Hey everyone! After nearly a year of building Cap.so, we’re thrilled to unveil our latest relaunch and show you everything we’ve been working on. We've rebuilt the entire app from the ground up, focusing on what matters most: making screen recording and sharing as effortless and powerful as possible.
Back in April, we introduced the first early version of Cap, and the response blew us away. We gained thousands of users, hit #1 on Hacker News (Show HN), and trended on GitHub with over 5k stars. Most importantly, we received incredible feedback that’s shaped the new direction we’re excited to share today.
What’s new in Cap?
Cap is now local-first and packed with powerful new features, including:
• 🚀 A powerful editor
• 📸 Screenshots
• ⌨️ Hotkeys
• 🎯 Quick action thumbnails
• 🌐 Team sharing capabilities
• 💻 Windows early access release
…and so much more.
But the star of this release, v0.3.1, is our biggest feature yet: Cap Apps.
These are community-submitted apps that extend Cap’s functionality in exciting ways. The first app launching today is S3 Config, which lets you connect your own S3 bucket. With this, all new shareable links are stored and served directly from your bucket, giving you 100% ownership of your data.
We can’t wait to hear what you think! Please share your feedback—it means the world to us. Thank you for your incredible support 🙏
@mishra_mayank Hey, thank you! First off, we’re open source and community focused. Our roadmap is actively driven by ongoing user feedback. Feature wise, we’re local first, meaning all recordings by default don’t leave your device (unless you choose to create a shareable link). We also now offer custom S3 bucket storage support, meaning you can maintain 100% ownership over your uploaded shareable link recordings!
Congrats Richie on the launch. So much happened in this rebuild!
Really looking forward using it with my own S3 bucket.
Open source is all about choice and this is super epic 🚀
@jalcantara Hey Jorge! Thank you. We're open source and privacy focused. With Cap, you can connect you own S3 bucket and maintain 100% ownership over your data. We also have team specific features, like sharing videos and spaces.
Alright, @richiemcilroy, I see. So the focus is mostly on a more “team” collaborative use, ready for the enterprise that wants to keep all data in-house?
That’s a fair approach to the market, well done!
@jalcantara Exactly! We've built an all-in-one screen recorder which is ready to be scaled and used for teams 😁 but still the perfect tool for solo use too.
Cap is one of my favorite pieces of software I've used in the recent years – best part is you get to own your data since they're fully open-source + via their S3 integration. Incredibly excited for this launch!
Cap is... Cap
Been following @richiemcilroy 's journey since the first announcement tweet
Proud to say i've been a user since pre-beta, and can see the epic trajectory of this product
Cap is Cap
Congrats on relaunching and much success! If you ever want to discuss integrating with Dropshare (for adding support to upload to many other storage providers other than S3), feel free to reach out.
I tried it just then. The 20 secs capture video won't be able to play more than 0.5 second in the powerful editor. There are quite a few "coming soon" feature isnt obvious for user to know unless you have to hover your mouse over each feature and see whether its a placeholder or the actual feature.
I like the concept connecting to your own S3 bucket but the basic functionality of the video editing isn't working right now.
I've been a long fan of Richie's work and really happy to see him launch this version of Cap. I can't wait for the Windows version to be finally ready for me to test and make my new default screen recording app. BYO S3 is a great addition too, so I can have 100% ownership of my recordings. Keep up the good work Richie and team.
Congratulations on the amazing launch! So happy that open-source software projects like Cap are being worked on. Will definitely switch over from loom over the following weekend.
Are there any demo or app walkthrough videos available? Or even screenshots?
Very much interested to learn more about the capabilities of the editor, but I'm on Windows and couldn't find any details on the website.
Does it have features like in Automatic zoom, Smooth cursor movement etc.
Similar to Screen Studio?

It's weird that Cap doesn't have product demo because it should be Screen Recorded product
Congratulations on the product launch! I’ve been following the journey on X from day one—truly impressed by the incredible UI/UX. Excited to see what features are coming next! 🚀🚀
