@bentossell Nice discovery Ben. VLC is pretty much the standard in this field, but macOS sure can use a dedicated modern media player.
Ben Tossell
@t55 yeah VLC has always been my default - found this in GitHub Explore > Trending section :)

@bentossell @t55 So Look ok, i also use VLC for like...ages, i would like to use something different just for the hell of it!

I'm sceptical. I'm waiting for a good developer to look in the source code and confirm there is no malicious code.
Simon Bromberg
@sidrock28 The project is totally open source. Hiding malicious code in plain sight would be some pretty ace-level scamming, although I suppose it's theoretically possible. In my experience sketchy things look sketchy.

@sidrock28 Why, though?

@shimmb @sidrock28 The website also offers a bundled app binary. It's not as unlikely or uncommon as you're leading others to believe.

Missing a couple things here and there functionality-wise relative to VLC, but IINA a beautiful video player which, if nothing else, is a bit cleaner and easier to use than VLC. Is the name "IINA" supposed to be read as "tuna" ? #2much2na

Looks good - will definitely try it out. My biggest peeve when I made the switch from windows to mac was that I couldn't use KMPlayer anymore! Easily the best media player on windows. One of the best features was the ability to create 'bookmarks' wherever you are up to in the video and then resume without having to open the file but simply open KMPlayer and click on the bookmark you save. Once a media player has that on mac (hopefully there's one out there already that I don't know of!) I'll be switching from VLC!
Adriel Kloppenburg
@itsharisq VLC as well as MPlayerX both already do this automatically. So if you close a video file half way through, then open the same file a few days later it will resume where you left off. Isn't this what you want? Edit: nevermind, read your comment wrong.

Touch Bar support is not a big deal. What is interesting, what benefits brings the development using Swift in this particular case?
Fraser Smith
Pretty nice, but still seems a bit alpha. Not disabling the screensaver is a bit of a problem. :-) I'll be keeping my eye on it though.
Fraser Smith
I did keep my eye on it and it has been my go-to video player for most of the year since it was hunted. Recently I've started to use it for music playback too.

Be sure to use the Chrome or Safari extension for maximum usefulness: Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/websto... Safari: https://github.com/lhc70000/iina...

Great find! I've thought for a while VLC seemed a bit outdated for the modern platform, and this instantly looks like a worthy long term replacement. The design is great and it really suits macOS.
Christopher Hannah
Of course I had to link to it from my blog - http://radicalthinker.net/iina-t...

This is pretty great. It's not just good looking, it can play smoothy very-high bitrate 4K that even VLC has trouble playing.

Going to definitely be testing immensely as I always watch videos of all formats on my Mac. I've always been looking for a modern solution for an all media type player but haven't found a capable one yet. Let's see if this pulls me away from VLC and Mplayer OSX Extended. From initial usage, I can say that it's very fast, love the UI and how clean it is. My only gripe so far is the way my scrubbing works with my trackpad. When I two finger drag left...it moves the video forward and vice-versa. This motion is very weird to me and would like some way to switch that so when I swipe to the right, it moves the video forwards and not backward.

Best macOS player ๐Ÿ™Œ

Pros:

It's like QuickTime but so much better. Supports many more file types.

Cons:

No automatic updates

What are some of the benefits to using this over VLC? Is it just a slicker UX?
Daniel MacLean
Great! Finally, I have an M1 and VLC doesn't Rosseta. This one does and I hope they will have a silicon version pretty soon. Great work friends!

How does it compare to VLC in regard to battery usage? VLC is just a battery hog.
Zach Sekar
VLC gets the job done but I'm definitely keeping my eye on this project now.

i like it very much there is a lack of good players for macOS and this one could have bright future.

It's nice, but it doesn't prevent my iMac going to sleep mode while playing movie.
