@adrien_roose How does this compare to VanMoof's bikes? Great to see new folks in the space and hopefully bringing the price down!
Laurent VB
@adrien_roose @joostschuur Not the maker, but I had the opportunity to try both. I crashed with the Van Moof Electrified S for my first e-bike ride. It was heavy and not very instinctive to ride for a daily road bike rider. The Cowboy is lighter and feels more natural to ride. I might be wrong but I think it's less powerful. It's also 40% cheaper.
Adrien Roose
Hi @joostschuur ! Our bike is nearly twice cheaper, 2kg lighter, the motor assistance is more intuitive, the transmission works with a carbon belt, the disc brakes are hydraulic and the battery is removable. The App features also go much further.
Daniel Kegel
@joostschuur @adrien_roose one of the biggest knocks on the Van Moof Electrified S is that the non-electric parts like chain drive, brakes etc. are pretty low-end considering the price of the bike. There is certainly room to improve there. The VM does have a 65% larger battery (418wh vs 252wh for the Cowboy) and I'm not sure what you mean by 'more intuitive motor assistance'.
Adrien Roose
@joostschuur @danielkegel yes they do have a larger battery (but non removable which implies having to charge the bike itself and not the battery). By a more intuitive motor assistance I mean that the Cowboy bike is equipped with both a speed and a torque sensor and thus we automatically use these signals to determine the amount of assistance given by the motor, instead of asking the user to choose different mode of assistance manually.
Daniel Kegel
@adrien_roose correct, although I don't really see the benefit of a removable battery. Most people won't buy a second battery and if they do, they won't take it with them. The only use case would be changing the empty battery at home for a full one. What is the power/max speed of the motor?
Anthony Da Mota
Woah! I love the design and the minimalist but very useful features. Some are reporting that 50km of battery is small, but it's not imo 🤔 Looking forward to buy it but… it's a little pricey for me :(
Adrien Roose
Thank you @akdm_ !

Spending almost 1K5 for a bike seems like a deal breaker, but again, if your target are wealthy folks with 5k monthly income, then this is gonna be really huge. I'm a sucker for well designed products and this seems to be of of em
Melvyn Hills
@uxdzen most good *electric* bikes are within the 2K-2K5 price range.
Hassan Abdulhamid
@melvynhills So they are not made for the masses then, cause there's no way someone like me making 2kp/m would want to get that kind of bike which I would love to get btw.. but you get the drift. There are millions of people like me in that same situation.
Hassan Abdulhamid
@melvynhills FYI, I'm not saying cowboy isn't good or anything like that, I'm just pointing out what most people already have in mind. Its still one of the most well designed bikes out there !
Melvyn Hills
@uxdzen 100% agree on that. Electric bikes are still relatively new, their price will go down in the coming years, and so will become more accessible to the masses. I don't think it's relevant to debate whether it's affordable for everyone. Electric bikes sells are soaring right now, at least in Europe. This is a premium product at a very good quality/price ratio. Just look at the "Related products" section on the right column of this page to see other bikes much pricier (for an inferior product IMHO). This is a very competitive product at this price range.
Adrien Roose
Hello @uxdzen ! Thank you so much for your feedback! Our objective is indeed to make electric bike attractive and popular to a larger audience. Unfortunately, with this first model, it couldn't be cheaper without compromising quality. I sincerely hope that our next model will be cheaper.
Laurent VB

I had the opportunity to witness the whole development process of the bike as we shared office space with the Cowboys during one year. They have put so much care into the design and building of this bike, refusing to compromise on anything and with a great attention to details.

In the end, they made the best e-bike I have ever seen at a lower price point than any of the competitors.

When I finally had a test ride with the bike, I was a bit scared. I had previously brought a heavy Van Moof to the ground (with quite the injury as a result), partly because of my inexperience with e-bikes. On the Cowboy, though, the experience was delightful. It's as if you're riding a real bike, but there's some unnoticable breeze pushing you in the back just when you need it.

Loved it.

Pros:

Great visual and industrial design. Very competitive price. Nice app.

Cons:

Probably more scared of having it stolen ;-) Harder to store than my usual road bike.

Jouni ®
How is the top speed? its only single gear so I'm guessing you won't be going much over 25km/h? Can you attach a rear bike rack with that battery?
Dirk S
@the_jouni I am riding it every day, and I chose to use the „off-road“ mode with 30km/h limit a lot. When I ride my standard route with 20km distance and some 250m in height difference, I end up with an average above 30km/h
Solomon Kingsnorth
I couldn't track them down, will try again today. Yeah, it looks awesome. I think it's got the potential to do for electric bikes what the iPod did for Mp3 players.
Adrien Roose
Hello @solomon_teach ! Thanks for the Hunt ! I'm the founder of Cowboy. How can I help here?
Alexandre Marcondes
Is that possible to connect the bike sensors with Strava or Runtastic using the ANT+ protocol? Is there any API or SDK for developers that want to integrate stuff with the bike?
Asher Harris
I'm curious, slick design, great features, I probably won't buy one (I have a human powered road bike) but I think there are a lot of people who will. Hope the roll out goes well 🙌🏾
Adrien Roose
Thank you @asher_harris !

Looks amazing! I would be happy to beta test this in NYC where you can really hard test and fine tune the anti-theft components... : )
Stijn Beauprez

I did a test ride at a meetup and was really impressed about the design and riding experience. I think it's a great bike to move around in the city.

Pros:

Great looking bike

Value for money, great electric bike for a fair price compared to traditional electric bikes.

Cons:

You still need to carry a lock if you want to be sure they can not steal it.

Orcun Akca

Test rode it in Bru and very impressed.

Pros:

Simple and beautiful design, very responsive pedal sensors, great price point

Cons:

Nothing really...

Steve Salens

I was looking into buying a speedelec, but that's an expensive joke and I don't really need the 45km/h or insane batter life since my commute is only 10km. But all regular e-bikes are ugly and dull, so I was stuck in a dilemma. But then I stumbled upon this Cowboy thingy, which did not look ugly and dull. So I ordered it the next day.

I did some shorter and longer rides with it and I can only conclude this is a great product. I'm a heart patient, so I have to keep my HR down or I'm a dead man. The Cowboy makes me forget all about that since 1) the assistance is there, but it's not overwhelming 2) there's no social stigma since you can't really tell it's an e-bike and it just looks cool.

I rode a couple of frontwheel driven e-bikes and a Shimano Steps mid-engine system before and the Cowboy is nothing like that. Other e-bikes give you more of a scooter-ish feel. The Cowboy does not have a controller, it doesn't even have gears. You want to ride faster? Just pedal harder/faster. It will match your pace seamlessly. Remember when all touch screen phones were crap and then the iPhone came out? This is kind of the same thing.

The design is also quite something. It really is the Tesla of e-bikes in the sense that everyone is intrigued by it and asks you all about it. But where Tesla kind of cheaps out on some of their parts, the Cowboy does not: the tyres are Schwalbe, the grips are Brooks, the pedals are nice and large, the saddle is decent (but not great). The handle bar is a tad smaller than what you might be used to. I like it, it doesn't take too much space in the hallway, and it adds some fixie nostalgia. More attention to detail: the small rubber strip on the crossbar of the rear fork keeps you from scratching up the battery when removing it. When you accidentally turn your front wheel all the way around, the handle bar does not touch the top bar, they left 2-3mm clearance. The Cowboy wasn't built overnight.

Also, the bike is completely black (except for the disk brakes). The screws on the stems? Black. The nipples of the wheels? Black. The cups of the bottom bracket? Black. The rails of the saddle? Black. The rear wheel motor? Black. This is not the kind of bike you spend another $500 on upgrading parts here and there. You can add mudguards or a rack if you really want to, but that's about it.

The offroad mode limits assistance to 30km/h instead of 25km/h. IIlegal in Belgium, but so is tax fraud, highway speeding and spraying your lawn. It's great. You're a tad faster than every e-bike granny or grandpa, but it's not dangerously fast. The disk brakes will stop you just in time for every obstacle, every time. In offroad mode the battery will last 40km. Ok, that's not that much. But at 16kg and 1800 euros, it's understandable.

Ok, ok, fanboy alert. Surely, there must be some drawbacks? This is going to sound cliché but there is only one: it's just too nice. At work, I hide mine in the boiler room instead of putting it in the bike rack. I still take my gf's bike to the local supermarket. I don't want it to get stolen, I don't want anyone to even damn touch it. An integrated (physical) lock would have been nice since any aftermarket lock will ruin the bike's aesthetic. Also, the app has some lagg to it, and I hope they further develop the analytics/ride history part.

But other than that, this thing is a Tinder Super Like for sure.

Pros:

Design, smooth assitance, quality parts, price

Cons:

Risk of theft

Thomas Charles Vanderstraeten
Sleek design, robust mechanics and electronics...congrats to the makers for this wonderful urban machine!
Laurent Bouty

Try it 15 minutes in brussels. Quite convincing.

Pros:

Design bike experience

Cons:

No Mud gard, battery maybe?? Not powerful enough

Jean-François Dh
I am a beta early adopter of the product. I rode 1000km in two months and a half. The feeling of the bike and the engine still amaze me :)! Very pleased with the overall performance of the bike ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Laurent Bouty
@jean_francois_dh hi jean Francois would you advice it a city bike (brussels intra muros) ? Work with business casual clothes ? What about mud gard?
Jean-François Dh
@laurent_bouty works with all types of clothes (never tried with a dress or a skirt though. I installed an “ass saver” on mine, works fine.
SĂ©bastien Vandersteen

Hi, I'm one of the happy beta-tester and I've used the cowboy for the past 2 months. The bike and the sweet app obviously changed my day-to-day work's ride.

Brussels is a hilly city. The Cowboy helps me getting used to go from one place to another without thinking about the distance.

I deeply recommend anyone to test it.

Pros:

Design, useful, Light with a great mobile app

Cons:

Only one size (for now)

Miguel Van Damme

I've been riding a beta-version of the cowboy bike during 3 months. I can testify that riding my Cowboy 🤠 🚲 is definitely the best way I experienced to go to work over the last ten years. Thanks to its great e-acceleration, my Door-to-door average speed is above 22 km/h without too much effort.

What differentiates a Cowboy bike versus other e-bikes is for sure its design, light weight and overall quality. The brakes are also particularly efficient.

Going forward, I’m waiting for a software update in order to have the front and back light in alternative mode to be more visible by night.

Pros:

Design, speed, brakes, software updates

Cons:

Biking not always an option to move around town, not foldable bike

Laurent Bouty
Hello Miguel battery was sufficient for biking in brussels or did you charge it twice a day?
Alexis Houssou

Coolest ebike experience I’ve ever had (tried it in Paris)! The UX is really well-done and it’s a beauty to ride. Addictive!

Pros:

Slick Design, Badass look, Smart tech

Cons:

Only available in Belgium for now

Diego TKt

I had the opportunity to do a test ride with this beauty in Brussels and it was definitely the most user-friendly e-bike I tested so far. I loved the way the assistance dynamically evolves. I moved to San Francisco now, I really wonder how it would behave up and down the hills! Good luck with the launch.

btw: does the app include an easy way to share your bike with someone else? I guess both must have the app downloaded, but is it easily shared?

Pros:

Sleek design, overall light bike, smart e-powered assistance that matches your commute's relief and give you an extra boost when needed.

Cons:

Could use some safety features

Pepelitsa k
This is a very handy cycling app, very light and easy to use. I use this application because I constantly ride with the child in the back, the child sits behind me in the bike trailer Copilot and I need to be distracted by the child, and using the application it is easy to monitor the riding state . I use a bike trailer to teach my child how to ride a bike, it attaches quickly and easily to almost any bike with a seatpost. A very cool thing.
Shariffintech

I'd buy it for the $1000-1350 price range 100%

Pros:

Design / Functionality

Cons:

Price
