I'm part of many communities and see this struggle all over. It's very easy to have a large community in numbers, but very difficult to make that community act as one, be engaged, be there on a daily basis, and feel the vibe and the effervescence of a real committed group.
I also believe that those who'll nail the right formula are set up for success no matter what they want to accomplish....

Making sure they understand and use our product while getting results. So many times they don't even know how to benefit from the product. Noticing their activities, and what they do, and matching them with their business needs, or personal needs if it's a consumer product goes a long way.
