What does social media in the future look like?

Everyday, we are undoubtedly evolving as tech-enthusiasts and I believe social media is going to be a huge disruption in our lives. Do you think technologies like AI, VR, Metaverse would greatly influence the upcoming dimensions of social media. Would love to hear your perspective on what social media holds in the future?

I think with image and text generating AI, as well as data collection and prediction algorithms, social media will probably be more personalized to your preferences. I think this will have the tendency to create echo chambers, since people will rarely see things outside of their own little bubble. I also think social media will "follow" you to other sites as well, since the data they collected from you could be used to build a marketing profile, which they'll sell to other companies as valuable advertising data. Like others have said, there will probably be more options to buy things directly from the site, which fits in nicely with marketing data being collected from customers and users.

1. Storytelling will soon replace social media updates 2. IGTV will become a popular TV channel 3. Podcasts will attract more audiences 4. Tiktok will take the throne in the social network war

In the future, we will see an explosion of new platforms on social media. It is already changing how we interact with our friends, family, and co-workers—and they're only going to become more sophisticated as time goes on. Even if you're not a fan of living in a virtual world, I can't imagine that most people don't want their social media interactions to be more personalized and efficient.

Pretty interesting - with channels turning into handles, profiles turning into avatar and more. Your customers / followers will own a unique identity on the internet. While the fundamentals by which we target them may more or less be the same - the approach may change significantly. Example: Today, if you are able to make the graphic / content visually engaging (from a 2D standpoint), you can have a great CTR. Imagine a metaverse setting where this content / graphic is also judged on the sense of experience a user has looking at it and hence a completely new dimension that will judge how your CTR will look. Some companies are doing real cool innovations in this space, but it'll take time till a SOP is established!

I agree. With huge amounts of data being collected every day, it's what we agree to give on social media. Technology is absorbing every inch of it and training itself to become a giant. It is somewhat of a dilemma for users who still keep a primitive mindset, whether to accept the evolving world or stay where they are. But of course, we can't just escape from what's coming next in front of us.

@rupal_sharma3 Agreed. I also think more data will be collected as well. It seems pretty far off for now, but with neuralink on the horizon, advertisers may have access to users' brainwaves in the future to make more targeted advertising decisions.

I think Metaverse and VR have started their journey a little bit early... Unfortunately, these significant-tech developments haven't been adapted to our daily social media experience. However, I believe that AI tech has been the easiest tech development to adopt in today's digital age, amongst others. From creating content to analyzing comments' sentiments, AI has successfully earned its spot in our daily social media activities and analysis. For example, Socialays is launching its AI-powered free social media cyberbullying prevention app on the Product Hunt next week. If you're also interested in new AI-supported social media management apps I'd recommend you to check out Socialays' social media management & analysis features: socialays.com Btw, feel free to support Socialays' free app on PH by subscribing its upcoming page: https://www.producthunt.com/upco... I believe tech like AI and VR will have an improved reach among the core SM users. However, I don't see a drastic change in SM in the near future. More trends and more influencers for sure.

Too early to say. I mean metaverse and AI are all still in very nascent stages like internet in 2000's. Long way to go and evolve. But regardless, mental wellness needs to be in the forefront of whatever we build in the future. Enough damage has already been done by social media reducing attention span and keeping people hooked for hours mindlessly on short form videos. I hope it doesn't get worse.

Social media would become more and more of a marketplace. But eventually, the world will demand for a market free, advertisement free, sales free space.

Launching soon!
I believe that the future of social media will be greatly influenced by technologies like AI, VR, and the Metaverse. These technologies will enable users to have more immersive and interactive experiences on social media platforms, and will allow for the creation of new and innovative forms of content and communication. For example, AI algorithms could be used to personalize and curate user feeds and recommend content based on individual interests and preferences, while VR and the Metaverse could enable users to create and explore virtual worlds and engage with others in real-time. Overall, I believe that the future of social media will be more dynamic, engaging, and immersive, and will continue to transform the way we connect and communicate with others.

I don't know what the future of social media is, but I hope it becomes something that is good for the mental health of its customers not bad.

I think AI, VR, and Metaverse can provide much immersive experience. People could actually meet in the virtual world. Also, the VR content on social media would engage many people and provide heightened sense of actually being present in the virtual world. I found an interesting article that elaborates on this topic: https://www.forbes.com/sites/ber...

@bipinjg omg I can't imagine a twitter or facebook argument in the metaverse. Debates and politics could get interesting for sure.

Social media will differ depending on which lines the web3 is developed, which comes before the Metaverse. If today's start-up chooses the creator economy, security, and freedom model, we will have social platforms with full integrations; imagine an Instagram art account, which is also an NFT store. Likewise, when you see a TikTok video and like clothes, in the web3, I can imagine AI identifies the clothes, and with one click of a button, you can order them for yourself. Check the movie HER if you want to see how he web3 looks when implemented. When the Metaverse becomes mainstream, personalized avatars become a thing. Ready Player One describes the virtual world in which we have dived for a whole body experience.

Of course, we can already communicate in a number of ways via social media. Text, voice call, video call, there's no shortage of ways to keep in touch with friends and family. But imagine you could feel like you were right there, in the room with them? VR technology could make this a reality.

Very good topic! I believe content will be more scattered and niche, thus social media will have a loose structure but still connect with one topic and another. Also there would be more social media platforms for various niche and interests.

I have an alternate view. People will be more open to meeting new people face-to-face and less on social media. With all the gathered data and surveillance - each person will have a rating - there will be fewer violent crimes, so safe to meet in-person - people will be able to obtain the compatibility score before meeting the person In my opinion, any social media that can figure out a method to group compatible individuals together will survive. Here AI will play a big role. I can see a big role of VR and metaverse in education, but not much in SM.

@rach_ana This is an interesting take on the future of social media

@rach_ana Hi Rach, it's interesting you say this because getting people to meet face-to-face is something thisapp (the company I work for) is building towards. We just launched on Product Hunt, we would love to get some feedback. https://www.producthunt.com/post...
A few people connecting heart-to-heart, most connecting for life n business convinience and possibilities. Both directions will evolve in terms of efficiency and experience though:)

- on web3 - More VR play, especially shopping, travel, meetups - Level playing field(What Elon is doing for Twitter) - Synced up with Payment and Credit Scores to authenticate users and bifurcate them

This is such an interesting topic, @janvikaurpanesar. With the Web3 in place, the space in which social media is currently operating would be completely changed, and it would not be confined to just "Like," "Share," and "Subscribe." The perfect example of a web-based social media service is xone.gg, which is built on blockchain and NFTs allowing users to create and share virtual worlds using AR. In terms of the Metaverse, social media platforms in the future will strive to provide immersive, interactive experiences that stimulate as many senses as possible, rather than simply connecting us to our friends.
