I know it's not cool to use Windows anymore, but I do and it's really hard to find a decent desktop mail client. Thunderbird shows its age, and Outlook is really the only other option. After having Outlook wipe half my mail during a failed sync the other week, I went on a hunt and found Mailbird... and I'm pretty blown away. It's a MODERN mail client, built for the world we live in today.
The two key features of interest to me are:
- Unified mailbox: The inboxes for my 7 accounts optionally all appear in one place
- Calendar Integration - integrates with Google Calendar or Sunrise (I use Sunrise, so this is rad)
It also has a load of integration for things like Wunderlist, Asana, Dropbox, etc. All apps that I use in running my startup. It also has some gimmicky stuff like the option to tweet or share on facebook when you've reached "Inbox Zero", which is a nice touch. Pretty powerful support system that lets you see submitted product feature requests.
Generally a great product, though at 2.0 it's still growing (Can't move mail between folders on different accounts yet). I will be starting my transition away from Outlook over the Christmas break
Thank you for hunting this Ross! @rossdcurrie
As a fellow Windows user, I can relate to your situation. I've been looking for a replacement to Outlook. Tried Nylas N1 for some time, but didn't quite liked it. Will surely give this a try. :)
@akshaybharwani I knew I couldn't be the only one in the same boat - word must get out!! I literally lost all my PayPal payment notifications for the last year because of outlook not understanding how to create/sync remote folders properly
I think you'll like mailbird - the features it has are very sleek and the ones that are missing I get the impression aren't far behind.
@rossdcurrie I agree it's a great client and behaves more like an app than a clunky piece of old-school software. That is, it's fast. I moved from Thunderbird because of speed issues and Mailbird answered them.
@webbuzzau Yeah I still need a few 'basic' features like mail filters, or being able to move mail from one account to another... Generally a good piece of software with a few features sure to be on there way.
To put it in context - it's fine for me to use, but my dad asked what it was when he saw the default signature and I'm not ready to move him or my mom onto it yet.
@Mailbird After using mail bird for a few fays now, I noticed the mailbird does not label or categorize SOCIAL and Promotions categories like GMAIL/GAPPS does. Is there a way to get those social and promotion emails back into a filter?
@dielawn714 Hey Dylan! Yes that would be super nice to have that. We have a variety of sorting and filtering requests to include in Mailbird. Right now focusing on getting development done for the Import feature from Outlook and Thunderbird to Mailbird. Then a few others in the pipeline that have high priority, but we hope to bring some kind of nice sorting/filtering features in the near future :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Love it! Also happy new year to you too :)
Hi guys, VP of Growth for @Mailbird here. We are a globally distributed team, so I've asked our team to jump on here as they can.
First, thank you for hunting us @rossdcurrie :) My heart skipped a beat when I saw the first Product Hunt tag in our analytics this morning. You rock!
Love it or hate it, email is not going anywhere. Global stats show the average email user has 1.7 accounts, and it will reach 2 accounts in 4 years. Of these users, over 85% of them use Windows.
As Product Hunters, you would probably agree that the number of new tools and accounts the average person uses for things like scheduling, chatting, planning, note-taking, and social networks continues to grow as well.
That's why we created Mailbird. One beautiful, easy to use, client to help you stay on top of all your email accounts, social networks, productivity tools, and more.
With help from our awesome community of users, we are constantly updating and developing new features for Mailbird. In fact, we are set to release a new import feature in January that will make bringing your accounts, folders, messages, and more from other clients and webmail accounts even easier.
I could tell you all about Mailbird, but the easiest way to discover why over 500,000 people have used it is to give it a try yourself! We have a huge sale on running until this Sunday where you can get 50% off Mailbird Pro.
From the entire Mailbird team, have a Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
@growwithjason@bhavesh I just want to be able to drag and drop mail between accounts. I tend to start new ideas off as a mail alias, and then branch it off into its own account once it gets traction.
Also, a "check mail" button, with a pop up that has spinning wheels and a progress bar. I know mailbird checks constantly, but it's a psychological thing.
@rossdcurrie interesting idea about the drag drop. You can currently change the alias (account you are sending from) but I take it you mean even if you don't finish the email or want it in it's own folder? We've also had people ask for the "get email" button. Don't worry, I totally get you. I am the type of guy who keeps hitting the crosswalk button to make sure :) Typically, we look at what people are asking for and try to develop based around our users. If you have any more features you'd like included please describe them: https://mailbird.zendesk.com/for... we review these requests in all our development and planning
Windows is still the best Operating Systems out there. I think people like to use OS now because they were being " different" but not they are just sheep following the heard... I am gonna try mailbird out and see how it does.
Update: We just released a feature similar to Gmail's "undo send" that allows users to "unsend" any message from any account for up to 30 seconds after releasing it. This comes on the heels of our recent release of automatic account import - allowing new users to import their accounts, folders, messages, and more from existing clients like Outlook and Thunderbird!
ITS OFFICIALLY HERE! Over a year of arduous, tiring, long, hard work. You can get it...

Please share this one :) It would mean the world!
Mailbird is riddled with issues, it has nonsensical limitations like the impossibility to export emails in a format other than PDF (Is this a joke???) instead of following the industry standard .msg format in Windows. The company keeps pocketing loads and loads of revenues yet never listens to any feature request. Also, how is it that you can't search for something in your inbox, then delete the results in one go or move the results in a different folder? The reason is simple: Mailbird uses an obsolete database system. This feature was available in 1995 in Outlook. This is beyond baffling.
Hi guys! Yes, cannot wait for Import to be ready, hang in there :)
Thanks @Cedrik!
You will not be disappointed @Bhavesh.
Really looking forward to your feedback guys and also thanks for hunting Mailbird @Ross - thats awesome.
Also, we are aggressively working on improvements, so Mailbird will definitely continue to get better and better each day you use it. We are super excited about that and why so many people are loving working with a software that is constantly innovating and optimizing the experience.
Let me know if you guys have questions! Otherwise enjoy and hope you take advantage of the super Christmas promo we are doing for Mailbird Pro accounts :)
For the holidays you can even gift wrap your Mailbird with either Star Wars or Holiday themes. Snowflake theme is definitely a hit right now.
Best wishes, happy holidays and wishing you all the most amazing year in 2016.
@Ross I'm so with you there on drag and drop! Also try the Quick Compose feature, its awesome for occasions when you are browsing something and you remember that you need to shoot something off to someone. Even when Mailbird is not active just use a Quick Compose shortcut from the Options menu to pop up a new Window to compose and send an email.
Yeah @Bhavesh! Love that :) We promise not to let you down as we continue to aggressively improve and optimize the software.
Its awesome to see that Mailbird has been hunted! We really look forward to engaging with you guys on a long term basis, be a major part of building the most badass email/communication management suite for Windows users.
We are always looking for alpha testers too to try the latest features before they are launched into the public. You get to try all the latest developments and features before anyone else does, and well....essentially break Mailbird so we can be sure to fix it asap. The true job of a kick ass alpha tester....to break $@#% up ;)
P.S. we are running a Christmas Promo for those of you who want Pro/Lifetime for 1/2 off today.
Hoping you all have a wonderful holiday! And lets keep this conversation going. So many cool things to come of it.
Hey Ross and all those Mailbird fans out there! Andrea from Mailbird here ;) Mark Tuesday April 25th on your calendar....its the biggest request from email users worldwide.
On Tuesday April 25th, contacts sync will be here, unifying all the most important people in your life. It's baked right into Mailbird. Awesome stuff. Would love for the PH community to jump on it and try it.
2017 is a big year - think Mailbird on cross platform :D Shhhh. That's all I'll say for now.
I've been using Nylas for my email on Windows for a while, but this looks like an amazing alternative. I think it might replace Nylas, although it was very good. MailBird is just full of features that no other mail client actually offers. :)
@niju_david it crashes because it uses an insane amount of RAM. And they won't do a thing about it. It's normal, when you write code for the Microsoft platform, you are bound to end up with bloatware.
