Really excited to be featured on Product Hunt today for our launch of Sharing.
This has been the first step in the big vision from Day 1, and today we're finally ready to share that with the world.
Storage was always a trojan horse for us -- our goal is to make it simple to access anything you could want, anywhere in the world. Think Dropbox for your physical stuff.
Today's launch allows you to search items that are made available from your friends, request to borrow them in a few taps, and have them instantly available in your Omni once approved. They can be at your door anywhere in the Bay Area in under 2 hours, or shipped to you anywhere in the world.
The whole team will be here to answer questions all day!
I shared a few more thoughts personally on this launch as well: https://medium.com/@delk/what-we...
It seems like Amazon is expanding and going deeper into markets every week. Do you worry that Bezos and team will move in this direction, offering second-hand goods on-demand across the country, @delk / @tmceod3?
@rrhoover I think Omni has a nice leg up on Amazon in that they already have huge amounts of people's stuff in storage. Not that Amazon couldn't catch up, but I like the social aspects of Omni - like Airbnb vs. Expedia.
@rrhoover@annaroubos We also think a lot about the difference in intake, single sku logistics management, and distribution as a relatively unique defensibility moat. Not in anyway saying Amazon couldn't do it, but actually a pretty dramatic shift in a really well oiled machine.
Omni is going to be the company that finally solves peer to peer sharing. I've been active in the sharing economy since 2011, including time at Lyft, Collaborative Fund, and Getable, a startup that tried to build a marketplace for product rental - it simply wasn't possible without the liquidity of "owning" the supply. Omni has figured it out, with storage as the short play that unlocks unlimited possibilities down the road.
With a relentless focus on the long game and the execution to back it up, @tmcleod3@delk and squad are going to fundamentally change the way we interact with physical items. Super excited.
@gavid_dold I'll grab this one @delk. Deep security process on the intake side, as well as insurance/guarantees per item. Also... I personally feel that our number one job is item care, so we spend a ton of time on that.
@tmcleod3 could you maybe elaborate a bit more? I understand you insure/guarantee items in storage and in transit to be stored, but what about when an item is rented out to a user? Say I lend out my Titleist driver to another user and the head is snapped in half after his/her use. Who pays? How is the value evaluated? Is it at "fair cost" or MSRP?
@gavid_dold The honest answer is one of the reasons we launched with lending vs renting, was to get a better feel for how these scenarios play out when there isn't money involved. We're functionally just a currier between two people here.
On the backend we track MSRP's and a rough approximation of fair market value for all items. We anticipate charging the rentee a blend between those two or the cost of repairs. Similar to existing 1st party rental marketplaces that exist now around cars, bikes, etc. The renter will never have to worry about at the very least receiving appropriate compensation for negligent occurrence.
@tmcleod3 Awesome, thanks for answering. I get that. Down the line, I think a good idea might be to have a formal system that could show loss/damaged beyond repair costs. That would limit the hesitation from lending behind anxious messes like me.
This is awesome. I'm long on Omni's vision and think this is a natural next step.
Finally got my golf clubs to SF, so will definitely be putting them in my Omni.
Use code 'ETTINGER' for a $25 credit 🔥😏.
Love this app. The photography aspect of the service is what makes the whole Omni experience so high quality, and will make it hard for anyone to copy especially when it comes to monetization. Just like Airbnb took off in the early days thanks to professional photography of listings, Omni makes your valuables more valuable because of gorgeous, multi-angle photos in a beautiful app interface. Well done guys!
@delk this is killer, been following Omni since you came over. Love to see what can happen when people share more stuff vs owning everything themselves, especially on items that aren't in regular use. For example I would love to rent someone's paddleboard for the day 🌊
Excited to see how Omni continues to blaze a new trail for physical goods! Also think your comment "Think Dropbox for your physical stuff" is fantastic mental model for users 👌
Congrats on the launch, team! This is amazing.
How do you think about city expansion? You mention waitlist underneath. How many signups will unlock new cities? cc @Jacobsmith88 you would love this in Detroit.
