This is fun: take a selfie, see which historical artwork you resemble!

@chrismessina Not available in US. Where, precisely, is it available?
Nick Abouzeid
Either way, this app is fun: either you find your identical twin from centuries ago, or Google's algorithm finds your next (absolutely terrifying) Halloween costume. šŸ‘» Even celebrities from our favorite shows and brands are getting in on the action. šŸ‘€šŸ˜‚

Alright. One question though. Google discriminating countries and regions from their products, is it for fun, or there is truly a reason to do that ? Because I don't understand.
Wesley Forlines
@thilawfab I have really no idea for sure, but Iā€™m wondering if it stems from rights agreements with the museums, which have works indexed in the app. Iā€™m guessing (hoping) surely this will change in the future, itā€™s not really Googleā€™s brand to withhold public information.
Scott
@thilawfab it's probably around laws for facial recognition. It's not enabled for some countries for Google photos too.
Julien Ricard
@thilawfab I would answer that they always do that on the search also. Lucky (or not) users get the new version while others wait

The selfie comparison feature uses computer vision to compare you to portraits in museum galleries. Quite the hook to get you to explore the other areas of the app!
Jeff Osborn
I like all aspects of this, not just the selfie feature. Lots included to help people explore and learn.

Why is there such a rush with the app's release?! If you have not finished the app or have not made the functionality fully available for users from most of the countries, why you let it go live? I just do not understand *frustrated*
Brenton House

WHY would you remove features for people that live in certain US States!?!!

Pros:

none

Cons:

features not available

# TOBI #
When will this selfie feature be available in Europe or Germany to be more precise? Does anyone know? Can't wait to try it.
Kartik Iyer
Oh I so wish the selfie feature were available in India. I was speculating that my selfie would match with the scream. How would I ever know now?! šŸ˜±

I live in Austin, TX, which apparently is not worthy of the selfie feature.

Pros:

none

Cons:

The selfie feature is location based

John Ellis
Same here outside of DFW area. I thought I was losing my mind. My Instagram feed was showing so many of these that I caved and downloaded the app, but could not for the life of me find anything related to this feature.
Katy Le

I don't know why your cool features just for some country. I just downloaded. And now I must be delete with bad feeling

Pros:

Nice app, clean and well organised. It is very friendly, menu on sidebar like gmail.

Cons:

Features is not available in my country so I didn't do anything

Yarin Lidor

I don't understand what is so special about this app, recycling google database with another app and the main feature (why I tapped Install) is not working...

Pros:

Take a selfie and see which historical artwork you resemble

Cons:

Blocked for 90% of the countries.

Jason Bunnell

Are they discriminating based on region or OS?

Pros:

Not sure. Interesting use of AI.

Cons:

not available

Uzoma Bailey Ayogu
Pretty smart way to get an insane amount more data on peoples faces and continue to train their systems w/o any push back. #Genius

A widely publicised feature, where you can submit a selfie and have it matched to a person in an artwork doesn't seem to be available in many places, including the US and UK. Was it a trick to get people to download the app, the cynic inside me asks?

Pros:

well organised, but curated for an american audience

Cons:

Advertised and promoted features not available in most locations

Molly Huang
Agree. If the feature is only available in the US as they published, they should make it clear that a lot of people may not find this after downloading.
Accomplice

You would hope that Google had realised that when launching software you're usually doing it to an international audience...

Pros:

Nice idea for a one stop shop for arts and culture

Cons:

Killer feature selfieXartwork match does not work outside of US or 98% of the world

Mai Van Vu

i didn't feel compelled to explore the actually arts & culture, was more focused on taking a selfie.

Pros:

fun for 1 day of sharing selfies with friends

Cons:

the app didn't excite me

Mary Lom
I just found the app yesterday, but it is awesome! If you need a collection of arts with easy acсess, you should try it. It is perfect, when you read a book about art and you want to see a paintingšŸ–¼
Yarin Lidor
Why all the buzz about the selfie feature and it is blocked for 90% of the world?!
cn
Should have been in the description that this is only available in the US :(
