FontBase is a lightning fast, beautiful and free font manager for designers. FontBase gives you all the stability, speed and reliability of a paid font manager, but free and on all platforms!
Hi all!
We have just released a big update for our free font manager.
We have completely rewritten the core engine from the ground up. Now FontBase works much faster and stable and it also supports Mac and Linux! Some of the updates include:
- Font activation
- Nested folders support
- Improved collections management
- Automatic sync
- Huge performance improvements
- Updated UI
- Updated website
You can read about all the changes here: http://fontba.se/updates
I will be glad to answer any questions you have!
This font manager looks great ๐. I will download it once I'm on my PC. One thing I noticed was that on mobile there isn't a single image of how the font manager looks like - only when I hit (request desktop site.) I know this product is meant to be used on a desktop but lots of people visit from a mobile first.
Can't detect system fonts or active fonts. Fonts must be copied manually into folder. Errors since last update. Ghosty email support, otherwise Facebook for support - ie, no ticket system or other structured customer support. Cannot figure out how to login and cancel account.
2 days ago I wrote to Fontbase that I wanted to cancel my service because the product is not what I need - I got no response and instead my credit card was charged. I call BS. Maybe even fraud? They said I could cancel at any time but when I want to cancel they ignore me. So I will be forwarding my correspondence to Visa and asking them to reverse the charges, flag for erroneous use.
Pros:
Looks nice
Cons:
Can't detect system fonts. Bad customer support. Charges to credit card after account cancellation
All the issues I've found so far:
1. Only system fonts appear in the app, not the fonts I installed.
2. In previous versions, all opentype features could be modified. Why have you changed that?
3. For some reason, I cannot drag-n-drop fonts inside collections.
4. The app looks horrible in retina displays.
Features I'd like to see:
1. Fonts ordered alphabetically.
2. The font weight next to font's name (e.g. Helvetica - Bold)
3. Google Fonts and/or Typekit sync.
Other than that, really great product ๐ Looking forward to new updates.
@desinil Hey, some of the features are still missing in this version, because we need a bit more time to implement them with our new engine. The retina problem is now also a known issue, we are going to fix that as soon as possible.
Regarding the drag-n-drop: you need to select the fonts by holding Shift and clicking on them. This is not obvious enough, I agree :(
Thank you for your feedback!
On Win 10 -at least on my PC- scale seems quite wrong. I mean the app itself looks very small comparing everything, I need a magnifier to work.
Alphabetical sort would be nice
I've a fonts folder that I've not installed to system yet, it'd be nice to see certain folders, not just system fonts.
@kiwison You need to add the folders to the app manually. It looks automatically only for system fonts.
We are working on the resolution fix for Windows and also on the sorting. The update will be out next week.
@sarperdag Only the system fonts are discovered automatically, it's intentional. You need to add your folders with fonts manually by drag-n-dropping them.
Nice - I've been looking for a Linotype replacement ever since it fried years of collections files.
Suggestion: Need some kind of onboarding guide (or a few simple prompts) for those transitioning from other font managers. (Example: "Fontbase will only show system fonts by default. To manage your other fonts in Fontbase, simply drag-and-drop their folders into Fontbase's window to import them. This won't move the original font files; it'll only create a copy.")
@dominiklevitsky I just wanted to say that you did a great job with this app! It's exactly the simple font-manager I've been looking for. I know there are more features to add and kinks to work out, but this is already a great piece of software and I look forward to seeing where you take it in the future! Way to go!
Hi, I have installed on windows, and its a great product, using it very frequently. But it is too much buggy at this point. Fonts preview won't work at most times. Uploading and syncing font is just a blindshot. surely a must have product for designers if all these issues are ironed out.
@looksawesome Font activation means, you can make a font available to all your apps, without installing it. And when, you close FontBase, it is de-activated. And when you open FontBase again, it is activated, again.
You can put your fonts in a Dropbox folder, for example. And then add that folder to FontBase. You can share this way.
Like it so far. It would also be nice to import a collection from the native Mac font app. I have some collections there and do not want to add 50+ fonts manually ๐
