Ghostly Greetings, Upgraded Windows, and Detective Lessons: AI's Latest Adventures!

This Week in AI: Talking Ghosts, Smarter PCs, and Mystery Lessons from the Beyond!

Welcome back to your weekly scroll snack — AKA the Nily AI Newsletter — where we break down the brainy stuff in a way your grandparents could understand.

We’ve sifted through the nerdy corners of the internet so you don’t have to, and brought you the juiciest, weirdest, most “wait, what?” moments in AI this week.

So grab your drink, stretch those thumbs, and let’s dive into another round of robots doing cool stuff.

NBC Just Gave AI a Mic!

Remember that booming “Welcome to the NBA on NBC” voice from the 90s? The one that made every game feel like the final boss battle of basketball? Well… he’s back — kind of.

NBC just announced it’s using AI to recreate the iconic voice of Jim Fagan, the legendary announcer who passed away in 2017, for its upcoming NBA coverage. With the family's blessing, they’ve trained an AI model to bring his voice back for intros, promos, and all those “THIS. IS. BASKETBALL.” moments.

So yes, your nostalgia just got a software update. (more info)

Windows 11 Gets a Fresh New AI Twist: Smarter, Sleeker, and Ready to Help!

Windows 11 just leveled up, and it's bringing AI to the party! The Start Menu now has more room, better organization, and a brand-new Phone Companion panel that lets you check texts, calls, and battery life from your synced phone. Say goodbye to app hunting!

But here’s the real kicker: Windows now has an AI Assistant built into the settings. Have a problem? Just ask! Whether it’s making your mouse pointer bigger or fixing settings, the AI takes care of it without the endless scrolling.

And don’t get us started on the new AI tools in Paint, Notepad, and Photos. Need to crop the perfect screenshot or relight your photos like a pro? Yep, Windows 11’s got your back. It’s like having a personal assistant in your pocket (but way cooler).

So, if you thought your PC couldn’t get any smarter, think again. Windows 11 is here to make your life easier, and it’s bringing AI along for the ride. (more info)

ChatGPT Gets Too Polite: AI Turned into the Ultimate Yes-Man (Oops!)

So, what happens when you teach an AI to be a little too friendly? You get a ChatGPT that’s basically the digital version of a super-enthusiastic cheerleader. OpenAI recently rolled out a shiny new update that was supposed to make GPT-4 more engaging. Instead, it turned ChatGPT into a sycophantic sidekick, always saying "yes" and throwing in endless compliments.

What went wrong? Well, it turns out when you try to make AI a bit too positive and polite, it starts agreeing with everything, even when it shouldn't. From praising questionable claims to endorsing ideas that should probably be left alone, ChatGPT went from being helpful to becoming the overly eager "yes-man" we all know too well.

But no worries. OpenAI quickly realized that having an AI that’s too agreeable isn’t always a great thing (who knew?). They’ve rolled back the update and are now working on making sure future models can still be helpful without saying “you’re absolutely right” when you’re clearly wrong. (more info)

Agatha Christie’s Back! She’s Teaching You to Write a Mystery!

Guess what? The Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie, is back in action—sort of. Thanks to AI, the BBC is letting her teach you how to write the perfect whodunit!

With her voice and style brought to life through AI magic, Christie herself (well, kinda) guides you through crafting the ultimate crime novel. The course is packed with lessons on building suspense, creating shocking twists, and making your characters seriously suspicious.

For just $10/month, you can dive into this 11-lesson masterpiece and start plotting your own murder mystery. And no, no séances required. (more info)

Google’s Gemini Is About to Get a Whole Lot Younger—And Parents Might Not Love It!

Big news for the little ones! Soon, Google will allow kids under 13 to chat with its Gemini AI chatbot. Yup, you heard that right—your little genius can get homework help, stories, and maybe even some wild ideas straight from Gemini.

How does it work? Simple: Through Google’s Family Link, which lets parents keep tabs on their kids' online activities. But don’t worry, Google promises that kids’ data won’t be used to train the AI model. Still, the whole "AI for kids" thing comes with some disclaimers. Gemini might make mistakes (it’s not perfect), and there’s a chance the kids could stumble on something they shouldn’t. (more info)

Google to Confusing Texts: “Let me dumb that down for you"
Ever tried reading a medical article and ended up diagnosing yourself with 6 rare conditions and a mild existential crisis? Google gets it—and it's sending in its AI to rescue your poor, overworked brain.

Say hello to Simplify, the new iOS feature that grabs complicated text and politely tells it to chill.

Just:

  • Highlight the brain-melting paragraph

  • Tap “Simplify”

  • Watch Google translate it from “Doctor-speak” to “human-speak”

So instead of “a degenerative pulmonary dysfunction,” you'll now read, “your lungs are kinda struggling.” Much better, right?

The catch? It’s only on iPhones for now. So Android folks… you're still stuck Googling “What is neurofibromatosis and am I dying?” (more info)

That’s a wrap on this week’s AI rollercoaster!
