Apple AirPods are gorgeous wireless headphones. Just take them out and they’re ready to use with all your devices. Put them in your ears and they connect instantly. Speak into them and your voice sounds clear.
@mg The price of 512 GB SSD module in 2012 was 800+ $. Price of the Retina MacBook Pro as compared to standard MacBook Pro was little higher (The top end rMBP was 199$ more than the standard with the same spec minus SSD, I own one. But I'm certain it was only 100$ more than the 2011 Unibody MacBook Pro). Now the price of a 512 GB SSD is significantly lower but the price of the rMBP remains the same. This is how Apple should have played with the AirPods as well. Should have included in the iPhone 7 box at the same cost or maybe to cover the manufacturing cost. This would push the demand for Bluetooth headphones bringing the cost down and Apple can be credited for their role in making wireless audio mainstream.
@holly_chisholm SAME. I can barely keep track of my wired earbuds, and now I've got to keep two AND make sure they don't fall out. I really like being able to take out one bud and let it hang while I talk to people, and now I'll just have to *gulp* hold it. First world problems to the max.
@cassidoo@holly_chisholm Be on the lookout for a $30 3rd party rubber slip-on option for these in the near future. So you can have the one-ear out as you chat on the phone. I'm almost certain. But just another thing for you to carry.
@_jacksmith the headphone / earphone market has grown considerably and there are dozens of players with wireless earphones that don't look so idiotic. This is Apple's New Coke moment.
@simon_isaacs@_jacksmith Ok, so you're saying the design is steps behind the competition? Aside from Bragi's and Samsung's bud-only design, both of which are pretty terrible at this point, what's behind?
@simon_isaacs I wouldn't say, that they're looking so bad. And with the box for reload, this style makes sense. Anyway... a matter of taste. But why behind the competition?
@wyssdaniel who has come out excited by the design of these silly things? Would be interested to see one credible piece hailing what these look like on... Just reminds me of Something About Marry
The design looks great, and the wireless experience seems a lot better. At more than $100, the price point competes directly with Bose and others, which no longer qualifies as an instant purchase for me. Overall, the move to wireless is positive and this is yet another bold step for the company to make.
Also: RIP "The Headphone"
@_jacksmith@tarungangwani Steve Jobs would never have approved of this crap...it seems like they are literally just rushing stuff. It doesn't at all feel like the Apple of yesterday where they really took the time to get things right on so many basic levels. The whole thing about Courage was the reason why they removed the headphone jack lol really Courage!
Instant bluetooth, light weight, no cords and a case that recharges means that you'll find yourself using the Airpods far more than normal wired headphones. Great for workouts too. The perfect gift for people who spend a lot of time making calls or listening to podcasts or music.
Pros:
The best Apple product since the iPhone.
Cons:
Won't fit everyone's ears. Siri is still behind so you'll want to disable it as a control mechanism.
@bentossell I'm with @maxwellhallel here - they're still a social faux pas to wear around unless you're a limo driver. All I see with this design is *two* pairs of Bluetooth on the same person. 😭
@bentossell Yes, I still say they look ridiculous. And so do the AirPods. Interestingly, hearing aids don't look ridiculous - presumably because they try to be less visible.
Absolutely stunning. Good bye Dash. Really like the charging case (24h battery life) and the auto connection if you open the case. For 160.- buck not cheap but I will buy them anyways...
@matthui It is indeed stunning to pack 5h of battery, bluetooth, microphones and IR sensors in the same "old" form factor even without visible charging connectors like the competition does. And I have no problem what so ever with the fit of the earbuds but I know a lot of people do...
Wonder what kind of radiation footprint these things put out directly next to your brain. I, personally, I am still very skeptical of wireless wearables. The long-term health effects are not known yet, but the convenience of using them is definitely here.
There are just an amazing piece of technology, they work great, stay and feel pretty good in the ears and they totally helped me forget 3.5mm audio jack... what a courage!
Pros:
Super easy to use, great audio quality and battery, seamless.
Cons:
Design is okay to me but that's not the case for everybody watching me in the street! :D
I think the product is interesting. It's really well-suited for people who are on the go, who hate that their cord gets in the way. The battery life is okay - however I don't know about the battery life comparable products. The price does seem in line with high-end headphones, and I think that the voice activation is nice. Personally, the best value of EarPods is the mic/audio control dongle. The AirPods seem to do a lot more than just that...
I also asked a few real folks to voice their opinion and chime in on the conversation. You can view their video feedback here: https://sprint.dscout.com/s/7hn6...
