Are We Finally Ready to Share More and Own Less?

We’ve seen it with music (Spotify), movies (Netflix), and even cars (Uber). But what about everything else — drills, strollers, suitcases, waffle makers?

I’m Mikhail, founder of Givgive, a platform for local sharing and smart asset management. Our idea is simple: what if you could turn your unused stuff into income, or access everything you need by subscription — from your neighborhood?

Do you believe people are ready to stop owning and start sharing real physical goods?

What are the barriers — trust, logistics, habits?

Would love to hear how others see the future of ownership.

Let’s discuss.

I think it would help us to make less waste, but dunno, these things are becoming more accessible in terms of price.

More pricy things like apartments and cars are better to rent since, in addition to the purchase, their maintenance is very difficult in the long term.

Anyway, I support idea of swaping :)

@busmark_w_nika Thanks, Nika! Totally agree — high-ticket items like cars or apartments are already widely rented, and it makes sense due to their cost and complexity.

What we’re exploring with Givgive is: can the same logic apply to everyday things — like tools, baby gear, party equipment?

If we swap or rent these things locally, we not only reduce waste, but also build more connected communities.

Curious — would you ever rent or lend things like a waffle maker or a projector to/from your neighbors?

@crazystartuper The thing is, many people ask me for help, and I help in most cases. But I am not the one who receives the help so much. :D

@busmark_w_nika That's such a kind and generous way to live, Nika - helping others even when you don't always receive the same in return.

Maybe that’s the exact spirit we need more of in local sharing communities: not just fair exchange, but people who care.

If one day you do need help - I hope the right people will be there for you too.

And if there's ever anything I can support you with, don’t hesitate to reach out. :)

@crazystartuper That's so kind of you, Michael! :) Likewise.

Gen Z might not own anything in the future (slightly exaggerated but true). It’s clear that the way we think.

Are people ready to start sharing? I think many are, especially as convenience and efficiency become top priorities. But the transition isn’t always easy. Barriers: Trust, Logistics (while we're really talking about suitcases and strollers), and Habits.
People want to know that shared or rented items are reliable and well taken care of. Making pickup, drop-off, and maintenance seamless is key - otherwise, the convenience factor disappears.

And finally, old habits die hard, and subscription fatigue is real. But for items we rarely use, the benefits of sharing or subscribing can outweigh the hassle of ownership.

In my opinion, we’re heading towards a hybrid model. Some things we’ll always want to own, but for everything else, sharing and subscription models are likely to become the norm.

@sanskarix Thanks, Sanskar - really thoughtful response!

Totally agree: trust, logistics, and habit shifts are the big hurdles. We’re trying to tackle exactly that with Givgive - a local sharing platform where neighbors can rent or lend things like suitcases, tools, or strollers safely and easily.

The goal is to make sharing feel just as convenient (and trustworthy) as ownership-but with more meaning.
