies.
As a startup, we've experienced the benefits of working with talent on a contract-to-hire basis. It's a great way to learn if the working relationship is a good fit for both sides.

@between_team Hey David! TBH most of the changes we've made have been a result of customer discovery on the startup side.
1. Access to a curated network of talent that is pre-ranked where you can quickly access their portfolios and project work. (Mostly 2-5+ years of experience)
2. No talent mark-up (e.g some platforms charge a 50% surcharge) and no fee if you convert them. so you can actually use the platform to contract-to-hire
3. Integrated contracts, time-tracking, and payments (with automated 1099 filling). So you can onboard/offboard talent seamlessly and compliantly
Costs is 50% less than Welfront and 90% less than LinkedIn :)

I like it so far; My one nitpick is, for the default images for projects, maybe have more than one variation on the default image. An agent/recruiter is so busy, they may think that it's the same project posted twice and not look further.
Our first hire (who is now our Tech Lead) was first introduced to us as a contractor, but the platform we found him on wasn't built for us to easily hire him off of it. This totally hits the nail on the head when it comes to underserved opportunities. Congrats Pangea team!!

@andrewthhompson In that case, is there a possibility of a community feature, however limited? I'd like something that keeps me going back to the site and not only waiting on alerts.

Congrats on the re-launch! Great thinking. After spending many tens of thousands of dollars on contracts with TopTal, I'd love to explore alternate options that aren't percentage based commissions (and where the talent gets most of the money).
@fixie Thanks Jordan! We heard the same thing time and time again - paying $75 an hour but getting someone who was only making $35... It's the problem with the entire staffing industry model. And on top of that they make it super hard (and expensive) if you try to hire someone you like as a full-time W2 (Toptal is around $30,000 to offboard someone). It came up as a complaint on nearly every call we had, except for the one guy who really liked lighting money on fire for some reason.
There is a lot of interesting stuff here.

I started using Pangea in 2020 for small projects here and there throughout the pandemic. After graduation in 2021, I used it to build and scale my full-time freelance business. I've now made over $100k on Pangea alone. Quite literally, my career wouldn't be where it is today without the product.
