Failory is a community where failed startup owners come to tell their failure stories and the mistakes they committed, so that future entrepreneurs can learn from them and donβt make the same errors.
I'm not a fan of this kind of "learn from failure" stories because you can't actually learn anything practical. Not even founders know exactly why they failed, they just assume and sometimes they get to wrong conclusions. For example the Addressbin story... the reason for failure is stated as "nobody wanted an easy way to grab emails". Wrong! Drip, ConvertKit and many others do the same thing and they bootstrapped, so people want that...the issue was that the founder lack of motivation, funds and knowledge to market a product in a competitive space. This is usual on tech founders who love to write code(like me) and when it comes to marketing, things get rough.
@virgilci Hi Cioaca. I totally understand what you said and we are currently working on the next Failory update, which will add to each interview a conclusion explaining the precise cause of failure and which will go along with an article that will explain how to prevent such problem. I hope you will then find Failory more useful and thanks for your feedback!
Nice resource! Just a tip, you may want to focus a bit more on the readability. The type size is rather small (14pt). Also, there seems to be some styling issues on OSX Chrome (the top headings are crammed into a small width) ;)
@axertion Thanks you very much for your feedback. We will enlarge the type size soon. We are also working in polishing the website and making it more user-friendly.
This is a great hunt! Have always kept myself busy finding such stories around. This helps a lot of people to do a reality check before even starting up. :D
@robbyreindeer Hi Robby. To get the first interviews we read lots of failed startups articles and contacted the entrepreneurs. Luckily they were all willing to join the Failory community.
@clominson Thank you! I don't think it shows up on mobile. On another note is making a podcast and/or the interviews available in audio format a part of Failory's roadmap?
@futi Yes we are definitely doing a podcast in the near future. Suscribe to our newsletter to keep updated on the latest news! Thanks for the feedback.
Great website! Always good to learn from others mistakes. Quick question, how do you start an interview? Do you personally contact these entrepreneurs asking for an interview, @clominson?
@ddouble7 I am glad to hear you like Failory. In order to get the first interviews, we personally contacted different entrepreneurs and asked them whether they had a failed startup. If you would like to be interviewed you only have to submit your email in the submit page and we will contact you soon!
@clominson A good source of failed startups could be Startup Graveyard, there is a good list where you can contact all the founders of these fail companies. The website gets constantly updated: https://www.producthunt.com/post...
Wow, this looks like a great resource! We are so often looking to what the top guys "did right" that we totally forget to look at the pitfalls we need to avoid. Looking forward to some more interviews! You should submit this to Startup Stash if it isn't there already
@renee_sandefur Thanks for your feedback. Don't forget to bookmark and suscribe to our newsletter to keep updated on the latest additions. Also, thanks for your recommendation. I have just submitted Failory to Startup Stash. Hope they approve it!
@sean_murphy Hi Sean, thanks for your question! The 3 most common mistakes are usually lack of time, developing a product that nobody need (so we can say no validation of ideas) and problems to monetize it. Hope you find Failory useful!
@samrye_enspiral In Failory we interview the failed startup owners. In Startup Graveyard they summarized the causes of failure in each company. I personally recommend you both websites, as well as Indie Hackers!
We recently launched failureline.com and failureline aims to provide a platform where users can document their failure and success stories in a timeline format.
These timelined stories can be a private diary to the user or shared with the world so that people can learn from their failure or success. You are most welcome to share some stories there :)
