IBM z17, the new mainframe built for AI. Features Telum II processor & upcoming Spyre accelerator for on-prem inference, GenAI, and agentic AI with high security & availability.
Hi everyone!
IBM just announced the z17, their newest mainframe, built specifically for the AI era. The core idea is bringing powerful AI capabilities directly to the secure environment where critical enterprise data often lives.
It features new built-in AI acceleration designed to make AI run extremely fast within core business tasks, like real-time transaction analysis. They're also adding an optional, powerful accelerator card (called Spyre, coming Q4 '25) specifically for running demanding generative AI and agentic AI workloads directly on the mainframe.
Beyond the main AI upgrades, IBM is also highlighting AI-powered security features, quantum-safe readiness, and the extreme reliability mainframes are known for.
The IBM z17 becomes generally available on June 8th. It's a significant move to integrate modern AI deeply into these powerful, secure enterprise systems.
