Lomi is the world's first home composter that's able to break down bioplastics. Using heat, abrasion, and oxygen it is able to complete the composting process in as little as 4 hours - odor free and mess free.
I bought it as a part of kickstarter and waited almost 2 years for deliver. When I got it, the excitement had waned but I unboxed it. And it's easy enough to setup and use. There are 3 versions, but only 1 makes usable garden compost; the others go into the compost bin (then what's the point of Lomi?).
Anyways, if you cook a lot this composter gets full very quickly - and it makes a lot of noise - sounds like someone with GI issues. The company says it only happens in the beginning, but literally we hear it throughout the entire cycle.
I thought maybe it was because we over stuffed it... but even when I loosely fill the Lomi, the sound continues.
Additionally, it gets jammed up even when loosely packed with artichoke leaves - I mean it REALLY got jammed up, the grinders were completely stuck with artichoke fibers.
I dunno, it's a lot of money for a composter - we have a worm composter in the backyard, and its slower, but it cost us almost nothing.
Congrats on your launch ! It's a great concept. Can I ask you how much electricity does Lomi consumes per cycle? 4 hours is a long cycle so I was wondering if you managed to lower the need for electricity.
@cica_laure_mbappe It's between 0.6 - 0.9 kW/h. If you use Lomi twice per week for a year, it will consume about 20% the energy of an EnergyStar certified refrigerator.
I'm excited to introduce Lomi, the world's first home composter that can break down bioplastics.
You may know Pela as the maker of the world's first compostable phone case. We began developing Lomi as a solution to our own problem - customers want to compost their Pela case after they buy a new phone, but their local composts don't accept bioplastics.
In the 3 years that we've been developing Lomi, we've come to realize that Lomi is so much more than just a solution for Pela case users. The world has a huge problem with food waste.
Food waste makes up about 50% of the volume of waste that North Americans send to landfills each year. Landfills are a terrible place for food waste to break down. In a landfill environment, food scraps begin to release methane - a greenhouse gas exponentially more harmful than carbon dioxide.
Lomi is able to turn food scraps, compostable packaging, and bioplastics into nutrient-rich compost in as little as 4 hours. It's a complete game-changer for condo-dwellers, gardeners, or anyone else with an environmental conscience.
Lomi makes your trash or green bin way less gross to deal with and is compact enough to fit on a kitchen countertop.
Lomi was able to raise over 2 million dollars on the first day of its crowdfunding campaign. It will begin delivery in December of this year.
If you have any questions about Lomi, we're happy to answer them here. Or stop by our Indiegogo page to go way more in-depth.

I feel like Lomi, and home composters, should be normalized like most people have toasters. Can see Lomi working with home designers and real estate companies to offer packages where Lomi comes with the home/office.
Cool product! @aaronoleary, more food for your plants.
