Hi everyone, How important is it for a product manager to understand marketing? Should a PM aim to become a marketing expert or just be well-versed enough to collaborate effectively with marketing teams? Looking forward to your insights!

While PMs don't necessarily need to become marketing experts, they should have a solid grasp of marketing principles and strategies. This knowledge allows PMs to collaborate effectively with marketing teams, align product development with market needs, and communicate product value to customers. A strong understanding of marketing also helps PMs make informed decisions regarding product positioning, pricing, and promotional activities, ultimately contributing to the product's market acceptance and profitability. Thus, while deep expertise in marketing isn't mandatory, working knowledge is invaluable for PMs aiming to maximize their product's impact in the marketplace.

I think experienced product managers know a thing or two about marketing. They don't need to become marketing experts, but getting insights from one every now and then never hurts.

A PM should definitely know enough about marketing to make informed decisions.

Understanding marketing as a product manager is like adding extra RAM to your product development brain - it's not essential, but boy does it make everything run smoother! 😉

I think for a Product Manager it's a must to have marketing knowledge because it enables them to effectively understand the market, position the product, communicate its value, develop successful go-to-market strategies.
