I just bought patron.com by flying across the country to meet the owner in person

After my AI startup (trieve) got acquired, I returned to an old idea: building a better Patreon for content creators making serial content like long running comics, shows, or books. The domain patron.com was perfect, but it was owned by World Media as an investment. Instead of assuming it was impossible, I cold emailed the owner Gary Millin through LinkedIn and regular outreach.
Here's the thing about premium domains: it's rarely just about money. Domain holders want to see their asset put to good use. When Gary finally replied, I didn't try to negotiate over email. I booked a flight to New Jersey, met him in person, and presented a detailed 100-day plan for what I wanted to build.
We landed on founder-friendly terms where I got rights to use the domain without cash upfront on a perpetual lease where charges only start on year 3. Essentially, Gary became an investor in the vision rather than just selling a domain. A couple weeks later, the domain was transferred.
The whole experience reminded me that action beats analysis paralysis. While others might research domain acquisition strategies for months, sometimes you just need to send an email, book a flight, and have an honest conversation. If you have an idea, try it. There are probably fewer blockers than you think.

Wow, what an amazing story!
It's so inspiring. There's a domain I've really wanted that's personally owned by an IT professor, and hearing your story makes me feel like I should finally reach out and make an attempt.

@shawn_park_f12 do it!
Oy, nice get — but really curious how you're going to defend yourself again Bacardi's army of lawyers!
Drink up! 🍸

@chrismessina I'm more worried about Patreon than them! Ironically I directly went Patron tequila against them negotiating for the domain.
@skeptrune salud! 😅
@skeptrune Have you talked to a trademark attorney? I just checked Patreon's trademark on USPTO and it reads...
Class 035
100 101 102.
G & S: IC 035: Advertising and promotional services; Advertising, including promotion of content creators seeking crowdfunding.
Patreon is going to protect their mark, and it's going to be painful day for you. Not a lawyer, but have consulted with a trademark attorney on a similar issue, and you'll likely have a forced rebrand at a minimum if Patreon has their legal ducks in a row. A vowel is not enough to differentiate two marks in the same field and is likely to cause customer confusion.
Cool domain, use it for another project!
