Oak — Meditation and breathing exercises for geeks

Oak is a community-driven guided meditation and breathing exercise app. Our meditations were built from data gathered in-app as beta testers completed their sessions (or ended them early). This led to hundreds of adjustments in pace, tone, and verbiage. We're geeks: Support for pre/post heart rate tracking (and variability) soon.

It's been fun watching you build Oak in public on your Facebook Group, @kevinrose. 👍🏼 Would you build your next product this way? While there's no "right way" to build products, we've always been proponents of involving a community in the building process.
Kevin Rose
@rrhoover 100%, for most apps, the sooner you can get the community involved the better. We learned so much from the feedback.
Adam DePasqua
@rrhoover @kevinrose Agreed! We're doing the same with our product. The product has transformed completely because of our users.
Kevin Rose
Hi all, looking forward to answering any questions you might have. Here are some more details on how Oak is different: https://medium.com/@kevinrose/oa...
Seth Louey
@kevinrose just downloaded. Going to use it for my afternoon meditation.
Christopher Davis
I've tried most of the meditation apps that are on the market, but have never been able to create a personal meditation practice. Oak is the first app that's made me excited to set aside meditation time. Seriously, love this app. Also, it's a lot of fun to watch that tree. :)
Kevin Rose
@cdavis565 Thanks for the kind words :) let us know if there is anything else we can do to improve it!
Kyle Richey
@cdavis565 @kevinrose I totally agree. Any chance there will be a Meditate duration of less than 10min added, or is that more what the Breathe feature is geared toward?
Kevin Rose
@cdavis565 @imakestrides Yes, breathing is mostly for quick <10 minute
Ian Mikutel
I’ve been beta testing Oak and it helped me finally create a morning meditation routine (on day 59 in a row!) after previous attempts with other apps failed. Oak is simple, beautiful & effective. It’s split into 3 areas (meditate, breathe and wisdom) and has awesome community stats that show you how many other Oakers? (Kevin we need a name for our community haha) have meditated so far that day. Your Oak tree on the home screen grows as you continue to meditate as well. Overall, it’s been super fun to see this app develop over the past few months and help provide feedback in the FB group. Kevin as talked about how he hasn’t seen a meditation app that continues to evolve with user data and usage, and I hope they continue that approach as time goes on to keep pushing the limits of how great a meditation app can be. Can’t wait for them to introduce TM too! 🙏
Kevin Rose
@ianmikutel TM style (mantra) and loving kindness next up! Thanks for your support, Ian!

@ianmikutel I love it for the exact same reasons you described. It makes it super accessible and easy to meditate or just take a moment. I tried all the other apps (Calm, Headspace, etc.) but could never get into a routine, or found their rhythm jarred with my learning curve. This app helped me find a peaceful place inside my busy mind, and see the things that had been stressing me in a different light - all from day one. For that I am very grateful! I particularly like the wisdom section too, and knowing how many people are active. Though I can't see them, it creates a sense of connection. There's something that Oak users have in common but can't quite put my finger on it, but it'd be great to meet more of them.

Been beta testing this for some time, and I have replaced my Headspace subscription with Oak. Beautiful design, and just the right features.

Pros:

- Well designed

- Intuitive

- Well executed feature set

- Free (at least for the moment)

- Integrates with healt kit

Cons:

- Could maybe have something that motivates continued use. E.g. track unbroken chains of meditation or something similar (x method)

Kevin Rose
Thanks, Eivind. You read our minds, the next feature we're slated to build is "streak" tracking. More soon!
Levon - Founder @ Zeroqode
@kevinrose Hi Kevin, my name is Levon, I'm founder of Zeroqode and creator of Zenify meditation app https://www.producthunt.com/post... . As well as a serial maker. would you be interested to buy part or all of Zenify? it's translated to 10 languages and can be a great addition to your Oak meditation app. The concept is different and wouldn't overlap with the one of Oak, rather complement it. We are also now building Zenify bot for Telegram and Slack. It would be the same concept but delivered as a messenger bot. With proper marketing and promotion it can become very successful. Please let me know. Thanks!

Love the transparency behind this project. That's how you build something in 2017! Good job, Kevin đź‘Ź
Seth Louey

Maybe have more of a selection of noises to mediate to.

Pros:

Love the simplicity of the app and the instructional.

Cons:

Wish there was a fire ambient noise.

I've been following the development of Oak through the beta process and as a dedicated user of Insight Timer (643 consecutive days) I can say that if I hadn't gotten rid of my iPhone this would be a go to for personal (without community) meditation. Beautiful product, focused on the right things. Congratulations @kevinrose
Kevin Rose
@airjoshb Thanks!
Stewart Henderson

Loving it so far.

Pros:

Easy to use and develop a practice

Cons:

I haven't found one yet.

Been looking forward to seeing this launch! Perfect timing just as I'm getting back in to meditation.
Kevin Rose
@andreaskam I hope you enjoy it, Andreas. Thanks for checking it out.
Joshua Voydik
Nice work, @kevinrose and @taykay08. Oak is what I want with an unguided meditation app––simple, nice bell sounds, clean UI.
Corbett Magotra
Any plan to include a feedback mechanism? I've tried a ton of apps, but so far the only one I've made progress with has been Muse (http://www.choosemuse.com/). It's pricey, but it works. Is that the intent with the integrations?
Kevin Rose
@lilredcorbett Yes, we hope to gather passive feedback via heart rate and other factors. Early days...we have a lot of experimenting to do
Elavenil
Beautiful app!! Thanks @kevinrose and team. I have tried apps like Headspace, zen, breathe ...etc but not so interesting and too many stuffs in one app. This is interesting and minimalistic approach! Also completed my first 10min meditation today, and felt good. Good work and keep it going!

More stats ... keep up the sounds and customizable aspect .. it is awesome. Maybe some syndicated guided mediations from tara brach if possible?

Pros:

Awesome sounds, nice voices, customizable ...

Cons:

mm maybe more stats and metrics to improve on ...

I've also been part of the beta testing group from the beginning and can't wait to try out the final version. Great job team.
Kevin Rose
@joao_oliveira Thanks for testing/feedback! :)
Ludo De Angelis
Awesome work - really love that it has the goal of weening you off guided meditations. As Kevin said “Monks don’t use meditation apps” And it’s free! Totally expecting to pay for this.
Peter Iliev
Awesome idea. I've been looking for something like Nike+ for meditation, but the apps I found were too expensive for what they do and I end up using playlists on Spotify. I used Oak yesterday and today. The growing tree is really cool idea, and the illustrations are amazing. A little gamification is always good. I expected that the sessions will be different, that they will evolve over time, but it looks like it's the same script, it just starts with "Welcome back" after the first time. I suppose if I listen to the same thing every day it will quickly become annoying and I will lose interest in the app. I don't really get what the value proposition is here... A timer (I have one in my phone) with a single audio file every time (there's hundreds of those on spotify with all kinds of sounds, narration and so on)... So why use Oak?
Sagiv Ofek
I don't get it. It's 207 and companies still release apps only for one platform (usually IOS). people, learn react-native!
Frederik Waller
Over the last couple of months, I have tried to get myself to stick to Headspace but could never convince myself to pay for it, as I find it too expensive. So, I'm really excited to test out a new alternative. So far, it looks great! Quick feedback: There's a spelling mistake on the 4th app store image ("Keep track of your progress with detailed analytics").
