Has anyone tried marketing to students? Things that worked?
I'll be launching a product soon and students line up really well with our target persona, so naturally I'd like to reach as many as possible.
Do you have any ideas or general advice for marketing to students? Have you done anything that worked or didn't work?

Depends on the product - but flyers work well on college campuses - as for other forms of marketing, students are young, use TikTok

I agree it depends on the product. Would knowing that our product is an automated planner app change your answer though? I'd guess not but what do you think?
@lucas_barnes The UGC route for productivity/studying influencers could be promising. I see lots of TikTokers post videos in the area of note taking strats / "school optimization"
Students tend to move with the trends so be sure you are not looking "uncool" in any of your campaigns. Also, they like authenticity and anything that's a hint to be an outlaw.
If you're targeting students less than 15 age, then actually your target is their parents. If you're directly selling to students, then you have to speak their language(content).
It depends what you're marketing to students. Since you mentioned students rather than an age group, I'm just going to assume they all go to school.
As a student currently at university, some of my pain points are:
- Profs posting on different platforms rather than having everything on one platform, so I sometimes risk missing deadlines or have to click through a bunch of garbage to see where they posted.
- Organizing my notes. I use Google drive for now, and the main benefit it gives me is that it's easy to share and use, but it's not very good at making specific types of notes or implementing drawings
- The fact that some profs refuse to post their lecture slides or notes, so I end up taking pictures of their slides in class. It is annoying to transfer these images to drive, and they don't always size nicely.
- Missing small deadlines or events in general. I am usually aware of large deadlines, but it is easy to miss small ones. For example, if I don't keep track of time, I sometimes come to class late
- Prof's notes/lectures containing so much useless information and needing to parse through the chaff to get to the informative stuff
From my friends, these all seem to be similar pain points. If you can address those in your marketing, then I think that would be great.
If you're marketing to highschool students, then from my experience, the same things apply except for the second last one, just to a lesser degree.
@richard_gao2 thanks for your detailed comment! I definitely felt those same pain points. And yeah I could have been more specific, I was thinking mostly about college students, but it could work for highschool students too.
My product has to do with automated task management/planning and would definitely help with the "missing small deadlines or events" point.

I would recommend creating a campus ambassador program. Find a popular kid with a good following online/offline. If you convince them to try out your product, it would be easier to convince others.
There are a few startups that help with creating such a program. A quick search should be helpful. Else you can use hiring platforms to get started.
@umutgunbak Thanks for the reply! What would "collaborating with student-based organizations" look like? Have you seen any such collabs that stuck out to you? I mean I love the idea but not quite sure how I'd go about doing that.
