SEO! But try to find channels where your users are active.
Our product Graphite is a developer tool - so we go to conferences, write blog posts to Hacker News, etc.

It's harder to iterate in public - the signal to noise ratio is also lower. Our product Graphite spent almost 2 years in closed beta.
