Newsvoice crowdsources the latest news stories. You will always see different sources and perspectives from independent, international, and mainstream media. Having an open, unbiased, fact-based news platform has never been more important.
I've been steering away from the mainstream media since I've observed I was being served a political agenda instead of the actual facts of the events that go on in the world.
Newsvoice has been instrumental for me to keep up with the news by tagging them with the news outlet political affiliation. This enables me to start from an informed position when trying to get the facts from within the propaganda of the "news" piece.
I have hope that newsvoice will help wake the masses from the media biases, just by exposing different views of the same event.
What or who determines whether a news source is labelled as 'left', 'right' or 'centre' in the app? Are only US news sources labelled as such? Every news link I've seen in the app with those labels has been a US news source, while others from around the world are just labelled with "Canada", "Europe", "Asia" etc. – quite vague. (I might have expected The Guardian to be labelled as 'left' and The Daily Mail as 'right' in the UK).
In the spirit of news being open and available to all, why is it not possible to search news (only to browse the news feed) without first creating an account?
On the app itself, it feels a lot like an Android app on iOS, right down to the ripple effect tapping on news items and the two tab/navigation bars. It would be great if the system left edge swipe-to-go-back gesture was respected within the app. Glad there's system dark mode support though!
As there don't seem to be that many comments on most articles (and I prefer some Twitter/Reddit commentary), I've turned off 'Show comments', but this still shows a comment icon underneath each news item – would be useful if these and the 'write a comment' prompt were hidden too with this option.
Newsvoice Play also sounds very robotic – I wonder if using the iOS system text-to-speech voice (Siri's) might sound a lot more natural.
@iamsebj Great feedback! We have set the labels based on an aggregate of research from different sources. We are also working on improving the labelling, by adding more tags for international sources.
The limitation of the search is currently a technical issue. It's on the roadmap to fix this in the future, along with a better search function.
Left edge swipe is a planned feature too, along with making the app more iOS native.
We currently have over 1000 comments on Newsvoice every day. However, the largest part of our readers are based in the US and probably hasn't woken up yet. Great input on the visible commenting icon, we should probably hide that!
We've been trying out a lot of different automated voices, and the best we've found so far is Google's wavenet, which we are currently using. However, we hope to be able to use real voice actors in the future.
As I'm sure you understand, we are still a new app and working on all fronts to make it even better. :) Thanks again for the feedback and observations!
@utestme Hi Onutz, thanks for signing up. Unfortunately, we do not support sign in with Apple for the web yet (it's a planned feature in the near time). To get the premium access, you can sign out on your account page in the app and either sign in with Google or your phone number. Sorry about that!
I, like so many Americans have lost trust in the news media. This product puts us in control. Once we convince NV to remove the few "Fakenews" sources that have proved their need to lie repeatedly, and harm or right to Free Speech, this will be the place to come to get news you can trust.
Thank you for asking. kp
I would like to get the premium backer access. The question that I have is the instructions says to sign in either with Google or SMS. The third step says to sign into the App with the same login used from step 1. However, I am logged into the App already using my Apple ID. How does the PH users perk work in this situation?
@calum Thank you! The complete app is rebuilt from scratch since our original MVP release nearly 3 years ago. It's now a native app, we've added a comment section, introduced Newsvoice Play, which makes it possible to listen to the news, we've also added crowdsourced summaries to the stories. In addition, the app has a completely new design, editing functions are much improved and sources are more clearly labeled, we now have great tablet support, and have a completely new webapp (currently in alpha). And that's just a few of the things we've changed. :)
Hi product hunters,
I am Viktor and I started this project about 3 years ago. My life in Silicon Valley, where I was a senior software engineer for Google, showed me first hand that the way we create and consume news needs to change. Someone smart once said, “be the change you want to see”, so here I am, three years later, asking for your feedback.
At Newsvoice, we combine technology with our growing community to create an unbiased personal news feed, always showing multiple sources and perspectives. I used to be part of the team that created the Flutter framework, so that was a natural choice for building Newsvoice. It makes for a super smooth user experience and fast loading times.
Here is an outline of what the platform has evolved into:
- We aggregate news reports from major outlets, as well as international and independent media. Anyone in the community can contribute unbiased summaries.
- Every source is tagged with its political leaning, so you can easily spot biases in the news reporting.
- Anyone can write summaries, but they are always reviewed by professional journalists and moderators before being published in the app.
- Our news ranking system is similar to the one used by Reddit. It will arrange your news based on a combination of your interests, how new the stories are and the number of upvotes.
- One of our newest features is Newsvoice Play. It’s your very own personal news radio, and makes it possible for you to listen to your news mix anywhere anytime.
As a small thanks for checking out Newsvoice, we are currently handing out a free month of premium backer access, exclusively to the Product Hunt community. It includes unlimited access to Newsvoice Play, and a special backer badge. Activate it here: https://alpha.newsvoice.com/prod...
Let’s fix the news. Together.
I live in Europe. Will this app let me read the local news of my city & country, or is it only global/US-centered (i.e. limited to articles in English)?
@woubuc1 Hi Wouter, so far Newsvoice only processes articles in English. It might be a while before we start thinking about localizing in different languages.
Interesting idea, could be really cool if done properly. I wanted to check the bias factor, but I couldn't find any search box on the site. I think search is pretty important where I want to find articles on particular subject. Good luck!
@strzibnyj Thanks Josef! The limitation of the search is currently a technical issue. It's on the roadmap to fix this in the future, along with a better search function.
I'm a great fan of NewsVoice. It has completely changed how I consume the news. I now often find myself reading articles from news sources with a political view I would in the past never have read. It has broadened my views and helped me understand peoples opinions.
I recommend NewsVoice to all my friends and I hope it can help make the world a even better place.
@michael_davey_schmidt Your help is making a difference, Michael. Much gratitude for the cordial feedback. If you have ideas on how we can provide even more value - we'll happily listen:)
I've been using Newsvoice on my Android smartphone for a number of months now, & have found it's become one of several go-to apps I rely upon on a regular basis, unlike a multitude of others I've downloaded, tried, & discarded. I particularly like the clearly-indicated biases show next to articles & sources - this is something that should be best practice across the board, in my opinion, but that is clearly lacking from nearly every other news source I've tried. Newsvoice is really setting the precedent for how news should be delivered, in this era of misinformation. I recommend others try this app, if they're similarly interested in staying informed, without the spin. Kudos to the developers thus far!
The best app for news. Multiple sources to each news stories just lays bare their inherent biases. And the discussions thats accompany stories often adds some interesting perspective
