💡 Bright idea
As a fellow open-source startup founder, I can say that Lotus is a fantastic addition to the open-source ecosystem. Its pricing and billing engine is incredibly versatile and can be used by businesses of any model. The real-time system allows for easy optimization, testing, and deployment of pricing, and the streamlined metering, entitlements, and invoicing are a huge plus. I am impressed by the work that Mikael, Diego, and the whole team have put into this project, and I do not doubt that it will be a valuable asset for any business that uses it. Keep up the good work, guys! And keep pushing the boundaries of what open source can do!

@sewell_stephens Hey Sewell. For a very early stage startup or sometime of that scale Stripe Links are probably best! But when you start to scale, managing + remembering how to compute the invoice for customers who are on different unique plans with usage can get complicated. Our primary goal is to make it as easy as changing your pricing in our dashboard and everything updates seamlessly, no need to go into the code, no need to manually compute/generate/send any invoices.

Oh wow! First of all, Congratulations @mikael_nida for creating such a fantastic product that can compete with established giants like Chargebee. I couldn't believe that Lotus is open-sourced and is so easy to deploy. The platform has quite a user-friendly interface and provides the flexibility to make any customizations needed to fit one's specific needs. This level of flexibility is not often seen in other closed-source pricing and billing software and this is where Lotus stands out. Overall, it is quite a strong contender in the market and definitely going to become part of my product roadmap.
Mikael Nida
@ug911 Thanks for the shoutout Utkarsh! This flexibility is exactly what we were going for. Really glad you enjoyed playing around with it and looking forward to seeing you integrate it!
Steven Hylands
Interesting! Could you use this to replace Stripe Billing for a business using Stripe Connect to provide Stripe services to many customers? Thanks!
Jerry
Open-source FTW! Congrats on the launch! I love how Lotus is doing, having both self-hose and cloud versions! Do you guys consider any form of collaboration? ILLA is a low-code open-source platform, we are trying to partner with as many open-source projects as possible to give our users a better experience! pricing&billing is a must-to-have function! Let me know if you are interested!

This looks incredible; pretty sure we are watching a unicorn in the making. :) Congrats on the launch!
Michelle Dear
Very interesting - curious if it works for mobile app subscriptions managed through Apple? Congrats on the launch!
Mikael Nida
@michelledearxox Not yet but would be interested to hear more about that side of the space. Is this a challenge for you with your mobile subscriptions?

💎 Pixel perfection
We were an early customer and are excited about where this is going. There is a lot to digest regarding SaaS billing, and it was refreshing to find a team focused on solving technical problems with an open-source mindset. They also were able to offer hands-on guidance on billing decisions that (sometimes much larger) alternatives lack. Excited to see the team go.
Mikael Nida
@peter_mangan Great to see your support here Peter! Excited to continue to work with you and the Promptloop team.

Stumbled upon lotus a few weeks ago on hacker news. How do you guys differentiate from https://www.getlago.com?
Mikael Nida
@azhar Hey, we have a few large ways we differentiate including: entitlements (packaging), more flexible pricing experimentation and customization, realtime alerts, price caps, and some more integrations including Salesforce and Snowflake. We're also mostly in python, have an MIT license and are coming at this problem as a data optimization problem with some cool pricing ideas on the horizon.

Thia is interesting. So when and at what stage you would suggest Lotus could be used/helpful the most? Beta launch with waiting list or it doesn't matter?
Mikael Nida
@amirhouieh At any stage where you want to charge customers honestly. It gets more and more useful as you grow, with our target customers for paid version being larger startups.

Hey Product Hunt! Diego and I are the founders of Lotus, an open-source pricing, packaging, and billing engine that powers usage-based, per-seat, and bespoke enterprise plan pricing. We’ve built a real-time system that helps AI, SaaS, and Fintech companies convert product usage → revenue. Monetization and pricing are core aspects of every business that is often overlooked. We built Lotus to give product managers and rev-ops the tools to treat pricing as product and experiment with custom usage metrics. To give Lotus a test, head over to our GitHub repo, give us a star (https://github.com/uselotus/lotus), and then either follow the directions in the README to self-host or try out our cloud demo. Lotus covers the billing process from 1. Usage Metering 2. Rating and Aggregation into Metrics 3. Plan/Product Catalog -Version Control -Entitlements -Grandfathering 4. Subscription Management 5. Invoice Generation 6. Pricing Experimentation + Analytics Lotus empowers developers to focus on their product's core value add, which almost certainly isn’t billing while giving them the flexibility to customize and add whatever custom logic their use case needs. With extensibility in mind, we’ve adopted a full MIT license for all of our code so anyone can fork our repo and self-host our system for **free** ([https://docs.uselotus.io/overvie...). If you’re interested in our Cloud offering or a support license, book a demo uselotus.io or contact us at founders@uselotus.io Happy developing, and send a star if you enjoy the project!
Markus Sigel
@mikael_nida Really cool. Do I understand correctly that you are a mix of Stripe and Chargebee?
Mikael Nida
@markus_sigel Definitely, however we don't handle payments at all so you have to connect your Stripe or another payment gateway to Lotus in order to issue payments for the invoices. We are really trying to innovate on helping teams figure out how to best price their product and then make it super easy for them to execute on that plan!

@mikael_nida Congratulations on the bold launch with GitHub page and Readme as the landing site. Stands true to the claim of being open source and developer focussed.
