👋 Hi from Hex CEO – what do you want to see next?

We're releasing many of our most-requested features this month, and I'd love your input on what you want to see next and what we can be doing better!

Hi Barry, thanks for starting this thread.

First, we really like Hex. It is a strong product and our team gets a lot of value from it. Kudos to you and the team for what you have built.

One area I would love to see expanded is Magic, to make it a more self-service tool.

When I look at products like PostHog Max or Vercel’s v0, one thing they do well is let users work directly with prompts to create and refine projects, set up integrations, and build on what they have already done, without needing a specialist.

As a semi-technical founder with a product background, I find Hex dashboards great for sharing and viewing. But when it comes to creating new dashboards or connecting new data services, I usually need someone technical to jump in. It still feels a little complex to work with on my own.

It would be great if Magic could make that easier. Not just for querying data, but for setting up projects, connecting services, and making suggestions through a chat-style interface. Ideally, I could build and manage Hex projects just by interacting with Magic.

After spending almost a year working with multiple specialists to organize our data, I know how challenging analytics can be. There is a real opportunity to reduce that friction by making it easier to handle through simple prompts.

@kylemhudson thank you! There is truly no higher priority for us right now! I'd love to connect you with our Magic team to see some of the latest they're doing, and see if you'd be keen to get early access. I'll reach out on email.

@barrald Amazing, I would love that. Looking forward to connecting.

@kylemhudson +1 on expanded Magic! I'm a former data scientist whose SQL is rusty, and Magic has been key for helping me be self-sufficient with data. Not infrequently, though, I run into issues where Magic's changes have errors, or don't quite get me what I want, and I need to use a different LLM (which probably doesn't have a lot of context on our data / database).

Also I feel Magic could be more knowledgeable about our data, but maybe I haven't battle-tested it enough to understand what it can and can't do.

I wonder if an agentic loop would be better here, since we see it being successful with code, though...a big difference between code and data work is that it's often hard to verify data work.

Wonder if @oliviakoshy has thoughts - it was good to see you at the Anthropic agents meetup!

Barry McCardel

@kylemhudson  @oliviakoshy  @rajiv_ayyangar 100% – this is our main focus right now, honestly – much more coming soon!

I'd like a way to connect Hex dashboard data to external sources to set up automations (Zapier, Webhook, etc.).

I have a few dashboards that I interact with weekly that involve downloading the data, cleaning it, importing it into other services etc. The other services all are on Zapier or have API/Webhook interfaces. It'd be cool to connect Hex in that way, too.

Barry McCardel

@steveb interesting – so you'd want to push from Hex to those other sources?

steve beyatte

@barrald Yep, ideally on a schedule or alternatively let me poll from other services or hit a webhook.

@barry On the smaller side of a feature request, but this permissions request is high on my list: https://www.producthunt.com/p/hex/can-i-set-the-default-project-sharing-permissions-to-share-new-projects-to-my-company

For a small company like ours, dashboards are public (internally, that is) by default. I typically forget to change the permissions on new projects and get a flurry of "don't have access" Slack messages after sending out a link.

Hey @barrald 👋 This is a super small nitpick, but I've always found the button to remove a chart from a dashboard super confusing and hard to find. I've also had to help several others find it so I think it's likely something others are facing too. I think updating the blocks icon to an X or a 🗑️ icon would be really helpful.

Outside of that incredibly small thing haha, I think the only other thing I'd love to see is the ability to add some rules for Magic similar to how Cursor and Windsurf allow you to. I'd love to have it match my styling and just have some general guidelines for it. I think it'd really help reduce the amount of editing and tweaking I typically do after prompting.

Barry McCardel

@jakecrump I don't disagree on the icons front... good reminder.

Rules for Magic – stay tuned! More soon.
