3 things that excite me:
- Snap to gallery
- split screen mode
- video pop-out
What are the performance stats vs something like chrome?
I've been a long-time chrome user and more than happy to change but want some knock-out punches to convince me :)
(good start is using google search vs bing ha, nice!)
@bentossell Hey Ben! Yeah those were definitely a few of our favorites internally as well.
Under the hood Opera Neon is built using the same browser engine as the main Opera browser so performance figures will be similar to our tests we release on our main browser.
Our main focus with Neon was to explore new ways of bringing beautiful web content front and center in the browser experience. Neon will not replace the current Opera browser but is simply our vision for the future of how browsers might look in the future. Some of its new features are expected to be added to Opera this spring.
@chetaaron apart from the highlighted features, i feel when AI comes into a browser, that will change everything. As a part of my research in this, i feel you can also consider this possibility in the future of the Neon (which is the future of the browser).
Oh my goodness... I actually think I might love this. The video looks really light-hearted and fun.
Real question... Battery Life? Please be good to me.
It does the important things for sure...๐ But sadly no touchbar... ๐ข
Two things. Extensions support + VPN this is something I need in a modern browser, especially dev tools. The browser itself is very nice and fresh, I really like it.
Opera Neon is a concept browser built from the same browser engine as the Opera browser; itโs designed to allow users to focus on the most important part of the internet: the content. Opera Neon will provide users with fun ways to interact with web content, including the ability to drag and push things around, and even to even pop content out from the web.
@neerajt4 Thanks for the hunt!
We are very excited to finally release our new concept browser, Opera Neon. By taking the established conventions of what desktop browsers have traditionally looked and felt like and throwing them out the window we freed ourselves to explore and re-imagine what desktop browsers could be.
A few features debuting in Opera Neon's completely refreshed user interface include:
New start page using usersโ current desktop background image.
A left sidebar with video player, image gallery, and download manager.
A new visual tab bar on the right side of the browser window that makes it easier to distinguish between tabs.
An intelligent system that automatically manages tabs; like gravity, frequently-used tabs float to the top, while rarely-used tabs will sink to the bottom.
A completely new omnibox, supporting top search engines and open search.
Also, new ways of enjoying web content have been added:
Video pop-out, which lets users to watch videos while browsing other web pages
Snap-to-gallery, which allows users to snapshot and crop any part of a web page and save to the gallery for later use.
A split screen mode which allows for two pages to be used simultaneously.
We would love to hear your thoughts!
At first glance, it feels pretty fresh. I really love the snap to gallery feature because I find myself taking screenshots increasingly often. I also love the fullscreen mode, makes websites feel like desktop apps. Do you guys have the Opera VPN built into this one? Would love that to be added. I dont know if this would replace Chrome(because of the Dev Tools) for me but it makes things so much neater!
This is beautiful! Going to set as my default for the next week just to play around. Love the fact that it uses clear icons for tabs on the right hand side, much easier to find where I was, especially using several billion tabs at a time
@chetaaron Would like to echo everyone else's opinion about the very much needed addition of extension support. Ads are the bane of my, and I suppose everyone else's existence.
This is looking HOT, cool and interesting !!! - Takk til Opera-teamet!
Why does it feel that Opera is one of the few, if not only Web Browser creating companies that actually truly innovate?
Opera while having never had a dominant market share sadly or even a fair take from the industry, has had more '1st's than probably any other browser ...
I was very disappointed to hear of it's going to Chromium [and getting rid of the far superior DragonFly Inspector] and even more so of its Browser business being bought by a Chinese group...
I'm just hoping innovation will not stop but increase... Keep up the great work!!!
Looks cool but has a few bugs on Mac fullscreen mode. Also I'm not sure about a tab bar constantly taking so much screen width when using it on a laptop. Lastly I get the icon is meant to be "neon" but seriously it doesn't look good on a mac dock (not sure about win10). Maybe add a background? I don't know, but something needs to be done.
๐ Hat (if I ever wore one) goes off to the Opera team! As soon as I saw the video, instantly downloaded & within 5 minutes am finding the UI slick, clean & overall it's pretty responsive. Congrats!
Here are few notes to the guy that made it.
I've been using neon for a few hours last day on my MAC and there are few things that I wish were better.
1. To much space is "wasted" when using the split screen option.
---- left side sidebar could be smaller
---- address bar could be smaller
---- right sidebar could be smaller
---- make true full-screen option for the app (look under 3.)
2. Ability to add the tab from the right sidebar, I was looking for a button there for more than few times.
3. Full-screen button (green dot on the application window), unexpectedly goes to fullscreen for one window, I was expecting to see the app in full screen with all the features available.
4. In the split screen, I can't quite figure out how the tab sidebar is related to the screens, switching between them where only changing the right screen, I could not figure out how to tab that is already open in that left one change in the same way as I can the right one - the only way I could do it was to drag it one more time into that left spot.
5. Clicking on the tab in the sidebar that is already open will open that "new window" splash screen? Now combine that with #4.
Overall I like the idea and love the parts of it, I would love to use it because you've solved some real problems, just make it a little bit less cool and optimize it a bit more for better UX, and I would continue using this product.
LOVE this product guys! My only gripe is that some important sites, they have no formatting/styling? i.e. dribbble, bitbucket... quite a few are rendered useless. Kind of important for me to use these to be my default browser? @marcin_mnich@janstandal@marcin_simonides@chetaaron Any tips?
This is great! A sidebar instead of top bar, who needs that much horizontal space, our eyes get tired easily with too much horizontal scans. Would be great to have dark or no title bar though.
It's great to have so many new browsers coming up recently. Wonder what's the basic tool chain for building your own browser? Blink/webkit core? Electron?
Two big things missing that prevent me from using this today. DuckDuckGo as a search option I can set instead of Google (a must) and bookmarks. Lack of extension support would be a pain as well, but I can live without 1Password and uBlock Origin for a bit. Otherwise, it's nice to see some innovation around UX for the browser.
@jameskoole just do this for DuckDuckGo or any other search engine you want. The settings of Neon are just like Chrome. In fact, it is a Chrome browser: https://duckduckgo.com/install?t=hs
Just lost my comment so I'll post again -
I'd love to see page groups (like Toby extension) and the same for the Player section. Being able to group podcasts (mainly from Product Hunt) would be very useful indeed!
Lastly a screen recorder to complement the screen snapshot feature (output to WebM?).
HI Opera makers, @marcin_mnich@chetaaron@marcin_simonides@janstandal
So is there any plans to further opera neon, or will it forever stay a prototype/concept? I tested it out on release and I thought it was really cool.
Thanks!
I really love the interface and it looks better than chrome imo. However I'm kinda locked by all my chrome extensions. Also Chrome's multi user support is a necessity for me. I've tried quite a few browsers in the past and most of them look really cool, but I've got to switch back to chrome in the end for the same reason.
@sgzhaohang Agreed, a Google profile column to switch between them but in the same browser. I'm sure there's a lot of technical challenges to doing that but I'd love it all the same!
@sgzhaohang I'm in the same boat. I use multiple Chrome profiles for each of my Google accounts (work, personal, etc). It's the one feature that keeps me using Chrome, despite the horrible battery drain on my Mac.
Love what you've done with the UX. It's about time somebody tried shaking it up a bit! My only question is, is there a Linux version? (Currently stuck on my Windows machine, so I can't tell if the download link detects OS)
Already set as my default browserโ๏ธ Are you planning to add support for browser extensions?
Edit: found the Extensions option, but when I open it, it returns an error.
