You know Netflix. You don’t know 103 different languages (unless your brain is HUGE). Mate for Netflix is now available on Safari. Instantly translate subtitles. Learn while you chill. Unlock foreign films. Watch the world.
Hey hunters! We're excited to ship the long-anticipated Mate x Netflix x Safari integration 🚀
Mate x Netflix first went live as a Chrome extension one year ago. We became #2 product of the day back then, press wrote about Mate all around the world – from USA to Germany to Vietnam to Turkey. But most importantly, Mate users loved the idea, too. This integration allowed us to further differentiate us from Google Translate, Apple Translate, and whatever all-purpose translator app you can think of.
We built Mate to serve a small niche – pro users & language learners. Both use translations at least a dozen times a day and such deep integrations save them tons of time.
Why didn't we release Safari together with Chrome a year ago? Safari extensions are built differently than those for Chrome/Firefox nowadays, they have a whole other API. We decided to test waters with Chrome because it was easier to build + bigger market. When we saw decent traction & a lot of excitement, we ported it to Safari. As an avid Safari user myself, I was craving for this day all this time, though!

Many of you have heard that macOS will have some of its own translation features starting with Big Sur. The very first logical question that may pop up in your head is "Why Mate then?" I'm glad to answer! First of all, Mate serves a slightly different target audience. Mate is different from Apple or Google Translate at its core.
We focused on a small niche of pro users & learners who live languages. Who translate so much that a simple double-click saves them hours every week as opposed to copy-pasting.
To name a few, here are things that Mate nails better:
* 103 languages instead of 12
* One-click translation of sentences and words on pages, not only full page
* Translate selected text in any Mac app, not only in Safari
* Uninterrupted writing flow – always available in the menu bar
* Phrasebook for saving vocabulary that you want to learn.
However, there are things that we proudly share with Apple:
* A firm stance on privacy
* Seamless full page translations in Safari
