One of my greatest complaints with Firebase is their limited query support. (For example you can't do a WHERE query. Instead you must do ORDER BY and LIMIT). If you can provide greater query support, that would be a HUGE advantage. Also, why did you choose to make this AngularJS specific vs Javascript (to include ReactJS, etc)?
One other question: what investment do you all have? In other words, what assurance does one have that this will stay up and running? I noticed you raised $1MM between 2013 & 2014 according to AngelList but nothing since but your team is pretty sizable.
Sorry for all the questions ... just wondering about the sustainability of this. I'd love to have something like this for ReactJS :)
@allnick The query limitation you're describing does not exist in Backand. Our queries support Where, Group By, Inner Select and more. You can write queries with MySQL syntax or in a Mongo-inspired NoSQL syntax. Read more here: http://docs.backand.com/en/lates...
The choice for focusing on Angular was mainly to focus our efforts on a particular developer community. That lets us focus our marketing as well as examples, starter apps, docs, etc. Technically, it's not limited to Angular. In fact, we already have a JavaScript/JQuery SDK (found here: https://github.com/backand/jquer...) and working on a ReactJS SDK (to be released right after our Angular 2 SDK).
Regarding funding: We're not quite ready to talk about it, but the numbers on AngelList (and Crunchbase) are not up-to-date. We've raised more money and are backed by 2 VCs. In any case, we pride ourselves on having a very open platform that allows easily migrating -- and plan to make it even easier.
P.S. Love the questions. Keep em comin'
@nissimle Hi there, thanks for the feedback!
We have a lot of stuffed planned and in the works. We are currently working on several major features, among them:
- New SDK for AngularJS 2, NodeJS
- Storage of files and assets with Backand
- Geo-location features / location-based services
- Support for other frameworks besides AngularJS and Ionic (ReactJS, for example)
- The ability to have more than one environment for the same app (staging, test, production, etc.)
- Tons of new 3rd-party integrations, including Twilio, New Relic, Segment.io and the list is long (see here: https://www.backand.com/integrat...)
- And more :-)
Please let us know if you have other suggestions.
@itayher@nissimle I am curious what will you exactly offer for "Geo-location features / location-based services". Isn't that locally in the native device? Or is it a "middle layer" I call when I normally use, let say, Google Location Service?
@quanghoc@nissimle Yes, a middle tier, which lets you save locations in the database with latitude/longitude and the ability to perform advanced filters and queries on it. For example, you could filter all the rows that are within a certain distance from a particular location (e.g., the location of the device).
This looks really cool! I'm excited to try it out. Q: What if at some point I want to move off of your service? Would I need to build an entire backend from scratch or is there a way to export code?
@avizuber Keep in mind that the database is yours. This is a unique feature of Backand so you're covered there. You can export the configuration and the code, which will provide you all of the JS code, but of course you'll need to make it work with whatever backend you use.
I've been using backand for a while now, for a side project I've been working on.
So far it has proved to be a great alternative for a back end implementation, so I can focus on my POC.
What I like about it?
- very customizable setup, plus the ability to write javascript code in custom actions
- built in object permissions and filtering
- free static pages hosting
- a VERY responsive support team
What I would love to see?
- more integrations (segment.io? logging?)
- better documentation
- create more than one environment in the same app (staging / prod) to test changes before deploying them
- running scheduled tasks
Just spoke to Daniel who's a dev in their team...totally agree with what @eshaham says about the support. Seems rock solid!
And looks stupid-simple for anyone to use which never hurt... :-)
As Avinash says, my kudos goes to Daniel, with whom I spoke via mail - very responsive and knowledgeable. My question was how does Back& stack up against Firebase. His reply was very good and I can include it here, but I think the founders may want to answer as well. Also, I'm guessing that most readers here will benefit to hear how Back& is different(better) from Firebase.
@itayher I noticed there is a typo on your ProductHunt popover (the button reads SING UP instead of SIGN UP)
The backend as a service space is heating up, and to me it seems like it's the tooling that sets each one of them apart. The offering from Back& seems substantial, intrigue to play around with it.
@color2life We already have import functionality that lets you upload JSON (under the Data tab). The database you can import/export freely with any standard database tool. We are developing more functionality in this area.
@ssttiivveennss It so happens that import and export are going to be implemented in next week's release. As for the database, you get full access so you can import/export or use it for anything else, as you please.
I played around with Backand for a couple of hours today. While I'm not very well versed with Angular, I was still able to get the example app up and running quickly and even added some features to it without much trouble. Nice job! I will second the need for scheduled tasks too, and IFTT and/or Zapier integration.
@tbirand Really good to hear you had a smooth experience. Scheduled tasks are coming out in February. IFTTT and Zapier integration is a great idea that has been proposed in the past and definitely on our list. We might move it up the list, as we hear more requests. BTW, we've made it really to develop your own integrations with Backand Actions and a bunch of folks have already done some really cool things. You can read more about Custom Actions here: http://docs.backand.com/en/lates...
Hello all, and thank you for hunting us, @benln.
I'm Itay, the CTO and a co-founder of Backand. Backand is a powerful and easy-to-use backend-as-a-service tailored for AngularJS and the Ionic framework.
It has tons of cool features, including social login, real-time, server-side logic, ready to use integrations with 3rd parties (such as Stripe and MailChimp) and much more. We also provide you with a free cloud database and free hosting. We're giving out a cool t-shirt to the first couple hundred Product Hunters who sign up for the service. Please give it a try and let me know what you think or if you have any questions.
Hi,
Thanks for the feedback...
Regarding the question about Firebase, while Firebase is a great real time DB that also has social login functionality, Backand expands upon this by providing a large amount of supporting functionality. Backand gives the developer access to server-side JavaScript code execution, allowing for functionality that depends on a secure execution environment (such as payment processing). This functionality can be used for integration with any web-based third-party services like Stripe, PayPal, Mandrill, and AWS, among others. In addition, Backand gives you direct access to the database, allowing you to not only take the data with you when you go, but also giving you the capability to integrate third-party services directly with your application's data, instead of having to write a translation layer - something that firebase doesn't offer.
Hi all, i tried to open backand.com many times, and i got the same error message every time

Someone can tell me what happen with Backand.com
