Ledger Nano S is a Bitcoin, Ethereum and Altcoins hardware wallet, based on robust safety features for storing cryptographic assets and securing digital payments
Quick question here. I have purchased one for myself but just got this paranoid thought: how do we know that the software which is sort of pre-installed on the flash drive is 100% secure? Is there a guarantee that when I plug it into my computer in 5 years there wouldn't be a "hidden" automatic transaction which transfers my coins somewhere else? That might sound nooby, but I want to protect my money not just from hackers, but from Ledger makers as well. Let me know what you guys think...
@akimovnv According to the Ledger site (https://www.ledgerwallet.com/pro...), the initialization is done locally, and requires pressing hardware buttons to activate. While I'm sure there's at least a small degree of trust you're giving Ledger, I'd assume they have more to lose than gain by creating a backdoor. I'd also recommend treating it like a hot wallet - keep your primary store in a cold wallet (ledger makes a neat one: https://www.ledgerwallet.com/pro...), and transfer only the amount you need to spend to your (easily losable or stealable) thumb wallet.
Absolute must-have if you’re investing in cryptocurrency. Your assets aren’t explicitly safe unless you hold the private key yourself. Even better if it’s on hardware like the Nano.
When I first bought bitcoin, I kept an eye on how best to secure my investment and any future investments I decide to make.
I kept hearing about the Ledger Nano S and decided my investment was worth approx €75.
The Ledger basically adds a secondary security layer on what is pretty much a secure USB for cryptocurrency.
The product has given me a great level of security for a small price. Even if the Ledger Nano S decides to wander off, my coins won't be lost, as I can just purchase a new Ledger wallet and put my coins in the new wallet by using the Chrome plugin. Easy :).
You get a unique set of 24 words and have to enter 4-8 character passcode, so as long as you have those, you'll be fine.
Highly recommend.
Pros:
• High level of security;
• Easy to setup and use on any desktop computer;
• Affordable (cheapest hardware wallet with a screen);
Hey Fahim. I just got mine this past week as well. Great device at a decent price. In regards to the lack of passphrase support, it actually does have it. Just navigate to the settings menu and you can add a passphrase from there. I've added it for an additional level of security.

One note on these: The amazon links are all back-ordered and don't exactly look the most trustworthy. Also, their prices are way higher than US based distributors. Ledger themselves will cost you over $100 due to shipping from france, but I've recently ordered from All Things Decentral: https://allthingsdecentral.com/p... - they're also sold out at the moment, but they seem like the cheapest & most trustworthy US-based distributor I could find.
I love my Ledger Nano S. In total, I have 2 and gift these to friends from time to time!
I haven't used other hardware wallets, but I can say that Ledger is easy to use, it has a sturdy build, and their support is pretty good. They cover ERC20 tokens and the major cryptocurrencies as well, so no problem for me.
