In my opinion, some face-to-face is necessary. Research shows that only around ~6-7% of the message someone receives is the content of what was actually said, the rest is nonverbal cues. With that, lots can get lost when you are limited to voice or video calls, and it can become very difficult to maintain that feeling of workplace camaraderie without a physical presence. So for me, I believe face-to-face is crucial to have from time-to-time.
