It'll be interesting to see what types of apps and integrations get built on top of these types of services. I think the most compelling use case isn't actually to build a straight up email client but to integrate email into other types of apps.
That being said, I can't think of any particularly interesting ideas off the top of my head right now :)
@nbashaw we are using email as the only front facing part of the "application" over at @xdotai and Amy exist only in the meeting scheduling dialogue. We are building the mail API's ourselves though, but perhaps there is an alternative ..
Michael from Inbox here. We've spent a lot of time working to get the API semantics right, to be both backwards compatible and support modern development. One big benefit of using Inbox vs. Gmail's API is that Inbox also works with Yahoo! Mail, Outlook/Hotmail, Microsoft Exchange, and may more coming soon. Plus it's open source, so you can run it yourself. :)
Anyone here should feel free to ping me with questions. I'd love to hear feedback about the docs, and can set you up with an invite to the hosted version (think Heroku) which is coming soon. mg@inboxapp.com
