I wrote a medium about Beme before v1.0 ...I still feel the same. We need a teleportation app - imagine an uber without the hassle of cars or rides and everyone is a driver. https://medium.com/@andypngr/bem...
Looking forward to playing with this! Hopefully @CaseyNeistat stops by and takes questions from the community π
btw ICYMI back in September Casey did a Product Hunt LIVE: https://www.producthunt.com/live...
@nivo0o0@caseyneistat Same for me, the new design is π. Yes It would be great if he could stop by if he find some time today. Also @caseyneistat "Can I be in the vlog ?" π
Everyone, including @caseyneistat has gone silent on this after 1.0 was released. Are they working on a pivot or has the product failed to achieve product-market fit? Genuinely curious. I hope they do figure it out.
Nice. I was early in the first version but it just kind of fell out of use for me. Trying it again though.
It's an interesting space, where in some ways I feel like the phone form factor is getting in the way of what should essentially be a GoPro strapped to your forehead.
Anyway, a stab at breaking out the 'showcasing-your-life' space:
1. Instagram as edited, curated, persistent.
2. Snapchat as edited, curated, non-persistent.
3. Beme as unedited, curated, persistent.
Snapchat started similar, so no editing and short videos. This takes the concept more in the raw direction. What I am missing is better discovery of other users, seems I can only search by username.
I have lots of respect for @mhkt, @caseyneistat, and the Beme team for building this. Building an app is not easy. Building an app that people want to use is even harder.
While v1.0 brings in a lot of nice UI/UX updates, I still question if Beme at its core is a sound idea.
People (me included) bring up Snapchat all the time when comparing with Beme. While Beme and Snapchat may be on opposite ends of a spectrum, the challenge is that they share same spectrum. From a content creation point of view, the two apps fundamentally compete for the same "I must share this!" moments in our lives. Right now I can't think of any reason why I'd open up Beme over Snapchat to share a moment.
Just my 2 cents. Maybe I misunderstand the use case...
I think trying to bite into Snapchats user base is a lose-lose situation, they are way too hot right now, if anything I would think how I could piggyback off their momentum. I highly doubt an acqui-hire is on the horizons, typically snapchat acquisitions are for the tech, besides who wants jobs? haha. I like the honesty but maybe they should take their own advice and stick to Youtube videos. This is a perfect example of how hard it is to be a tech founder, no amount of celebrities pushing your product will make you successful unless your product is already good and just needs a kickstart of users. (bad app = more money/time to push, eventually dies, Good app = Spend lump sum to get eyeballs then go viral, hockey stick curve) I wish them the best of luck, and would love to see them prove my assumptions wrong.
As an Android user, while I agree that discoverability needs to be be better, the idea of this raw app is genius. I am one who, even though I work in tech everyday, is sickened by the fact that when I go to a concert, it's phones everywhere. I used to be the person who always recorded concerts, only to discover I didn't even remember the joy of the concert afterwards, since all I was really doing was reaping the sweet friend Karma. With this, hopefully we can get the best of both worlds.
@linkchef So instead of seeing and recording, BEME users are going to be pressing the phone to their chest and publishing? Is that the difference? I don't think it's going to stop people from sharing and NOT living in the moment. Would love to hear your thoughts.
@tacack That could definitely be the case. I do know that the screen can be a distracting experience. Trying to make sure that your picture looks good takes away mental power to actually experience, and share with the people sitting around you, from what I've seen, and heard from others. It will be interesting to see how this works in the future, to see if it actually does take you out of the experience like every other social media/recording, or does change something.
Struggling to find people to follow on the app besides Casey. I want to love it, having trouble moving friends over. Maybe because I've tried to move my friends to so many platforms: path, hello, path, etc
After 6 months of hard work, Casey Neistat and the Beme team launched their new version of Beme, rebuilt from the ground up. You can learn more in this Mashable article by @HeySamantha (http://mashable.com/2016/05/02/b...)
I used the beta on Android and stopped using it after several weeks but now I am back.
Thanks @Samsheffer for sharing this news on Twitter :)
It would be interesting to hear the story of the relaunch from the Beme Team, what they learned from the first launch on ProductHunt and in general,...
Of course, @caseyneistat shared more about the app on his vlog:
Love how honest he is: "This app kind of sucks. The idea is awesome but the app itself needs to be better." And this is the new beme and now we know why he wasn't talking about it. π
@rrhoover@caseyneistat yeah I love the honesty and did wonder why it was rarely mentioned in the Vlogs.
Will be interested to hear from some old and new Beme users to see their thoughts!
We should get Casey back on to do another LIVE :)
@rrhoover@caseyneistat great quality of a founder, Stewart Butterfield says this of Slack: "Oh, God, yeah. I try to instill this into the rest of the team but certainly I feel that what we have right now is just a giant piece of sh!t. Like, itβs just terrible and we should be humiliated that we offer this to the public." (via @holman)
@rrhoover@caseyneistat It is a phenomenal idea, but yes, it does have some time before it appeals to more audience. The current Android version has BUGS.....BUG!..... BUGS EVERYWHERE! I lost most of my Bemes after they failed to upload. On a side note, I think if top influencers were to promote this app, it would definitely sky rocket among the general population!
