I have used it extensively in Andrew Chen's talk platform: http://talk.andrewchen.co/ and also for Write The Docs forum at http://forum.writethedocs.org/. I think it meets most of the goals of a well structured, well monitored, and custom discussion forum. I like it.

Pros:

Highly customizable and modular in what exactly we need.

Cons:

Bit of a learning curve while setting up first time. :)

Why is this featured? Anything spectacular in the new version?
Robin Ward
@t55 it's our biggest release yet! I'm biased but I think it's got a lot spectacular features in the new version: http://blog.discourse.org/2015/0...

@eviltrout It certainly looks like it. I was (and still am) seriously impressed with Discourse but its kinda strange that @ProductHunt features this version, where they normally only feature 'older' apps when a big, big update is introduced. Or when a beta is finally released. I still haven't forgotten the last release: https://www.producthunt.com/post...

@eviltrout @t55 Seems like the blog is down?
Robin Ward
@blake @t55 Sorry about that, it was a temporary blip and is up now.

@t55 I'm not sure about the criteria for being featured as I'm new to product hunt, but I'd love to discuss new features or any questions anyone might have!

Discourse is a civilized discussion construction kit for the modern, open web -- built for you with a whole lot of JavaScript, some Ruby, and most of all, love.

@codinghorror I love Discourse, as a user and an admin. I wish all forums would switch over.

Great product! I only dabble in front end development and was able to easily customize my site using the tools and outstanding support that Discourse provides. They were even nice enough to include a screenshot of my Discourse instance (Polygonal Talk)!

An awesome tool! I often go on Discourse based forums, and always love the look and the way they work.

We use Discourse at Bugcrowd and so far I've been quite happy with it. Easy to setup and customize, helped us launch a forum very quickly!

Discourse is easily the best community management tool available currently. It's fast and is simple to use.

Pros:

Extremely simple and fast to use.

Cons:

I don't think this Discourse needs anything now. It's lovely.

@dshan The last time Discourse was listed was in January 2014. That was during beta, well before Discourse 1.0 in August 2014. (It was probably still beta 0.8 back then.) We're on version 1.3 as of today, in June 2015.

Happy using it for my projects:

Eve.QA - easy and expressive Q&As for events.

Oprium.com - a place to share and discover exciting opportunities.

Apteka.TJ - forum on health, beauty and family well-being.

Pros:

Robust and modern FOSS forum engine.

Great core team and friendly community.

Powerful full-text search, good plugins and easy to customize.

Cons:

Currently cannot:

- assign moderators and staff per-category;

- let login with phone # (i.e. without email) out of the box.

It is not free. Why does the description say free then?
