Onyx puts the world's smartest trainer in your pocket. With just the camera on your phone it counts your reps, corrects your form, brings tracking to nearly any exercise, and provides audio workouts personalized to your performance in real time.
Concept is great but that quick summary of "x app that watches you" is a big no from me. Consider rephrasing or asking around to see if they concur? It really stood out to me as a negative.
That's funny. When I hosted a Media Hack Weekend in 2016, guys built a prototype of really similar app.
Check this demo (it is in Russian, but you can see the prototype):
P.S. Upvoted!
Hey Product Hunt!
We’re a team of engineers and product people who also happen to be fitness junkies 💪
We started Onyx with the goal of making personalized fitness accessible anywhere/anytime, and building the greatest on-demand experience without the need for expensive equipment.
While we love the feedback and energy you get from real instructors/classes, we’re not big fans of the scheduling or the high cost. And while some cool products have come out that help you track your progress and bring the class home, they’re limited to few exercise and are even more $$$
Onyx puts the world’s smartest digital trainer in your pocket. With just the camera on your phone, it:
- Counts your reps for nearly any exercise
- Corrects your form in real-time
- Measures your progress
- Lets you compete with your friends
Since we love PH, we're giving a free month to the first 50 people who sign up through our launch! Just use promo code PRODUCTHUNT. Everyone gets a week free 👌
If you have any questions let us know, and we’d love to hear your feedback 🙂
@asafagus why hasnt this been done before?! great idea though, well done! Question - what is your privacy policy like? Because effectively your app records people on video?
@paroma Thanks Paroma! We actually don't record raw video or send it to our servers. The tracking is done on device which is also why it's in real time :) Some depth data is logged for debugging purposes. You can read it here: https://www.onyx.fit/privacy-policy
Holy shit, I was just thinking of building an app like this yesterday during my workout. Glad you already built this, but now I expect you guys to do a couple other things too:
1. Get an Android app out asap.
2. If I'm following an Onyx program which says 15 reps for Exercise A, and I do 12. Learn that, learn my limit (ask me why I stopped at 12 if need be) and then automatically adjust the program accordingly.
@parasharanmol
1. Agreed!
2. That's a great idea, we will definitely look into how we can do that while giving you the option to bring it back up as you improve
The second "Mirror" started getting press, I wondered why the mirror part was required. Clearly it's not.
Does this work on a tv via airplay, appletv, chromecast or whatever?
It would be even greater, if you could integrate other fitness devices to capture data that can’t be measured with this app, so the app can suggest types of exercises, also you could train AI model mare better recommendations from this.
@yevgeniy_pozdeyev Thank you! Right now the app only works on the newest iPhones (iPhone X or above), but we're hoping to make it available on other devices as soon as possible
Great product! Do you have any plans on analyzing the activity from different sport events? Let's say when user plays football / soccer / hockey - number of accelerations, intensity or any other parameters.
What a fantastic product. Tried it today during my workout and loved using it.
I felt that my iPhone has really low speaker and smaller screen to follow instructions. Airpods solved the audio issue but wondering how cool it would be if I could share it on TV via ScreenShare or something. 🤩
@asafagus Update: I missed the gym yesteday and considered using it. And I have nothing but love for the product. Had one of the best workouts. Kudos to the team!!
Love the idea! I'm glad someone finally implemented it! Can't wait to give it a shot.
It would also be great if people could share their workout video or a fun silhouette video. Could help with word of mouth marketing or even going viral! ;)
Really nice work guys! I do have a question tho.
How fast will the battery of the phone run out? And if you did test this, for which device did you test it?
A few months back, @rajavick told me about this team. Downloaded their testflight beta and was blown away by their tech and overall UX. Found myself using the product often on days I didn't have time/energy to go to the gym, but still wanted to squeeze in a quick 5-10min workout from the convenience of my home.
The gamification of the leaderboard was insanely motivating for me too! In real-time, the instructor will announce how many spots up/down on the leaderboard you're rising/falling with each passing second.
Think this could be huge, and I'm a big fan! 💯
@mikedane7 The app is free to try for a week and then there's a subscription for full access. It's not available on google play yet but we're be building it as soon as possible!
I’ve been looking for something that helps me understand my form. I’ve been recording a lot of my workouts and sending them to a trainer friend to get feedback, so it’s pretty amazing to get it in real time! Also I like that it shows you the video example before you start each exercise so you have some time to remember how to do it.
