Hi Product Hunt! This is Guillaume (https://heliographe.studio) and Alvaro (https://nuevo.tokyo), and we're so excited to finally launch AgBr - a black and white film emulator for iPhone/iPad/Mac.
We're both passionate photographers, and black and white film photography holds the most special place in our hearts. But like most people we also shoot lots of digital images with our phones every day, so we wanted to build something that would bridge the two worlds.
Our approach with this app was to design a tool that could be used just as well by casual photographers who want a straightforward way to give a unique look to their images, as well as pros who want to experiment with something fresh and different.
The last thing we wanted to do was make yet another photo editor where you get lost fidgeting with dozens of sliders, curves, and widgets - instead we set out to come up with an editing flow inspired by the darkroom process, where you learn to trust your eyes and build your intuition. With a few swipes in AgBr you can sweep through film emulations, quickly refine the processing, and export your final image.
While we've been building AgBr since last summer, it's part of a much longer journey of research and development into film emulation - including Alvaro's work on the BLACK app for Windows Phone/iOS (2014), and NOIZE preset series for Lightroom (2023).
This public release is just the first step for us - we'll be adding a new film emulation to the app every month through all of 2025; we've got tons of additional new features on our todo list; but most of all, we're especially excited to hear from people all over the world so we can make AgBr as good as we can.

Excited about the launch of AgBr. The passion for B&W film remains strong in the creative scene. AgBr beautiful interface and high quality emulsion – B&W will capture a new generation of digital photographers.
So damn sexy! The effects are gorgeous, but man the UI - brings back the magic of the early days of photo filters. Replaced Leica LUX on my Home Screen, looking forward to playing around with this more - good luck on the launch!
Congratulations on launching AgBr! It's exciting to see a focused solution for black-and-white photography enthusiasts. How do you plan to enhance user engagement and retention after the initial download of the app?
I absolutely love this. This was an immediate download and purchase for me. I've always loved black & white photography and films. It gives the works an atmosphere you just can't create with color. The emulation of the film grain here is on another level from anything else I've seen in editing apps. And the fine-grain tweaks you can make are helpful without getting in the way or making it feel bloated. I love apps like this, that focus on one thing and do it extremely well.
One small bit of feedback: I'd really like a way to tap on the photo (I'm on iOS) and have the UI disappear or at least "fade back" in some way to get a sense of how the image looks without the filter UI options present along the bottom. Other than that, all the other features are super streamlined and easy to use. I especially love the pull down to save/export option, super slick.
I can't wait to play around with this more, and I'm looking forward to more filters throughout the year. Incredible work @heliographe and @nuevotokyo!

I’ve been waiting for this for awhile and it did not disappoint. The grain is fantastic and it’s very easy to adjust the strength of the emulation. Instant purchase. Congrats guys!
