Hey Product Hunt gang! 👋

Solo founder here bringing you Balance - a modest, yet powerful personal finance software that you'll actually enjoy using.

After trying out a handful of apps, I decided to take a stab at building one myself.

Here are some highlights:

🏦 Unified Financial View: Bring all your accounts and assets together in one place for a complete financial overview.
📃 Transactions on Autopilot: Track every transaction across all accounts. No more sifting through different banks.
🏷️ Smart Categorization: With Balance, you can assign multiple categories to a transaction—just like #tags. This makes grouping transactions logically much easier. Use these tags to filter or create custom views of your data.
📊 Transaction Trends: Gain insights about your money with Transaction Trends. Spot patterns and get a sense of how money flows.
🤖 AI Chat: A financial assistant in your pocket. Balance AI has context of your transactional and account data, so ask questions or get insights about your money.

Balance has a lot more to offer and is currently available in the US 🇺🇸 and Canada 🇨🇦. If you're in the market for a personal finance app, do explore Balance. And if you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

Cheers,

Balance looks like a clean, thoughtful approach to personal finance — love the focus on clarity and understanding over complexity.

Hey PD! Balance sounds like a game-changer for managing personal finances. The unified view and smart categorization are especially appealing. It's great to see a tool that makes financial tracking effortless and even enjoyable! Excited to see Balance thrive. Cheers to you! 🙌

I'm not sure why this didn't get more traction, as it seems very well made. That said, the #1 question would be what level of security are you working with here and how can users trust connecting all their financial data in this app? I guess the obvious follow up would be, why is Balance better than a Wealthfront or similar app? I like the idea of being able to chat with transactions, but I wonder if that's enough to get people to sign up. Building trust seems like the biggest barrier to adoption here. Very cool UI though! I like your work.

@gneuron_grant hey there, thanks for the kind words!

You're absolutely right that trust is the biggest barrier for newer fintech apps. I'm using Plaid as the financial data aggregator, and for most major US institutions, authentication happens via OAuth - so you log directly into your bank without credentials going through Plaid, which is much more secure.

The key difference from something like Wealthfront is that Balance is built as a comprehensive personal finance tool - you can see all your accounts and transactions in one place, unlike Wealthfront which keeps things siloed to their own accounts. My goal is to embed LLMs throughout the app to provide users with the best financial insights.

Chat is just the starting point. I'm experimenting with features like end-of-month summaries (think closing books for your personal finances) where LLMs provide actionable insights with concrete evidence from your transaction history. The potential for AI-driven financial coaching based on your actual data is huge.
