with designers I always like to obviously ask for their portfolio and past work- if I like what I see I always ask for a mockup of 1 page, or a specific section.
I talked to almost 2 dozen designers for the current design we're using. so many with good or decent portfolios just didn't have the right vision when they did the mockup.
always use detailed contracts. go over deposit and terms, if you don't want them sharing what their working on make sure to add an NDA. so much can be done with a contract to protect you, your project, and the freelancer
From my experience:
- Revision rounds and fixes should be determined upfront
- Carefully review their portfolio
- Meet with a few freelancers first (to get a sense of pricing and other workflows)
- Consult a former client before starting a project to get their feedback on the designer
- Be as detailed as possible in your brief, it's never too much
- Create a mockup of how the project should look
- Include as many inspirations as possible
- Establish a clear deadline
- Schedule weekly sync meetings and be involved along the way
Good luck!
