Hey ProductHunt! Very excited to be featured here today as we're launching Omni Rentals -- the community here has been unbelievably supportive since our very first launch. Today we're unveiling something we've been working towards since Day One of Omni: empowering you to make money on things you own, and access everything you don't. We have 100k+ items that members manage in Omni, and today we're giving them the power to list them for rentals in a few clicks. Every item is verified and inspected by our team before it hits the rental marketplace, and we handle everything (really, everything) for the owners. No meeting up with the renter, no dealing with payment, no negotiations -- we handle it all. As a renter, this means you now have near-instant access to anything you could want, and you can pay for only the time you need it. You no longer need to buy a drill when you need it for a day, or buy an air mattress when your friends come into town -- you can rent them in Omni and only pay for the time you need them. We handle the delivery & pickup and the items can be at your door in as little as 2 hours. What I'm most excited about here is empowering new experiences -- even a few hours into the launch, there are kayaks, paddle boards, designers clothes, bikes, surf boards, ladders, drills, tents, and 1,000+ other items available to rent. We want to empower everyone to access these items. We believe in a future of Access > Ownership, and this is the first big step towards that vision. I put together some more thoughts on where we've been and where we're going here: https://medium.com/@delk/what-we... We'll all be around all day on ProductHunt to answer questions, fire away!

@delk How is this not getting more upvotes? You just turned storage from a money suck to a revenue source.
Ryan Delk
@andrewwarner Ha, thank you! That's the goal. Tell your peeps about it :)

This makes a lot of sense. If I want to go camping, I can drive to REI and pay $25/ day for a sleeping bag, or rent someone else's through omni for like $10/ day with pickup /delivery. If I own the gear, then I'm not going to use it every weekend so you get to recoup the cost. The only big ? for me is insurance for damage but it can be figured out
Ryan Delk
@evankimbrell Exactly! Your question about insurance is our big value add -- our Omni Shield coverage protects your items not just while they are stored in Omni, but while they are rented out as well. This means that if anything happens to your items, we have your back and will work to make it right.
Ryan McRae
Oh, man. This is fantastic work. What a way to help people earn a little side money on what they already have.
Noel Lynagh
Nice concept! Handling collection and delivery is a great idea. What locations are you operating in?
Ryan Delk
@noellynagh Currently we serve the Bay Area -- Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco, and down in the peninsula to Palo Alto. Expansion to new cities coming soon.
Casey Richardson
GREAT concept. What's the plan to expand this? Are you going to franchise this out to other regions or roll it out yourselves?
Ryan Delk
@casey_richardson We'll own the rollout -- planning on expanding to new markets soon. Where are you based?
Casey Richardson
@delk Based in San Diego, but frequently in Los Angeles and Las Vegas on business also. Would be really rad to see this come to SD/LA. Major housing shortage in SD. Lots of people needing to store items to free up space in spare bedrooms, etc. to capitalize on the booming short-term rental demand.
Ryan Delk
@casey_richardson For sure. San Diego isn't in the immediate expansion plans, but definitely a city we want to get to. Thank you!

Hey @delk, blocked from signing up because I am not in the zipcode. Why not just let me sign up and then alert me when I can use you in my zipcode? If you just block, I will probably just forget about you guys. :( https://imgur.com/a/e20Zu
Ryan Delk
@joshdance Hey Josh, this is a bug that we have a fix going out for shortly. Your account was created, that error message is incorrect. We do exactly what you said -- waitlist you for the service in your zip code :) Sorry about that!
Josh Lewis!
@delk @joshdance I agree completely that it's annoying I don't know that you don't serve my zipcode until after I've entered my email address and password, etc. I understand this is a tactic to get my email address early, but I'd rather be _asked_ if I want to give my email address to be notified instead of "Well, we don't serve you yet, but we already have your email address, so now we're gonna contact you." See the difference in the experience?
Joshua Dance
@delk @joshlewis I see your point. I signed up and want to be contacted, so I don't really have an issue with it. Cheers!
Jack Kim
Pretty cool concept of letting people earn money on some stored items that they aren’t going to use anyways
Erik Torenberg
Congrats on the launch team! I'm seeing lots of items (e.g. air purifiers, chairs) in the beta, can you talk about what other items people are sharing with each other?
Ryan Delk
@eriktorenberg For sure. We've got 1,000+ items available for rent today, with hundreds more being added each day. A few of the most popular items from the Rentals Beta: bikes, tents, drones, VR headsets, sous vide machine, boosted boards, heaters / fans, surfboards, drills, ladders and a ton of fashion items (designer dresses / purses / shoes / etc.).
Charley Ma
Congrats on the launch! Looking forward to giving this a spin for all my equipment sitting in my room
Ryan Delk
@charleyma Thanks! Send me feedback on the experience, we're always looking to improve: r@beomni.com
Jonathan Moyal
Great idea guys!
Victoria
Wow - brilliant idea + great interface! One thing - wish the items on the landing page would directly bring the users to the app to make it even easier to navigate for those interested in the "popular items". Other than that, congrats on the launch!
Thomas McLeod
@viwsun this is designed out and will be live soon. The iOS app already reflects this functionality.
Thomas McLeod
@viwsun @delk gotta love when the team makes the CEO comments obsolete in under 30 minutes.

My bike was not returned from a rental, and I currently do not have visibility into when or whether I'll get reimbursed for it. I didn't really look into the details of their process for handling stolen rental gear (my mistake!) before I started renting it out. Now, as far as I can tell they have no hard contract in place for how to manage reimbursement. It seems like it's just up to their goodwill.

They *say* that there's a process for getting reimbursed, but as far as I can tell my claim went to their "Claims Department" to die. If I actually do get reimbursed, I'll update this review.

Edit: After about a week or two of radio silence, I was informed that a check was heading my way. When I opened it, It was for the amount I'd requested, even though I didn't have a receipt for the bike. So in the end it worked out great. I'll be curious to see if they maintain that level of service going forward.

Pros:

Seamless onboarding process

Cons:

Hand-wavy, not confidence-inspiring approach to insuring rental gear

Anika
Hi Jaime, I'm Anika and I lead the Customer Success team over here at Omni. I'm so sorry to hear that your recent experience with us was less than stellar. I reviewed our conversation history and see that we could have provided much more transparency into our claims process and pushed for a faster resolution. Thank you for your patience as we got that check out to you and for taking the time to share this feedback. Trust is fundamental to our business and we recognize that righting wrongs is a huge part of that. I do hope you’ll stick around to see that this was an anomaly and not the norm. If you’d be open to connecting, I’d love to hear more about your experience: anika@beomni.com.
Jaime McCandless
@beomni @anikaclaire Thanks Anika. I was pleasantly surprised to receive the reimbursement check, and have updated my review accordingly. In fact, everything about the process was great *except* for the lack of transparency in how the situation was going to be handled, which just made me nervous as I realized I had almost no recourse if my claim disappeared into the ether.
Anika
@beomni @jaime_m Totally understood. Many thanks for sharing this feedback. You have my commitment that we will provide more transparency into our claims process!

Omni is the greatest. Their service and customer support is perfect.

Pros:

Super easy way to make some extra cash and get access to pretty much anything.

Cons:

I wish they were everywhere.

Jeff Whitlock
Definitely, love the vision of what you're trying to do here. It's crazy how many things we purchase and just use once. Best wishes!
Jacques H. Bastien
Brilliant!!! Mind blown.
Joe Anderson
Congrats yall! I tried signing up using Facebook and I'm stuck on the "Amost there, confirm your details, enter your phone number" screen. After I type in my details and hit confirm, it's stuck on "Updating your address"
Ryan Delk
@anderson760 Hey Joe, sorry about that, are you on iOS or web?
Joe Anderson
@delk I'm on the web
Mary Palfray-Fabro
@delk Thanks for doing your share to save our planet! This is a pretty obvious and clever way to reduce our carbon footprint. Even if renting is costing me the same, if I know I will only need that tile cutter for one project, why not renting it from my neighbor? My question, like many others, is about insurance or if product is not returned at all. But love the concept for sure.
Benjamin Wheeler
To what degree is quality an issue? That is, there's plenty of stuff I have that I'd rather have you guys take care of and occasionally rent out, but some of it might be in very little demand, like the odd 17 inch LCD monitor. My experience with eBay sales concierge services is that they seldom want to bother to sell any of the stuff I'm selling. So after a few inquiries I give up on trying to use them. Won't that happen with Omni?
Thomas McLeod
@benjamin_wheeler so one of the cool part (to me) is that we still have the storage component, if it rents occasionally it will just offset your storage cost. We inspect items and verify that they are operational and match the description you provide. In some cases (like bikes) we even do routine maintenance. It's our goal to provide you with a passive low effort income source, or at the very least offset your cost for freeing up space. My guess is a monitor rents once every few months for a weekend LAN party (do these still happen?) and you'll be in the money.
Steven Rueter
As far as experimentation with ideas in the sharing economy goes, I love this idea. I know a lot of people who would use this.
Thomas McLeod
@rueter I hope you become one of them!
Steven Rueter
@tmcleod3 how are you doing liability insurance? I know that at a ski or bike rental place you have to sign a liability waiver that if the equipment malfunctions, they can’t be held liable. How does that work in the case of Omni?
Konrad Waliszewski
Love the idea and am a fan of anything @delk works on. Keep up the great work Omni team!
