My friends @46elks and I have been working on this side project called Signup! for the past few weeks.
A lot of us have side projects and we love seeing new users signing up to them!
So we built this service. Just create your free account, put the little javascript snippet at the bottom of the last page of the on boarding of your app and we'll send you a text message to cheer you up!
@johannesl can you tell the fellow hunters how it works behind the scene?
@gregoiregilbert@46elks Hi Grégoire! Thanks for hunting us.
Basically, when you create a Signup!-account you get a unique code. You then get a Javascript code with that unique code baked in, and you copy paste that snippet to the last page of your product or projects account creation flow.
When your users complete your registration process, the Javascript will run and our backend will use the 46elks API for sending fun motivating text messages (SMS) to your phone number. :-)
Cool - when I saw this I thought of the Startup Podcast season 3 about Grooveshark (listen here) where they said they had an alert with balloons for every time someone signed up and when they started doing so well they had to turn it off as it was just too much haha
The goal for co's using this should be to get inundated with SMS messages all day, right? haha
Are you going to look at doing more batch messages? e.g. get a text every time 10 people signed up, 100 etc etc. ? Could be cool :)
@bentossell Thanks a lot mate!
You have a very good point.
We built it mainly for side projects, that usually don't get too many sign ups right away. BUT @johannesl is already working on the next release that will include batch messages 😊
@bentossell Hey Ben! Thanks for the question. I really like your suggestion of 10, 100 and counting.
Current version doesn't have it but in the next update we will have messages like "Good start of the week with a new signup! Way to go!" and "🎺🎷🎤🎧🎹🎼 Sweet is the music of many new Signups!".. :-)
@johannesl@gregoiregilbert depends what kind of side-project ;) haha
yeah I think it would make sense when a project gets traction - could also intro tiered pricing then too.
Love this tool ! :)
I tried with an unbounce landing page, it took me less than 2 minutes to implement and test.
"Signup" asked me a question: "someone just signed up! Curious to see who it is ?" but I can't answer from my phone. Is there a way to get more info about the sign up or this minimalist approach is part of the product philosophy.
Also I would love to have the same feature in Slack. What tool would you recommend for that ?
@raphc Thanks for the kind words Raphaël!
For now, it's a very minimalist approach. You got it right!
But funny enough, several people told me that they'd like to be able to reply to the messages, so that might be something we investigate in a future release. (cc: @johannesl)
As for a Slack plugin recommendation I'm afraid I can't help as we don't use any for that.
@raphc Hi there! Really happy to read your positive comment! :-)
We are actually discussing different ways to improve the service going forward. One is being more clever batching the messages, such as "Good start of the week with a new signup! Way to go!" and "Second Signup! today. Well done! 👍🏻".. but it could also make sense to be able to reply with questions or even "chill" to tell the system you want lower volume of messages.
In order to receive replies we would need to send from a phone number instead of the text sender ID "Signup" that we use today. But the good thing with that is if you're using Signup! with multiple projects we can use one number for each project and allow you to add them into your phone book with your own descriptive name + custom ring tone.
Adding Slack integration as an option is actually not that bad an idea. We'll sit down next week with all the feedback we've got and look at what we should do next. Thanks again for the feedback!
@raphc Oh, and I forgot - yeah, one way to further improve the service is to show more information about the signups you get. We really like the minimalistic approach to get started, but then adding more options once you've tested the service would be nice - and even doing simple things such as "You got a new signup from Sweden" makes a lot of sense. :-)
Would you pay for a service like this and what's a good pricing model you think?
@johannesl I could pay a little fee yearly probably (like 10 or 20€)
Thanks for your answers.
I actually had a problem with the implementation of the code. I use only one page and found myself getting a text to every new visit on my unbounce landing page and not for every sign up.
Is it possible to tweak the script so we receive a text only when people fill out the form ?
@raphc Hi again Raphaël!
The trick is to put the Javascript snippet not on your signup page - but instead on the page that your users get to see once they have completed the registration (maybe your confirmation page, dashboard, or Thank you!-page). We'll try to make the instructions more clear!
