@nikitakorotaev the most immediate one is to offer backup services to our users. Users can use anytype for free without any storage or upload limits when they self-host their data (like use their own disk space). Some users might want to ensure their data is also backed up, so is stored not only on their disk space - we will offer a place on anytype nodes to them, so they can store their data there (anytype will not have access to the encryption keys)
Hi Ms. @sharipova I am an alpha tester & loving the robust functionality of Anytype so far although the similarity to other tools doesn't sit well with me. I recently had an on-boarding session which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have some questions. I hope these are not some stupid irrelevant questions that I bother you about.
Anyways, here are some of them:
- What's the use of IPFS in your software & how does it affect end user?
- What are these "nodes" you talk about. Are these IPFS nodes?
- Is running Anytype on my PC means I am running a Anytype node or IPFS etc?
- Logging in on Android for the first time, Anytype indicated "creating wallet". What is this?
- What are your current sources of funding/partners to build Anytype?
Looks great, might be just what I am looking for to manage the plethora of data I have scattered around the internet. Just filled in the early access request form 😉

I'm one of the few people who extensively tested anytype's first alpha version on a mac over the past 8 weeks. I used it to organise my tasks, private files and research activities. Overall I loved the experience and will continue to (heavily) use it.
Pros
- UI / UX is intuitive, exceptionally well designed, a piece of art
- performance and speed are outstanding, super slick and snappy (vs. evernote, notion, airtable, trello)
- self hosting without set up through IPFS, all complexity is abstracted away
- privacy by design - I feel deeply relieved when nobody is watching or stealing my data
- offline first - used it on a train and plane without any down times or restrictions
- potential - content addressable web links will provide devs with completely new tool sets empowering edge AI, verifiable version control / auditability
Cons
- pass phrase for key recovery might be cumbersome for non technical users
- still in alpha - I want to share it with my friends, family and colleagues asap
- small bugs re text formatting given the early stage
I believe anytype will set new standards by combining UX, convenience and privacy in unprecedented ways. Love it.

@heileventures Wow offline support is huge. It's a pain point for me with Notion. I'm a huge proponant of Notion as I think it's a beautiful product. But I'm happy to give Anytype a chance. Signed up.
I don't quite understand how the local storage is working? Is it a peer to peer system? Am I uploading and maintaining a decentralized network while using the app? Lastly, if you're planning to open source it and it's free, what is the long term monetization strategy that will ensure the tool is supported?
@lui_kohl I think users will be running an IPFS node in the background which indeed is a p2p file storage system. Plenty of options re monetisation imo - e.g. OS licenses for commercial use, enterprise subscriptions, data backups, value added services, application marketplace on top of it (think wordpress) etc. Not an expert - the team will have better answers.
I’m a co-founder of Anytype and I’d like to tell you what we are building.
Currently all of us have to use many stand-alone apps to work, create and collaborate. So, our data is scattered among these services. What’s worse it is silo’ed and accessed by service providers. We end up having multiple logins, searches and subscriptions, cannot use data from one app in the other and have to pay with our privacy in each of these services.
That’s why we are building Anytype - an all-in-one tool focused on privacy and data ownership.
From interface stand-point we were inspired by Hypercard, Notion and Airtable. We love the idea behind Hypercard that users can create software without code, the innovation of Notion that an interface to create web pages is as easy as writing a note and the approach of Airtable - allowing to create custom databases for any use case. We decided to combine all of these and put it on a completely new architecture.
In Anytype all applications run locally and exchange data directly in a peer-to-peer way without exposing it to 3rd parties even when users work across devices and with each other. Because of this in anytype you own not only the data itself, but also the interface to work with it. That means if you create something with anytype, it is truly yours. Also, Anytype is free if you use your own disk space. And it works offline like it should.
So far Anytype is in closed alpha and you might wonder why we are announcing it - we have bootstrapped this project for 2 years and now it’s important for us to gather community of early adopters around anytype and of course get early feedback that will influence Anytype’s development.

I am one of the early users of Anytype, I’ve been using it on a daily basis over the last couple of months. It’s an amazing productivity tool with an ultra focus on privacy.
First of all, I loved that Anytype didn't ask my email or any other account to start using it. I use the app for my personal and work-related data without a second thought that anyone can see what I have there.
In the app I track my daily and morning routines, personal and work-related projects, plans, ToDos, and notes; moreover, I store my entire health data, legal documents, etc. The app itself is stable, beautiful, super intuitive... It's easy to navigate and create...
There are bugs, like in all alpha versions, still I love it and wait when more features are added and when I can invite my team.
Pros:
- super cool editor (doing docs, tasks, store files)
- private
- works offline
- free (I store and write a lot)
Cons:
- in alpha - can’t send to people I want
- small bugs

If everything stores on local drives, can I access my files/info from other remote locations?
You are right, by default your files are stored on your computer. Only you have private keys and decide with whom you want to share them.
When you share data with a teammate or friend, he or she stores a copy on their machine increasing data availability.
Also, if you have other devices(desktop or mobile) you can store your files in multiple locations.
You may also opt-in to store a backup on nodes provided by anytype in an encrypted form. Anytype or anyone else not having access to the encryption keys and can't decrypt it. BTW, you always have an option to set up your own anytype node :)

@michael_dubakov I think you are violating the rules of PH with offensive language 🙈 (in Russian). It would be great if you can edit it to continue discussion in a polite mode. To answer this question I can quote Picasso: «Un artista copia, un gran artista roba». If you have more detailed questions about some exact interface solutions or question about the use of some elements - please, share them - I'd be happy to discuss all our design decisions
@pronkin_ The quote is great, but you steal not only visual design, but also mechanics, etc. It's OK to steal and mix ideas, but I'd say in your case it's too much. Instead of finding your own visual language, you just took the one invented by other people. I don't have any questions, I just express my opinion.
@pronkin_ @michael_dubakov It was my first thought as well and I think it's completely fine if they figured that the UI & UX they use serves their needs best. But I'm sure that they also know in doing so, it could influence the opinion of others about the product or company. If they're fine with that, why not?
@pronkin_ @michael_dubakov @jonasschmahl I think what most people don't get is that anytype is built on a completely different web stack which allows for drastically expanded use cases, e.g. time stamping & access control, secure private messaging (keybase), crypto financial use cases (wallet infra) and way more. That the differences are invisible to the user (yet) is just a strong sign for the team's architectural design choices imo. Maybe they'll find some tweaks to the frontend over time :)
@michael_dubakov All interface design is very unified — it consists from text, graphics (icons and emoji), images and spaces in between. Optimal sizes of title, text, images, line length and their position are very similar and often actually the same. There are established gold standards for these parameters.

Oh wow, I love this - just realized I've been waiting for a product like this - being able to work offline or free without limits and that it looks this good! When can I try? Also: how can my team and I collaborate without breaching privacy?
@silja_litvin I'm excited that you like anytype. Currently when you collaborate with your team, all the data goes through a server - where it is exposed to service provider. In Anytype the data goes directly from you to your team mates - in a peer-to-peer way, so anytype has no access to it. It's a completely new architecture and it was not possible before
I know the team building this and they are amazing. Super smart people. I have tried Anytype and I would totally recommend it as a replacement for many productivity apps.

Our workload has been increasing so quickly in the past couple of months and I'm really starting to suffocate with all the bits and pieces of info we need to put together within our team to push our startup forward. Most of the stuff we debate or work on really can't/shouldn't be exposed, so the collaboration-meets-privacy thing is a winner!
