Hey everyone! It's been a bit since I've rolled out a project on my own. I ventured into this side project to inject some momentum back into different corners of my life: shedding some extra weight, reconnecting with old friends, and reigniting my passion for crafting new software for myself. A massive shoutout to Ali Abdaal's "Feel Good Productivity" for sparking the idea of daily "side quests." In my definition, side quests are those little tasks that don't really matter much. Missing out on them won't cause any drama. They're not part of my essential to-do lists or work backlogs. They're small, stress-free activities that take a bit of time and feel somewhat liberating. They're not ambitious goals. Their only measure of success is whether they're done or not. Think "spend 5 minutes hunting on Yelp for a healthier dining spot," not “run a marathon.” Or, "shoot Adam a text about grabbing lunch" instead of "lock in lunch plans with Adam." If he replies, awesome; if not, no big deal. My side quest is complete. Initially, I was simply jotting down my side quests in a notes app, which did the trick. However, I thought, why not level up by developing an app to track my side quest streaks and celebrate these moments? My daughter and I ended up calling it Tres Cosas, in honor of our laughably long Duolingo Spanish streak—three things, simple as that. This marks my debut solo iOS app, and do I have questions for you! :) I’m eager to hear your feedback on potential improvements or your next steps if you were in my shoes. How have you approached similar projects, and what were your learnings? And, importantly, does Tres Cosas strike you as an app you'd want to integrate into your daily routine? Your insights would be incredibly valued.

@busmark_w_nika exactly. I was just using a note in Notes.app and I did an ok job sticking to my side quests. But I also found it easy to slack off. I was also inspired by the Duolingo streak my 9 year old daughter and I have of over 1200 days! If Duolingo can keep me so motivated maybe I can do even better in these small quests of mine. Been working on the app on some weekends and early mornings just over the last month or so. Came together pretty quickly since I’ve been thinking on it for months. What’s next: not entirely sure. A social aspect seems like a top priority. Sharing what you’re doing with other people and encouraging your friends to keep going with their own quests. I could also see some kind of “help me AI come up with some side quest ideas” but I don’t have a clear picture in my head yet of what that looks like.

@natekontny love to see it! What stack did you end up using? Or did you stick to native iOS/swift for your first go?

@sean_lynch thanks man! Just react native. Hilariously this is my first iOS app that got published. I did a react native camera app like 5 years ago that never got approved so had a little react native experience in the toolbox.

Huge congrats on launching Tres Cosas, Nathan! I love how you've made daily tasks feel like fun side quests. Tracking streaks is such a cool feature - it's motivating and makes every small win count. How about adding an option to share those wins on social media? It could be a fun way to connect and spread some positivity. Keep up the awesome work!

@shoppietra thanks! Great idea. The whole social aspect of sharing what you’re doing with these is at the top of my list to start figuring out.

Congrats on the launch! The small things are very easy to forget about. It took me quite a while to realize you need to consciously invest your time in connecting with friends and family just like you do it with hobbies or work. That will be the category I focus on first, giving it a try!

I've been using Tres Cosas for a week now, and have really been enjoying it. In particular, I like it because it 1) helps me focus on today and tomorrow, not the far future or past; 2) is keeping me well-rounded, not thinking of productivity as a work-only thing; and 3) is designed with such simplicity that I'm not carrying around the plaque of todos/reminders that build up over time. I highly recommend checking it out.
