Do you actually read job descriptions before applying?
If you've been actively job hunting in the past 6 months, I'm curious what your process was.
Do you really read job descriptions before you apply? Do you feel like they give you a good sense of the company and role? Any other key frustrations in the process?
(For context, I'm beta-testing a platform that helps startups create video-based job descriptions—think 30 second IG stories—that help...

Founders, what's your opinion of hiring freelancers?
Are there certain roles you would hire freelance / contractors for, and others you would not? Why?
(And if you're a freelancer, what's the #1 most misunderstood thing about working as a freelancer?)

Being an entrepreneur is rewarding, but there are very real tradeoffs, and it's not for everyone.
I think spending a few months as a freelancer is a low-risk way of seeing how you feel about being a founder. Freelancers are solopreneurs in every sense of the word. You need to do sales, marketing, operations, taxes, accounting, finance...plus the actual freelance work you're getting paid to...

I'm supportive of a 4-day work week for those that want it, and feel that it maximizes their productivity.
I think freelance workers have been experimenting with things like this for a long time. You see many freelancers who prefer to batch their work into just 3 or 4 days. Others prefer spreading it across 6 days, or even 7.
We're all different, and what works for one person won't...
Would you like to have a 4-day workweek? And how would you compensate the extra day off?

Be honest with yourself about whether you can envision spending the next 7+ years of your life working on your startup.
As you grow, the nature of the challenges you face will change, but it doesn't become less 'difficult'.
If you can't enjoy the process (or at least find it rewarding), you won't find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.
What advice would you give someone who is starting their own company?

I really liked your blog, particularly the structured approach that still allows for learning and exploration.
My advice: have 10x more conversations with people than you think you should. Talk to people in areas you are curios about but unfamiliar with, and want to explore. Do cold outreach to people for advice. Approach those conversations with curiosity. When you talk to new people, share...

What are the core values of a thriving and caring community?
Hey, I’m Gavin and I’m building thirdwork, a talent platform that matches web3 and crypto startups with expert product, design and marketing talent.
It seems like 'community' often means a 10k person Discord or some in-person happy hours. Is that real community?

Radical ownership.
For the first few team members, everyone must be a true owner, willing and able (more than that, hungry) to take projects from end-to-end.
It's great to be a big thinker, but in startups everyone needs to be able to DO things too!

When I started Thirdwork (a freelance talent marketplace), two things helped:
1.) I've worked as a freelancer before, but also hired dozens of freelance writers, designers, developers, brand strategists, and marketers over the course of my career. That at least gave me some intuition around the pain points I should understand.
2.) We scheduled over 50 structured product feedback sessions...
