How do you assess the potential impact of a new feature?

Before shipping it, and ideally before even prioritizing it. What are some of the techniques you used to assess the benefits of a new feature? Were you able to predict/model accurately the impact of the feature once it was released?

Start by understanding your user's needs, pain points. Is the new feature addressing these? Look at your data, what does it suggest? Conduct user interviews, surveys, get feedback.
