Hello, Product Hunt! We are thrilled to announce the open beta for Anytype today! We believe that any software should support fundamental digital freedoms. With the rise of cryptography and computer systems, it's now possible to guarantee these freedoms in the digital world: privacy of thoughts, freedom of speech, right to authorship, and autonomy from software providers. With these principles in mind, we've crafted Anytype - an all-in-one tool that can help you organise your digital life. People use it to manage projects, organise collections of movies and books, for daily journaling, and a long tail of other use-cases. Anytype is a community product, built with the community. We listen, we improve, and we welcome you to join and give your perspective on how Anytype should evolve. Visit our community at community.anytype.io We warmly welcome you to our contributors' community, which we just launched today: https://github.com/orgs/anyproto... We're happy to answer your questions! Anton Pronkin Co-founder of Anytype
Gabe Moronta
@pronkin_ This is pretty cool, congrats on the launch!
Anton Pronkin
@gabe_moronta thank you 🌈
Jonathan Zhan
@pronkin_ Hi, congratulations on the 2.0 launch! In Nov 22 https://community.anytype.io/t/w... anytype communicated that the web clipper was being delayed due to reprioritisation - would you be able to share about where that sits on the roadmap now? It's a very important piece of the puzzle for me. :)

@pronkin_ @jonzhan We will definitely present Anytype webclipper in the near future; we have already started development. It is challenging to run webclipper with a client-first application and provide a high-quality user experience, but we are excited to do so. The coolest part is that it also will be open sourced, so community can help us improve it

Launching soon!
This looks awesome! At first glance, it looks like a more user-friendly version of Notion (as minimalist as Notion is, I find it offers way too many customizations) mixed with the knowledge graph capabilities of something like Obsidian. I'm excited to give this a spin!
Zhanna Sharipova
@matthew_ritchie yes, we wanted to mix up a graph of objects with block-based tool to create objects, so anyone can create spaces on decetralized architecture without code (and these spaces would speak the same language of objects, types and relations, meaning they would be interoperable without an API
kreme
@sharipova what does that very last bit mean? [that they would be interoperable without an api]

Anytype is the future of second brain and note-taking app. I was looking for an alternative to Notion, I love the features they have but I'm concerned about my privacy and security. I tried Obsidian and it is promising too but lacks features like Notion. I was looking for an alternative to both of them. I found Evernote and Nimbus Note but they are all overkill for my use case. I don't want to take so much time for organizing my things and again they are hosted on their servers and I'm still worried for my privacy. Until I come across to "toolfinder.co" website by Keep Productive and I saw this product! I was so amazed because this note-taking app uses cryptography and I can say this app is a "Web3" product which is perfect for me as I work in this industry. I love the idea and the principles of this product. As opensource and web3 advocate this is a must app for you to use when you want to organize your digital life. I can tell that Anytype is a combination of Obsidian and Notion but Web3. Just today I started to use this app as my main and permanent second brain. I'll probably include Anytype in my blog when I share my productivity apps. Great work out there!
Zhanna Sharipova
@warengonzaga great to hear you found anytype and that it delivers a sweetspot of beautiful writing tool, powerful way to organize objects and also all the architectural benefits of private, offline first, user-owned world. Hope you can move more of use cases to anytype
Waren Gonzaga
@sharipova Indeed will share more from my blog about how I use Anytype as a web3 user. However, I have a question about the storage. Are you folks using IPFS or any decentralized storage system?
Zhanna Sharipova
@warengonzaga we use IPFS for files. Though your devices create a private IPFS network (so your files are only stored by you, not some other people)

This is legit, and I would obviously say this as one of Anytype's first investors. But I was also one of their first users in the pre-alpha phase a while back. I distinctly remember how that version crashed and took down the entire office network. Today, I'm genuinely impressed, and very proud of @pronkin_ and @sharipova and @charmandro and @anton_barulenkov and @requilence and @yasyuk . I've just downloaded and synced a bunch of notes across my Mac, Pixel phone and iPad - and it worked like a dream. Now if you can just fix the onboarding process and simplify it, I'll be able to get my mom to use it too...
Roman Khafizianov
@jagsingh Haha, yep! That was when our P2P stack thought routers were just speed bumps. Whoops! πŸ˜… Now we're making sure to take care of them. Thank you, Jag!
Charlotte Chiang
@pronkin_ @sharipova @anton_barulenkov @requilence @yasyuk @jagsingh It is still one of my most vivid memories from those three months ;)
Zhanna Sharipova
@jagsingh Thank you, Jag! That dream we had 4 years ago of peer-to-peer app that would feel fun to use has made to Open Beta with your support!
Ronald Czachara
This is a really ambitious project. Good to see Anytype on Product Hunt now and all the best for the ongoing launch ;-)
Zhanna Sharipova
@roncz thank you! well notice, that now it's an on-going launch
Charlotte Chiang
@roncz Thank you for your support of our work! We're thrilled to be officially sharing our beta launch here and looking forward to more in the future :)
Vikram Aditya
Very nicely done. While I resonate with the privacy-first messaging, I would advise talking about the model you enable where documents and thoughts can be interlinked, very similar to how it's done in our brains in real life. I believe Roam Research did a decent job at it, but it never really worked. All the best team :)
Alex Katsalukha
@viks_rum Thank you very much for sharing your feedback, Vikram! I believe we relate to it with our 'tool for thought' part of Anytype's mission https://anytype.io/why/mission @pronkin_ feel free to share more on this

Anytype for me started with pure curiosity. In my school days, the internet was both costly and slow. I found myself building local networks with friends and crafting chat apps using raw TCP/IP. Fast forward to today, the landscape of app development has shifted. Many developers now lean on cloud platforms, supposed to hide from you the underlying technologies and challenges. However, this convenience comes at a cost: inefficiency, potential data breaches, and a loss of the data ownership. At the same time, over the past two decades, customer hardware has evolved remarkably. We now have affordable and speedy mobile internet, as well as smartphones with 1TB of storage. Given these advancements, the appeal of the cloud should have waned. Yet, many of us remain dependent on cloud providers and the tools that are tethered to them. So for me it was the challenge to build something useful, while using the technologies consciously in an efficient and truly secure way. When we began this journey, many said we were crazy – and perhaps they were right πŸ˜…! We encountered numerous challenges and had to address issues across the entire tech stack, rather than just focusing on user-facing features. However, this approach enriched our technical understanding and led us to more balanced solutions that remained true to our original principles. I'm so proud of Anytype team which made it possible and excited that it's now open for everyone.
Charlotte Chiang
@requilence crazy journeys are the best ones =D
Absolutely love AnyType and been using for a month so far since it has a good UI and protects info well. Was wondering how this is Web3 since I saw the tag added!
Charlotte Chiang
@pothamram Thanks for being part of our community and for your question! Fundamentally, web3 is not about crypto or NFTs; it's about data ownership. Any platforms where you upload or create data on Web 2.0 sits on the servers of platform providers, who are free to use and monetize your data however they wish. In web3, the concept is that the creator of the data - the user - should be the one who decides how it is used and where it is hosted. This is what Anytype is all about, and it's why we're in the web3 category :) Hope that helps!
Zhanna Sharipova
@pothamram the main thing is "who controls the keys" - in all cloud apps they are controlled by the developer (hence no privacy, no ownership, no governance). In anytype the keys are controlled by the user, much like keys to wallets. This is on top supported by peer-2-peer stack and that anytype is built on hashes
Sofia S
@charmandro I was worried about this, because the product looks amazing to me, but I am immediately wary of the term web3 since I always see it associated with blockchain technology. But this app doesn’t use blockchain at all, then?
I have been using the likes of Notion, Day One, Lifecraft, and what not. But lately, felt tired of Notion given how it has panned out. Would love to try this and see if this can fit in. Btw congratulations on the launch. :)
Charlotte Chiang
@naman_agrawal3 Thank you Naman, that means a lot! We have a long journey ahead towards the sustainable future we imagine, and this is just the start. Really looking forward to having you join our community. You are always welcome to share your feedback on the product experience - we try hard to pay attention to all feedback, especially from experienced users such as yourself.
Zhanna Sharipova
Today, we are introducing an all-in-one app that is used for project management, strategic documents, daily notes, task management, collections of books, articles, and other interests, personal CRM. All of which are end-to-end encrypted, work offline, sync in a p2p way, and are blazingly fast. Anytype no-code interface allows to create anything visually - from web pages to data-bases and sites. We designed the architecture of anytype to provide creators with peace of mind. Everything you are creating is yours - it’s encrypted, you control the keys, the code is open source, so anyone can verify its workings. Additionally, you get some very cool features from the box - it works on all devices, these devices can sync in peer to peer way, and everything works offline without a loss of capabilities. This architecture is enveloped into a tool that is both powerful and fun to use. At the heart of anytype is a graph of objects - that allows to interconnect all your objects and also is a universal language for all spaces. Anytype was built as a hope. That if we put our ethos, our values as the foundation of its architecture we can deliver something meaningful for those of us who cherish the dreams of a different world. I hope you can feel love and commitment that we poured into this piece of software.

@sharipova "...if we put our ethos, our values as the foundation of its architecture we can deliver something meaningful for those of us who cherish the dreams of a different world." πŸ’• wonderfully said but even more impressive than the sentiment is your team's actual implementation of those words which is evident in the principles that built one of the most elegant, modular, and therefore, powerful digital tools i've ever used πŸ’Ž what an exciting ship to board w/ a world of potential still on the horizon πŸŒ… a million congrats to the team's public launch yesterday πŸ‘πŸ½ 🌹
Captain Awesome
so glad to see the open beta debut finally. I've been a tester for a long time and I'm glad (and slightly jealous) everyone gets to experience anytype for the first time! great work team!
Zhanna Sharipova
@emmagine79 thank you, we also can't believe it actually happened. No more waiting list and we are live!
Eduardo Priuli
A place to call your own, all your ideas well organized and Safe! A great solution for entrepreneurs, marketers, copywriters, indeed your digital freedom Product! Recommended!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Bob Lucore
Anytype is much more than a note-taking app. It has the potential to overturn our corporate-dominated internet and help us all to build a new, privacy-first, cooperative web. This could be the future if we support the effort.
Zhanna Sharipova
@bob_lucore thank you Bob! This is exactly our mission to build a more cooperative web. All our architectural and design choices are best on giving the creators tools to rebuild the web that respects digital freedoms and they can govern together
Charlotte Chiang
@bob_lucore Bob, thank you! Just wanted to say that it means so much to know that our mission is resonating. Glad to have you in our community!
Great concept, but I am not sure what value does the Graph feature add. Can you please explain that? Thanks! 😊
Anton Pronkin
@kaustumbh7 Each space is a graph of interlinked objects. The graph is a universal data structure that you can show in any way. So the system can allow you to show all tasks, with some property in a view of kanban, or all people who are connected to certain topics in a list. Graphs allow you to play with data in a more flexible way
aleksandr shamis
I was counting the days to this moment. Don't think I've not been so excited about a product launch in a while. I've been an investor and user from almost day 1. Today Anytype is a breath of fresh air. There are so many apps that look similar on the surface, but none solve the infrastructural issues of privacy, speed, and extensibility.
Zhanna Sharipova
@aleksandr_shamis thank you Alex! We've been waiting for this day as well and so happy to announce the open beta and open all our repositories to prove that the infrastructure works the ways it says :)
Angel GarcΓa
Awesome app. I would like an easy way to have a folder-like structure. With the lateral widgets, it's closer though.
Charlotte Chiang
@angelcontable Glad to hear that widgets are helping you with your workflows! Collections (also introduced in the last release) are meant to function similarly to folders, with the exception that objects can exist in multiple collections at the same time. Would love to know if you've already tried them out - if yes, would be cool to hear your feedback on how we can improve the experience
Dilyara Mingalieva
I've been a heavy user of Anytype at closed Alpha!!! Great product, finally I’ve replaced Notion and many other apps! So happy that it's public now! Finally, there is an app that protects my digital freedom!
Zhanna Sharipova
@mingalieva thank you for warm words, very glad you found anytype useful
Igor Kulakov
That's great that more and more ideas have a version of an open-source product. I love this familiar notion-like design that you implemented.
Alex Ivanovskii
Excited to see what this wonderful team came up with, was following the project for some time. especially dig the design and the privacy
Charlotte Chiang
@alexey_ivanovsky1 Thank you so much @alexey_ivanovsky! Your support means the world. Today we've also opened our repositories, if you're interested you are very much invited to check them here: https://github.com/anyproto
Sergey Fuksman
The source code for the entire system is published on GitHub, not just some parts! So not only can everyone verify the code, but even self-host Anytype 🀯
Zhanna Sharipova
@fuksman thank you, Sergey, the repos look great :)
