Onyx — The fitness app that watches you

Onyx puts the world's smartest trainer in your pocket. With just the camera on your phone it counts your reps, corrects your form, brings tracking to nearly any exercise, and provides audio workouts personalized to your performance in real time.

Concept is great but that quick summary of "x app that watches you" is a big no from me. Consider rephrasing or asking around to see if they concur? It really stood out to me as a negative.
Pavlo Pedenko
That's funny. When I hosted a Media Hack Weekend in 2016, guys built a prototype of really similar app. Check this demo (it is in Russian, but you can see the prototype):
P.S. Upvoted!

@pavlo_pedenko This is awesome!

Hey Product Hunt! We’re a team of engineers and product people who also happen to be fitness junkies 💪 We started Onyx with the goal of making personalized fitness accessible anywhere/anytime, and building the greatest on-demand experience without the need for expensive equipment. While we love the feedback and energy you get from real instructors/classes, we’re not big fans of the scheduling or the high cost. And while some cool products have come out that help you track your progress and bring the class home, they’re limited to few exercise and are even more $$$ Onyx puts the world’s smartest digital trainer in your pocket. With just the camera on your phone, it: - Counts your reps for nearly any exercise - Corrects your form in real-time - Measures your progress - Lets you compete with your friends Since we love PH, we're giving a free month to the first 50 people who sign up through our launch! Just use promo code PRODUCTHUNT. Everyone gets a week free 👌 If you have any questions let us know, and we’d love to hear your feedback 🙂

@asafagus why hasnt this been done before?! great idea though, well done! Question - what is your privacy policy like? Because effectively your app records people on video?
Asaf Avidan Antonir
@paroma Thanks Paroma! We actually don't record raw video or send it to our servers. The tracking is done on device which is also why it's in real time :) Some depth data is logged for debugging purposes. You can read it here: https://www.onyx.fit/privacy-policy

@asafagus looks awesome Asaf, I just wish I could be a part of the first 50 users, but anyways kudos to you and your team for the great product.

Holy shit, I was just thinking of building an app like this yesterday during my workout. Glad you already built this, but now I expect you guys to do a couple other things too: 1. Get an Android app out asap. 2. If I'm following an Onyx program which says 15 reps for Exercise A, and I do 12. Learn that, learn my limit (ask me why I stopped at 12 if need be) and then automatically adjust the program accordingly.
Asaf Avidan Antonir
@parasharanmol 1. Agreed! 2. That's a great idea, we will definitely look into how we can do that while giving you the option to bring it back up as you improve
Greg Zen at StartupHeroics.com
@parasharanmol I second this! Would love to see this on Android and be able to customize to my personal routine. I'm voting for this anyway

The second "Mirror" started getting press, I wondered why the mirror part was required. Clearly it's not. Does this work on a tv via airplay, appletv, chromecast or whatever?
Asaf Avidan Antonir
@jeremyz123 Not yet but we'll be building it soon! We want to make it very easy to cast to your TV for a full screen experience
Junior Owolabi
It would be even greater, if you could integrate other fitness devices to capture data that can’t be measured with this app, so the app can suggest types of exercises, also you could train AI model mare better recommendations from this.
Evgeny Pozdeev
Amazing, that's what I was missing in Freeletics hah! Great job!:) Does the app require any specific front camera or in can work on any phone?
Asaf Avidan Antonir
@yevgeniy_pozdeyev Thank you! Right now the app only works on the newest iPhones (iPhone X or above), but we're hoping to make it available on other devices as soon as possible
Max Grigoryev
Great product! Do you have any plans on analyzing the activity from different sport events? Let's say when user plays football / soccer / hockey - number of accelerations, intensity or any other parameters.
Asaf Avidan Antonir
@max_grigoryev Not at the moment but it's something we're considering for the future!
Asaf Avidan Antonir
@max_grigoryev Absolutely, thank you!
Clayton Parker
Hahaha I just saw your post on r/xboxFitness !! Long time sub member of that page... I used to make a lot of XboxFitness videos on the youtubes ;)
Asaf Avidan Antonir
@unclejessy4real Awesome! The r/xboxFitness community has been super helpful to us with feedback :) we'll share the launch video there soon
Artem Galenko
Great app! Does it analyze correctness of excercises?
Asaf Avidan Antonir
@unrealartemg Yes! It uses computer vision to understand your body's form, and gives feedback based on that
Sterner
@unrealartemg @asafagus That's great. I always exercise alone, so I don't have anyone to point out if I make any mistakes.
Rushi
What a fantastic product. Tried it today during my workout and loved using it. I felt that my iPhone has really low speaker and smaller screen to follow instructions. Airpods solved the audio issue but wondering how cool it would be if I could share it on TV via ScreenShare or something. 🤩
Asaf Avidan Antonir
@rishijash Glad you loved it! Yeah we usually use it with bluetooth headphones to get the best audio. And agreed, we plan to add TV casting soon!
Rushi
@asafagus Update: I missed the gym yesteday and considered using it. And I have nothing but love for the product. Had one of the best workouts. Kudos to the team!!
Clayton Parker
Wow this is awesome. I was a HUGE XboxFitness Fan, using the xbox one kinect camera for different workouts. I will for sure be checking this out!
Bhushit Agarwal
Love the idea! I'm glad someone finally implemented it! Can't wait to give it a shot. It would also be great if people could share their workout video or a fun silhouette video. Could help with word of mouth marketing or even going viral! ;)
Asaf Avidan Antonir
@bhushitagarwal Glad you like it! And definitely, it's something we're considering for when we add more social features.
Miss Rant
Oh shoot. Only iPhone X and above? You are really limiting yourself. Just canceled my download to my 7 plus. What a shame.
Ion-Alexandru Secara
Really nice work guys! I do have a question tho. How fast will the battery of the phone run out? And if you did test this, for which device did you test it?
Brandon Taleisnik
A few months back, @rajavick told me about this team. Downloaded their testflight beta and was blown away by their tech and overall UX. Found myself using the product often on days I didn't have time/energy to go to the gym, but still wanted to squeeze in a quick 5-10min workout from the convenience of my home. The gamification of the leaderboard was insanely motivating for me too! In real-time, the instructor will announce how many spots up/down on the leaderboard you're rising/falling with each passing second. Think this could be huge, and I'm a big fan! 💯
Asaf Avidan Antonir
@rajavick @brandon_taleisnik Thank you Brandon! I'm so glad to hear you've enjoyed it and it's awesome that you've been around since the testflight!
Mike Dane
Is it free ? and is it available on google play store ?
Asaf Avidan Antonir
@mikedane7 The app is free to try for a week and then there's a subscription for full access. It's not available on google play yet but we're be building it as soon as possible!
Amin
@asafagus If you have a waiting list where I (and those with Android) can already sign up would be great. As we may miss it when is released
Tyler Nass
I’ve been looking for something that helps me understand my form. I’ve been recording a lot of my workouts and sending them to a trainer friend to get feedback, so it’s pretty amazing to get it in real time! Also I like that it shows you the video example before you start each exercise so you have some time to remember how to do it.
Dmitry Kotlyarenko
Exactly what I've been looking for Health and Fitness app. Looks amazing. Can’t wait to start some workouts!
Manuel
Would love to test it! Do you have any promo code for Producthunt?
Asaf Avidan Antonir
@mahnouel Yes! We're giving a month free to the first 50 people that use promo code PRODUCTHUNT
Karsten Chearis
@asafagus where do we enter the code?
