Would you let a robot in your home or not? đ€
ICYMI: 1x launched the NEO Gamma, a new generation of humanoid robots that are designed to help out with things at the home like doing the laundry, cleaning, putting up photos, etc. This is the kind of stuff I used to dream about as a kid but now as an adult I'm not sure if I want a robot walking around my house. Would you let one in and what do you think about home robots? Think they have a future or is it going to be a hype train before fizzling out?

Cannot imagine that I would wake up in the middle of the night and that thing would stare at me.

@busmark_w_nika I'm confident it will be possible to build completely safe and reliable robots. Should be open-source software and hardware and controlled by symbolic AI. Could be much more reliable than humans (don't remember the human psychos from the movies?)

It's interesting to draw an analogy to self-driving cars. At first, there was a lot of discomfort with self-driving cars, but in San Francisco at least, they've become normal and preferred. What I take away from that is that we can get used to technology a lot more quickly than we expect.
Then again, I'm not sure having a humanoid robot in the home is the preferred state. If a humanoid robot is the only way to take on an interesting work and leave us free to connect, pursue our dreams, and just hang out, then maybe that's the future. On the other hand, if there are other solutions like appliances that are semi-autonomous...I think people will generally gravitate towards technology that melts away into the background.

@rajiv_ayyangar I feel this has potential in senior assistance more than anywhere else or anyone that needs physical assistance in the homes. I used to be afraid of self driving cars but loved the Waymo I took that last SF trip!

@aaronoleary Oh yeah, huge potential with senior assistance! That brings to mind a more general point that when a new market emerges or a new use case emerges, we tend to vastly underestimate how applicable that use case is. For example, the market for Airbnb is way bigger than the market for hotels because you can use them in many different situations. The market for Lyft and Uber is way bigger than the market was for taxis because they're so much better in cost, time, and experience.
If we take it as an axiom that history tends to rhyme, if not repeat, then we might guess that once humanoid robots start to become commonplace, we'll find them in many more instances and places than we expect.

@rajiv_ayyangar I also think that in some decades, it will feel completely normal to have a humanoid at home (autonomous / semi-autonomous appliances additionally of course).

The NEO Gamma's abilities are impressive â laundry, cleaning, all that jazz â but Iâm not sure Iâd let a robot roam my house. The privacy thing creeps me out, and it's face need to be more human, it looks creepy currently LOL.
I think theyâve got a future if theyâre safe and cheap, but Iâd only try one short-term for now. How about you?

NEO Gamma @rohanrecommends I don't see them being cheap for a long while. Yeah same the privacy stuff creeps me out but I feel I could be swayed but at the same time I like doing chores so not sure what I would use it for. I think it could be great for senior assistance though

It's really good IMO. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1990314/ 7.0/10 on imdb. I feel the 1x "product tonality" is from that movie. And it highlights a lot of the early problems we will soon have with our new autonomous friends. đž

I already have a robot vacuum that saves me a ton of time. The cleaning quality isnât perfect, of course, but itâs still better than nothing. So Iâd gladly get other home robots as wellâthe main factors for me are functionality, output quality, and price.

Not currently. But I'm confident we'll have really nice and reliable humanoids in a few decades the latest (unless an apocalyptic event occurs of course). Optimally, my robot friend would be open-source software and hardware and controlled by symbolic AI.
Robots are definitely going to make life way more convenient, and I know it wonât be long before theyâre everywhere. But Iâm not sureâwould people find it easier to accept robots that look like real humans, or ones that have a cute, more robotic look? đ€Ł
never ever, i hate robots
Iâm super excited about the future of humanoid robots! I think theyâd be amazing for helping out with chores, taking care of the elderly, and just being great companions. And hey, itâd be cool if they looked more friendly and nice. I donât want to be scared if I see one in the dark, haha!
I donât think people will be comfortable bringing them home permanently, at least for now. We want to get acquainted with them outdoorsâat gas stations, restaurants, parks, in traffic, etc. Over time, we may build trust in these.
