"Two weeks ago, James Salter died at the age of 90, and I found myself moved to read his work for the first time. I’d been meaning to for a while, and I found it a bit strange—and more than a little bit morbid—that it wasn’t until the Salter’s passing that I actually did it. And yet, almost universally, the death of a writer almost always renews interest in his or her work. I picked up A Sport and a Pastime, considered by many to be his best. In preparation for being interviewed in a documentary about Salter’s life, critic James Wolcott said, “I brought with me my beat-up paperback copy of A Sport and a Pastime, the closest thing I have to a psalm book.”
