What will be the role of humans in society when AI and human-like robots take over more jobs?

In yesterday's discussion by @aaronoleary, there were a few thoughts about using robots at home.

In this context, several questions occurred to me.

For example, what will happen to the future of humans if we delegate most of the manual and mental work to machines? How will we handle our free time? How will people be rewarded?

In most cases, when people are bored, they start doing stupid things (or harmful activities) to relieve their boredom, while a few individuals try to find a way to occupy their minds with something useful.

Do you have any idea what that future would look like?

Play basketball 🏀. Make and eat pasta 🍝. Smell the flowers 🌺. I think we will be fine 🥰

How will people be rewarded?

I think history shows it will be a mixed bag. We've experienced exponential productivity growth since the industrial revolution, but are busier than ever. I'd love to think it will free up time for hikes and museum visits and learning new skills, and to some extent is probably will unlock that potential. But so oftent new luxuries quickly become commoditized, and it seems we have a knack for backfilling the mundane with what will soon become mundane. And, while I won't venture into the politics of wealth distribution further deteriorating, I will just say I think there will be trade-offs that account for the rewards we tally. I'm just hoping future generations don't look back at Wall-E as prescient documentary! ;)

@dan_difr Have in mind that many people do not have such decent hobbies. I saw many people who started to binge drink, or simply engage in an activity that was more harmful than beneficial. In society it is always like that. 20% of pro-active people who want to change the world to the better and 80% that will be bored and do not know what with their lives.

I remember reading somewhere about contingent salaries but need to have a closer look to this topic because the guy also described other things related to it. I just hope we will remain "good".

@busmark_w_nika totally agree! That's what I was getting at in my joke about Wall-E. Most of society becomes so overwhelmed with the "freedom" afforded by technology that they become enslaved to consumption and wind up conceding the entirety of their power and autonomy to corporations.

It estimated that 66% of jobs in Advanced Economies (AEs) are exposed to some degree of AI automation (source)

So don't worry, we are all in the same boat...

I’m an optimist, so I believe that when humans no longer have to do things they don’t want to (because robots and AI handle them), we’ll shift our focus toward creative projects, passion-driven work, and entirely new fields that we haven’t even imagined yet.

There are still nearly infinite possibilities for human exploration, whether in science, art, philosophy, or even space. Imagine what we could achieve with advanced AI and robotics accelerating our progress. The limits of what’s possible could expand dramatically.

Of course, there’s also the potential for misuse, and I get the concern about people falling into existential crises. But I don’t think that will be our biggest problem. If anything, history has shown that humans adapt, innovate, and find meaning in new ways as society evolves. The challenge will be shaping AI and automation in a way that empowers us rather than replacing us.

@hussein_r One additional point: It would be really useful if AI could focus on solving issues like cancer etc. Because this is something that would be really useful – to solve global problems.

Launching soon!

I feel like we’ll focus on tasks that robots can’t easily replace. More people will find joy in sports like baseball, volleyball, and basketball, leading to larger audiences at events.⚽⚾🥎 Plus, we might get to spend more time with loved ones on picnics and holidays 🌺🌻—I really hope so! However, as technology continues to evolve, I also hope that no one gets excluded from its benefits.

@kay_arkain Maybe new job positions will emerge. Who knows. It has always been like that but in this case everything is done for us.

In my opinion the AI tools are not really the issue here, they are amazing but they still lack a lot of human input for specific refinements and case to case based situations, having worked in sales and personal finance, I can confidently tell there are things that AI just won't be able to know no matter how much you train them on it. And that's okay, in my opinion we should cooperate together in using AI to help us achieve more efficient results and using much less time and resources.

However, the big issue I think is with the big corporations, how will they use it? Because even with outsourcing from my experience I noticed they care more about cutting costs rather than making sure everything works fine. Not to mention any names, but there are companies that are already utilizing AI into their system and a lot of customers find the experience frustrating, because even though AI can answer some of the basic and even advanced questions, it cannot solve the situations that requite human connection to better relate to and understand the situation, but do they really care? They cut costs, people will still use their services because some of them just don't have much of an alternative.

On the other hand, AI tools can help smaller companies delegate tasks and scale at a much more rapid pace, hence forcing their way into the competition where previously it required them too many resources.

So at the end of the day, it's not really about AI replacing us, but rather how quickly each of us can adapt and utilize it to the max. Which is why I think we're still kind of far from that point where we'd be getting bored from doing nothing, unless you are someone who refuses to adapt and just get left behind then yeah it's going to be tough in that kind of society.

P.S. Not trying to be negative or anything, just having a real outlook on things based on my personal experience, it's better to acknowledge the issue and work towards solving it rather than complain and do nothing, or pretend it won't reach you.
